3 deals to set summer alight

Next week sees the return to pre-season training for Premier League clubs and, with just over a month to go until the season kicks-off, the transfer activity is hotting up.

Here we look at three of the top deals done so far and assess what impact the players involved in the moves could have in 2011/12.

The past week has seen several Premier League clubs begin their summer rebuilding for real and it is only going to get busier ahead of the new campaign – which begins on August 13.

Plenty of money has been spent already with Sunderland the most active club so far but how will these three players fare after completing moves already this summer?

Jordan Henderson – Sunderland to Liverpool

This was one of the early transfers struck as Liverpool (10/1 – Premier League outright) landed the midfielder before he headed out for England Under 21’s disappointing European Championship campaign in Denmark.

There were many raised eyebrows as the Reds forked out £16million for a player who undoubtedly has potential but has only had one full season in the Premier League.

It certainly represents a risk for Kenny Dalglish to have paid so much for someone relatively unproven but those in the know reckon the 21-year-old will go on to become a real star.

It may be several years before the Merseysiders get the best out of the level-headed youngster and he is by no means guaranteed a starting role with Steven Gerrard, Raul Meireles, Lucas and the imminent arrival of Charlie Adam all set to mean competition for places will be tough.

But expect Henderson to live up to the hype – even if it takes him a few months to settle at Anfield.

Ashley Young – Aston Villa to Manchester United

Some Villa fans have afforded themselves a wry chuckle that United have paid around £17million for Young, who was often inconsistent last season and overshadowed at times by Stewart Downing at Villa Park.

However, on his day the former Watford man is one of the best wingers around and is only going to improve at 25.

He will have to work on the defensive side of his game and will face competition from Antonio Valencia and Nani at Old Trafford, but Sir Alex Ferguson rarely makes big-money mistakes so the England man will no doubt go on to become a key player for the champions (13/8f – Premier League outright) and should provide the perfect service from out wide for Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney and co.

Connor Wickham – Ipswich to Sunderland

There has been hype about the 18-year-old Wickham since he burst onto the scene two years ago with his imposing physical frame and deft touch belying his tender age.

He was a real star at times for Town in the Championship last season, featuring regularly, and he scored eight goals despite often being used out wide by Paul Jewell in the second half of the season.

The price the Black Cats paid – an initial £8m that could rise to £12m with add-ons – is definitely high for someone so young but the fact Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham were all also interested shows how highly rated he is.

However, the step up to the Premier League will be tough for the teenager to begin with and it could take him a year or so before he finds his feet at the Stadium of Light (Sunderland 8/1 to be relegated).

Top Ten January deals

It was the busiest January transfer window since its inception, with a mixture of big-money deals, loan switches and free transfer moves. Here’s who we think are the top ten signings during the month…….

1 Fernando Torres (Chelsea – £50m)

He may have cost Chelsea £50m, but the Premier League champions are guaranteed goals from one of the world’s top strikers. Torres (20/1 Top Premier League 2010-11 Goalscorer) is still only 26 and his goalscoring record of 65 goals in 102 appearances for Liverpool highlights just what Roman Abramovich is buying.

2  Luis Suarez (Liverpool – £23m)

Liverpool (14/1 Top Four Finish) may have sold Torres and brought in Andy Carroll as his replacement, but Suarez looks set to be the man to deliver goals for the Reds. Ok, the Dutch league is not as strong as the Premier League, but 81 goals in 110 starts for Ajax proves he is deadly in and around the area.

3 Daniel Sturridge (Bolton – Loan)

Bolton have pulled off a coup with the loan capture of Chelsea youngster, who needs regular action under his belt. The former Manchester City man is still only 21 and with a run in the team, Sturridge could fire Bolton (20/23 to beat Wolves) into the European frame this season.

4 Darren Bent (Aston Villa – £24m)

It may have caused a war-of-words between Villa and Sunderland, but already Bent’s arrival at Villa Park seems to have galvanised Gerard Houllier’s men. A goal on his debut gave Villa (12/1 to be relegated) victory over Man City and they have won all three games since his arrival from Wearside.

5 Mark van Bommel (AC Milan – Free Transfer)

The Dutch midfielder was release from his contract at Bayern Munich and has joined Milan on a six-month deal. Van Bommel is another experienced name to add to the Milan (7/10 to win 2010-11 Serie A title) ranks and he will go in search for a fourth league title in a different country.

6 El Hadji Diouf (Rangers – Loan)

It’s fair to say the Senegalese international is not the most popular player with opposing fans, but the 30-year-old has the ability to be a big success in Scotland. Diouf had been a regular under Sam Allardyce but has been allowed to leave under new Blackburn boss Steve Kean, with Rangers (23/20 to win 2010-11 SPL title) likely to hand him a more attacking role.

7 Jamie O’Hara
(Wolves – Loan)

The Spurs midfielder has moved to Molineux until the end of the season and could provie the guile that Wanderers (6/5 to stay up) need to avoid the drop. O’Hara has not played this term due to injury so will be fresh and has the experience of a relegation scrap under his belt after a spell with Portsmouth last season.

8 Aaron Ramsey (Cardiff – Loan)

The Welsh youngster returns to his former club in an attempt to bolster his match sharpness and he could get the Bluebirds’ promotion push (Cardiff 7/5 to be promoted) back on track. Ramsey is expected to be a Premier League star of the future and he will add much needed midfield options for Dave Jones.

9 Curtis Davies
(Birmingham – Undisclosed)

The former West Brom man makes another Midlands switch, with a controversial move between big rivals Villa and Birmingham (2/7 to stay up). Davies showed his quality whilst on loan at Leicester this season and Blues need defensive reinforcements with Scott Dann out for the rest of the campaign.

10 Kris Commons
(Celtic – £300,000)

The Scotland international has already shown he could be a snip, making an inspired debut in Celtic’s 4-1 crushing of Aberdeen in the CIS Cup semi-final. Commons scored in that game and his goal threat, as well as quality from set pieces, could be a key factor for the Bhoys (9/4 to win Scottish FA Cup).

Deals hot up as clubs chase the dream

The transfer window closes in 12 days’ time and with several big moves already sealed but plenty more expected – including the eagerly-awaited next destination of Robbie Keane – we assess how January’s dealings may help – or hinder – Premier League teams in the second half of the season.

The shock move of the month so far was completed on Tuesday when Darren Bent joined Aston Villa in a record £18million switch from Sunderland as Gerard Houllier attempts to put the brakes on his side’s slide into a relegation battle.

No doubt Bent will find the goals Villa have been missing and, although he is possibly a tad over-priced, it seems like good business by Randy Lerner.

Villa’s aim will not only be to avoid the drop but to also push on and look for European qualification now that Bent is on board. They are a much better side than their current position of 17th suggests and don’t bet against them securing a top-six finish (16/1) if the likes of Marc Albrighton, Stewart Downing, Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor all gel in what’s left of the campaign.

Man City’s huge £27m purchase of Edin Dzeko should again ensure the Eastlands outfit are the biggest spenders of the month. No surprise there, then.

But what may come as a surprise to some is just how well-placed Roberto Mancini’s side are in the title race heading into February. City are level on points with local rivals United at the top – albeit after playing two games more – but may just have the squad now to go on and win the Premier League (6/1), with a fearsome collection of attacking talent that includes David Silva, Mario Balotelli, Dzeko, James Milner, Adam Johnson and Carlos Tevez.

Spurs fans will be looking forward to the rest of the season, too, following the capture of Steven Pienaar from Everton – an astute £3million purchase by Harry Redknapp as he looks to keep his squad ticking over into the final months of the season.

A second-successive top-four finish looks nigh-on nailed on (13/8) for the north Londoners now, with the possibility of a few more quality arrivals, knowing Harry, in the days that remain this month that would surely only add to their chances of sneaking into the title race.

Liverpool interim boss Kenny Dalglish has identified targets to bolster his underperforming squad this month but time appears to be running out at Anfield as the Reds seem no closer to tying up any deals of note this month.

A serious injection of top-class talent is required at Anfield and, if Kenny can lure striker Luis Suarez from Ajax, a decent winger and a couple of defenders, then maybe Liverpool can push for a Euro berth as well (Top 6 Finish – 2/1). If not, a top-ten finish  is about the best Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and co can hope for.

Elsewhere, there have been some minor, if no less astute, deals done by clubs hoping to preserve their top-flight status in 2011. Birmingham are no strangers to splashing the cash and expect Alex McLeish to bring in at least one major signing to add to the loan capture of David Bentley from Spurs, while Stoke and Newcastle have tied up permanent deals for impressive on-loan pair Jermain Pennant and Hatem Ben Arfa respectively.

Blackburn have money to spend as their ambitious owners want to lure more big names, to follow Roque Santa Cruz, over to Ewood Park while Fulham boss Mark Hughes believes winger Shaun Wright-Phillips is the man to get the Cottagers moving up the table.

The speculation rumour mill is gearing itself up for overdrive in the next fortnight so expect more deals, some shocks and some wholly predicted transfers to keep you ‘entertained’ throughout the rest of the month as teams look for that added bit of spark or quality to give them a chance to dream of fourth – or maybe just 17th – in the Premier League. Just don’t expect too much from Keane, wherever he goes!
