Wigan v West Ham (4pm)
You don’t have to be a genius to work out where the most bitten fingernails will be on Sunday. The DW Stadium plays host to bottom club West Ham and one-from-bottom Wigan in a six-pointer.

Defeat for West Ham will send them down and even a win might not be enough to keep them up if results go against them. The Latics need three points to keep alive their hopes of survival and anything other than a win could end their hopes of beating the drop. While the Latics form has picked up recently they have still only managed one win in the last six matches. How West Ham long for a win – their last victory came back at the start of March.

The Hammers will have looked at Saturday’s results and realise the fat lady is warming up when it comes to their hopes of beating the drop. The Latics should have enough to take advantage but you get the sense that both of these teams are doomed.

Match bet – Wigan to win @ 21/20

Birmingham v Fulham (4pm)
Blues wouldn’t have been too impressed with results on Saturday as Wolves and Blackpool won, while Blackburn picked up a point against champions Manchester United.

That leaves Birmingham outside the relegation zone, but only on goal difference. A heavy defeat to Fulham at St Andrew’s while see them swap places with Blackpool and start the last week of the season in the drop zone.

However, they’ll have taken heart by the way Liverpool ran rings around the Cottagers on Monday night. The west London outfit had been making steady progress under Mark Hughes and the Welshmen will probably send his charges out with a flea in their ear after the defeat earlier in the week.

Match bet – Birmingham HT/Draw FT @ 14/1

Liverpool v Tottenham (4pm)

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp looks like a man under pressure at the moment after Tottenham’s capitulation this season. The north London club were being mentioned in the same breath as title challengers in the first half of the season.

However, since the turn of the year, Spurs have won just 7 out of their last 23 games in all competitions. That has seen Redknapp’s men tumble down the table and out of the Champions League qualification spots.

Contrast that with Liverpool’s resurgence and you get two teams going in different directions. The Reds have won six of the last eight in the league and victory for them on Sunday will see them confirm a place in next season’s Europa League.

While the end of the season can’t come soon enough for Tottenham, Liverpool will be keen for it to continue. Luis Suarez, Dirk Kuyt and Maxi Rodriquez have all been lethal in front of goal recently and they should have too much for Spurs’ shaky backline.

Match bet – Dirk Kuyt to score anytime @15/8

Arsenal v Aston Villa (4pm)

The Gunners title challenge finally fizzled out at Stoke last week but there is still something to play for in their final two matches. With Manchester City just two points behind in fourth Arsenal could find themselves having to qualify for next season’s Champions League if they don’t pick up another win.

Arsenal are very strong at home and with the pressure off you might see a bit more free-flowing football from Arsene Wenger’s men. For Villa, they are all but safe and that will be a relief for their fans when you consider they face Liverpool on the last day of the season. A 1-1 draw with Wigan last week won’t fill Villa supporters with confidence they will get anything out of their trip to north London.

Match bet – Both teams to score @ 5/6

Chelsea v Newcastle (1:30pm)

The first match of the day comes last on our Premier League preview due to the dead rubber nature of the game. Neither Chelsea or Newcastle have much to play for other than pride and places, with the title race and relegation battle over for both clubs.

Carlo Ancelotti will have a tough job on his hands to pick up his players after their defeat at Old Trafford, especially in what is likely to be a sombre attitude at Stamford Bridge. However, Newcastle’s awful away form should play into the Blues’ hands – the Toon having picked up maximum points on the road just twice in the last 12 matches. The two clubs drew in this season’s clash at St James’ Park, but Chelsea should end their home campaign on a high.

Wigan

Boss Roberto Martinez was unable to bring in the 21-year-old Argentinian striker on loan as he already has two loan players from Premier League clubs, which is the maximum allowed.

Martinez has already signed Manchester United?s Tom Cleverley on a temporary basis as well as goalkeeper Ali Al-Habsi from Bolton.

Wigan wanted to bring in Al-Habsi on a permanent deal, but their Premier League rivals quoted £3million for him which took him out of the equation for the Latics.

Martinez has also agreed a deal with free agent Mexico World Cup striker Guillermo Franco but he has yet to sort out terms.

The frustrated Wigan boss said: “The restrictions from the Premier League do not help young players in this country.

“You can bring in as many foreign loans as you want but only two from here. It is unfair on the clubs and the talent coming through.”

The Wigan boss took some of the pressure off himself following his side?s dismal start to the season when the Latics won 1-0 at Spurs on Saturday, in one of the shocks of the season so far in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Martinez says the way is still open, but very difficult, for midfielder Charles N’Zogbia to force his way back into the Wigan side.

The 24-year-old looked to be on his way to Birmingham last week, after a deal was agreed between the two clubs. But the move broke down over the Blues? failure to agree personal terms.

“Obviously we agreed a fee with another Premier League club and it seemed that transfer was going to go ahead,” Martinez told Sky Sports News.

“Now, the situation is up in the air. Charles is a Wigan Athletic player and he needs to do a lot on the training ground to persuade this group of players to open up and allow him to come in and fight for a place.”

“It’s difficult to accept that certain players don’t want to be committed and don’t want to be at the football club. It’s very, very difficult to see a way back for Charles,” he added.

Wigan

The Latics just managed to beat the drop this season and it is going to take more than the arrival of Alcarez to prevent them from being sucked into another relegation battle in the next campaign.

Roberto Martinez’s men played some great stuff at times and looked world beaters when turning over both Chelsea and Arsenal at the DW Stadium but they were far too inconsistent and hovered just above relegation all season.

The 9-1 hammering at Tottenham earlier in the season highlighted all their frailties, while the 8-0 defeat at Chelsea, albeit with 10 men for much of the game, showed Martinez has a stack of work to do.

At least he recognises the problem areas and the Spaniard believes that Alcaraz will add some much-needed quality at the back.

“We are thrilled to have been able to capture a player of calibre of Antolin,” Martinez told the club’s website.

“I think everyone will realise what a quality player he is when we see him at the World Cup for Paraguay.

“He is a highly versatile defender with great awareness and distribution and has great pride in keeping clean sheets.

“He is entering the best period of his career and is looking forward to adding to his international and European experience, as well as playing for his country in the World Cup.”

Martinez needs even more quality if Wigan are to edge their way up towards the top 10 but it is not the only problem he faces this summer.

Trying to keep his best players will also be a difficult job as the vultures are already starting to circulate.

There are already rumours doing the rounds suggesting Charles N’Zogbia is a target for Birmingham, while there will be no shortage of interest in Hugo Rodallega this summer.

Wigan are without doubt a selling club and any big offers that come in will be accepted. That has been proven in the past when the likes of Wilson Palacios, Antonion Valencia and Lee Cattermole have all been allowed to leave as soon as the big money comes out.

Even so there is still plenty to be optimistic about at Wigan. It is not that long since they were playing in the non-league and the fact they are turning themselves into an established Premiership club is a near miracle.

They will flirt with danger again but Martinez will be confident of again beating the drop, especially if he can keep his top men and draft a few more in at the same time.

Arsenal

It seemed as if it was going to be a good day at the office for Arsene Wenger’s men, after a fairly tight opening to the match England international Theo Walcott broke the deadlock before the interval with a clever finish to ensure Arsenal enjoyed a one goal lead at the break.

Just three minutes into the second half Mikael Silvestre looked to have put the game to bed when his header found the back of the net, and it appeared as if Arsenal would cruise to victory over a Latics side who had failed to breakdown a patchwork Portsmouth team earlier in the week.

However, Wigan had other ideas and with 10 minutes remaining Ben Watson pulled a goal back for the home side with a low drive that gave Arsenal keeper Lukasz Fabianski no chance.

Defender Titus Bramble then levelled matters with less than a minute of normal time remaining when his header from close range was judged to have crossed the line by he linesman, before Charles N’Zogbia unleashed an exquisite shot from the edge of the area that curled into the goal in injury time to secure an improbable victory for the Latics.

The defeat leaves Arsenal six points adrift of league-leaders Chelsea with just three games to go and it seems as if the title is now way out of reach for Wenger, who will be seething after seeing his side throw away their two goal advantage.

However, victory for Wigan (16/1 to be relegated) could prove vital in their bid to avoid the drop.  The Latics were just four points clear of the bottom three prior to kick-off today but they’re now seven points ahead of third bottom Hull City and they should now have secured Premier League football at the DW Stadium for another season after all but ending Arsenal’s title chances.

At the top of the table Chelsea, who are a point clear of Manchester United in second, remain favourites to secure the title (Chelsea 4/7 to win the Premier League title), while Arsenal will know their hopes of securing their first title since 2004 are all but over.

In terms of the relegation battle the result was massive for Wigan, who still have to face relegation rivals West Ham and Hull City, as they move seven points clear of the drop zone.
