The midfielder was believed to have been contacted before the tournament by national boss Fabio Capello who wanted to use the player’s experience for the major competition.

However Scholes declined the chance to play for England with his priorities set on spending time with his family before the start of yet another season with United.

The 35-year-old had to watch as the Three Lions scraped through the group stages of the tournament before being knocked out by old rivals Germany in the first knockout round.

Scholes has since revealed that it was Capello’s assistant Franco Baldini who spoke to him in an attempt to bring the player out of international retirement.

He said: “I said no, but not straight away.

“If I’d have had a couple of weeks to make a decision I would definitely have gone.

“And watching the World Cup  I wish I had gone. Following England’s display, people said I must be thankful that I wasn’t involved.”

“I can honestly say that isn’t the case,” he added.

England could have used a player like Scholes as they lacked a cutting edge in South Africa, only scoring three goals in the tournament.

However the United veteran will be fresh and ready for the new Premier League season.

The Red Devils will begin their top flight campaign when they take on Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Monday (Man Utd 2/9, draw 5/1, Newcastle Utd 12/1).

United will be looking to win back the Premier League title from rivals Chelsea who won 6-0 against West Brom on the opening day of the season but Scholes is not worried about the Blues favourite tag.

He said: “That doesn’t worry me.

“The three seasons in a row we won the league I don’t think many people fancied us.

“The more people who don’t think we are going to win it the better.”

This could be the midfielder’s last season with the club who have already won the FA Community Shield after beating Chelsea 3-1.

Scholes along with the likes of Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville could all be coming to the end of their time at Old Trafford in a playing capacity with positions in coaching roles a possibility.

Having halted United’s run of consecutive league wins last term, the Blues will start next season as the outright favourites to win the title, with totesport pricing them at 13/8.

While United pushed Chelsea all the way last season, taking the race to the last day, it was the west London side who ultimately controlled the destiny of the silverware for much of the campaign.

While last year eventually developed into a two horse race once again, this season promises to be a lot closer with the likes of Arsenal (4/6 top four finish), Manchester City (1/2), Tottenham (3/1) and Liverpool (7/4) all hopeful of being involved in the title picture.

Despite City having spent nearly £80million on new players already, with more set to arrive before the transfer window shuts, Scholes still believes it will be reigning champions Chelsea who will give United the biggest test.

“Who will our biggest rivals for the title be? You have got to say Chelsea. And the rest… you just do not know,” said Scholes, as he gets ready for Thursday’s pre-season friendly against MLS All-Stars.

“City? We will have to see what happens there. They have bought so many players. Whether they can gel together remains to be seen.”

Despite having lost their crown last season, United have so far failed to spend anywhere near the amount their city rivals have in the hope of claiming their 19th league title. Forward Javier Hernandez and defender Chris Smalling have been the only new arrivals at Old Trafford thus far.

Much like United, Chelsea have also failed to break the bank in a bid to strengthen their position as kings of England, with Yossi Benayoun their only big name arrival thus far.

While there is just over a month of the transfer window left, it seems unlikely either Chelsea or United will make more than one, if any, big money signings, instead relying on the stars of last season.

Scholes is confident that the crop of players, who pushed Chelsea so close last season, will be able to go one place further and get back to the top of the table.

“We have to be confident. Last year we didn’t win what we wanted to win, but, looking back, we definitely were not that far off,” added the former England international.

“You do not want to use excuses, but the injuries we had were shocking really. Hopefully most of us can stay fit this year and hopefully we can go one step further than last season.”

Before United begin the new season against Newcastle on August 16 they will contest the annual curtain raiser, the Community Shield, against Chelsea on August 8.

It was a remarkable statement given that Zidane was a giant among his peers and rightly regarded as the best player in world football at his peak.

“Scholes is undoubtedly the best midfielder of his generation,” added the former Juventus and Real Madrid icon.

The Scholes appreciation club gained a new member this week when World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst suggested the 35-year-old Manchester United star should end his international exile with England.

The Old Trafford favourite won 66 caps – the last was in the European Championship quarter-final defeat by Portugal – and scored 14 goals for his country before retiring in 2004, largely down to the fact that Sven Goran Eriksson played him in a wide-left position.

Steve McClaren made four unsuccessful attempts to try and persuade Scholes to return to the international stage and the consensus now is that his time has gone.

However, Hurst, England’s 1966 hat-trick hero, believes current manager Fabio Capello should make one last attempt to convince one-club man Scholes he could do a job at the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

Hurst said: “If Paul Scholes changed his mind and came out of international retirement I would pick him, definitely, for the World Cup.”

Scholes, a winner of nine Premier League titles, scored a crucial winner in the recent derby against Manchester City to keep Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in the chase for a record 19th domestic crown (6/4 Man United – Premier League outright).

Hurst said on current form Scholes is still as good as any other England midfielder and deserves his place at the World Cup this summer.

Speaking at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, he added: “There is a position for him in the England squad this summer if he changes his mind. Six months ago I was not so sure but now I would say ‘put him in’.”
