Liverpool v West Brom – Premier League Betting Preview

Jamie CarragherAfter securing two away draws on the bounce in their most recent Premier League games Liverpool should be keen to secure a win here with the home advantage, in order to make their second half push up the table. However with only two points between them and West Brom in the table it could be a close game, and The Baggies will be after the same thing. Liverpool are our hot favourite to come out victorious at 4/11 however with West Brom at 17/2, and Liverpool are entering the match in far better form.

Rodgers a risk for Liverpool

Liverpool (40/1 – Premier League Outright Winners 2012/13) have finally ended a very public and possibly embarrassing hunt to find their new manager and confirmed Brendan Rodgers as the man who takes over from Kenny Dalglish in the Anfield hot-seat.

Despite those in the Reds hierarchy, in particular chairman Tom Werner, claiming the Swansea manager was always their first choice, the way they seemed to publicly chase Roberto Martinez, and also Louis van Gaal , casts some doubts over the claims Rodgers was number one on their shopping list.

But it is Rodgers who all the Liverpool fans will hope ends their long-awaited title drought and end their fall from grace. There is no doubting the history of Liverpool, how great they were in the 1970s and 80s, but this Liverpool is completely different and anyone thinking their new boss can transform them into a side capable of challenging Manchester City and Manchester United straightaway is from another planet (City 11/8, United 2/1 – Premier League Outright Winners 2012/13).

Rodgers leapt to people’s attention when Jose Mourinho head-hunted him to run the Chelsea youth team, then the reserve team, and he took his first senior managerial role at Watford in 2008. The Northern Irishman did well enough to guide them to safety but within eight months his eyes flickered elsewhere and he was off, jumping at the opportunity to take over at Reading (11/10 – Premier League Relegation 2012/13).

It was a shocking time for Rodgers at the Madejski Stadium and he was given the boot before Christmas 2009 after a string of terrible results, and then he spent seven months unemployed. This was a period where he failed to get an interview for a League Two position he had applied for. Ask any Liverpool fan back then if they would ever want this man to manage their side and you would have got laughed off Merseyside.

Finally, Swansea (5/2 – Premier League Relegation 2012/13) took a punt on Rodgers and handed him the lifeline and that started a rise to prominence that resulted in him getting the Anfield hot-seat. It is true that he got Swansea playing great football and they have over-achieved during his time there, but it remains that Rodgers has got a massive job after only one season of managing in the Premier League and the pressures at Liverpool will grossly increase compared to the Liberty Stadium.

There is a lot of work to be done at Liverpool and it would require a miracle if he can get the current crop at Anfield playing the same type of football he won plaudits for in Wales. The likes of Andy Carroll, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing have been highly derided and Rodgers will need to make the decision of whether to stick with the struggling troops or kick them out the Anfield exit door.

The Liverpool board are likely to throw money at the problem – like they have always seemed to do in recent years – and there remains the chance Rodgers could go the same way of Roy Hodgson.

If the Reds are struggling down the table come Christmas then the fans are likely to start screaming for the manager’s head again. The hardest thing Rodgers has to do is to calm down the expectations of the Liverpool fans – a top-six finish would be good, top four amazing, but winning the title nigh on impossible.

What next for Liverpool?

Liverpool decided to axe club legend Kenny Dalglish after just 18 months in charge on Wednesday and talk immediately turned to who will replace him as manager at Anfield?

Some may say the decision to sack the Scot was a harsh one, given that he led his beloved Reds to the FA Cup final having already securing the Carling Cup, but ultimately results in the Premier League did not meet expectations and whoever comes in will have to hit the ground running next season.

There are plenty of names flying about already but Liverpool may choose to take their time in order to make the best-possible appointment and here are our thoughts on the three early favourites to take charge at Anfield.

Andre Villas-Boas – 2/1

The Portuguese tactician lasted just nine months at Chelsea and will be desperate for a speedy return to management.  Villas-Boas, or AVB as he came to be known as in the press, was a target for Liverpool before he joined Chelsea but as a free agent he may appeal to the Anfield hierarchy perhaps keen to recruit on the cheap.

For:

Villas-Boas is a free agent and as such the club won’t have to pay any compensation to secure him as manager. The 37-year-old managed Portuguese side Porto for just one year but led them to four trophies, including the Europa League and the league title – with Porto undefeated in the Portuguese league for the entirety of the campaign. Villas-Boas is the youngest manager ever to win a European competition and will have the hunger to succeed after his struggles at Stamford Bridge.

Against:

There is no getting away from the fact Villas-Boas failed to impress at Chelsea.  Rumours suggested he couldn’t control, or had lost control of, the dressing room and the fact that Roberto Di Matteo managed to turn things around at the Blues so quickly after his departure will certainly raise questions as to whether he has what it takes to manage big players with big egos and succeed in the Premier League.

Roberto Martinez – 4/1

The current Wigan boss worked miracles at the DW Stadium this season to drag the Latics away from the drop zone.  The Spaniard also enjoyed a successful spell as manager of Swansea and Martinez is the second favourite to replace Dalglish.

For:

Martinez led Wigan to safety against all odds this season, picking up improbable wins over Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool along the way, and the Latics played an attractive brand of football too. Martinez is a manager who likes to play a free-flowing passing game, something the owners will want while he also has a decent record in the transfer market, having signed the likes of Victor Moses, Mohammed Diame and Ali Al-Habsi during his time as Latics boss.

Against:

Martinez may have led Wigan to safety but he was also the manager who led them into danger in the first place. The Latics struggled until the closing stages of the campaign and at one point many expected the Spaniard to be axed by Wigan chairman Dave Whelan.

It is easier to close the gap at the bottom than it is at the top and a late surge up the table won’t be enough for the Liverpool faithful. Martinez also has no experience of European football as a manager but does have five years experience as a boss.

Brendan Rodgers – 5/1

The current Swansea boss comfortably led the Welsh side to safety in their debut Premier League campaign. When it seemed as if Harry Redknapp was set to take charge of England, Rodgers was immediately highlighted as a potential successor at Spurs. Swansea were never really involved in the relegation battle, despite being tipped by many to drop straight back down to the Championship, and were hailed for their attacking, attractive brand of football.

For:

The former Watford and Reading boss has a great record in the transfer market as well as on the pitch, having picked up the likes of Scott Sinclair, Michel Vorm and Danny Graham for the Swans. Swansea had a formidable record at the Liberty Stadium and their home form was key to their survival, and with Liverpool’s form at Anfield considered a major factor in Dalglish’s exit, it comes as little surprise that Rodgers has been tipped to take charge at Anfield.

Against:

A big stumbling block is his lack of experience. He has overseen just one campaign in the Premier League, with the rest of his managerial experience coming at Championship level.  Rodgers has never managed in European competition and has been a manager for just four years, with spells at Watford and Reading before he joined Swansea.

The Others
:

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez still lives on Merseyside, is currently without a club and is seeking a return to management. The Spaniard can be backed at 10/1 to be given another chance at Anfield and has made it clear in the past he would relish a return to take charge of the Reds.

Former Barcelona and current Saudi Arabia boss Frank Rijkaard is 8/1, as is former England boss Fabio Capello. Some outsiders include Fulham boss Martin Jol, priced at 50/1, while Pep Guardiola, who stepped down as manager of Barcelona at the end of the season, is an unlikely 33/1 to succeed Dalglish.

Liverpool look for revenge

Liverpool will look for revenge their FA Cup final defeat by Chelsea at Wembley on Saturday when the two sides meet again in the Premier League at Anfield on Tuesday night (Liverpool 11/8, draw 12/5, Chelsea 15/8 – 90 minutes).

Reds boss Kenny Dalglish and his side will still be hurting after they failed to show up for the first hour of the showpiece of the famous old cup competition in the capital.

The impact of striker Andy Carroll (13/2 first goalscorer) was a big boost to his side when he came on against the Blues and he may well have earned himself a place in the starting line-up for Tuesdays rematch.

With his ability to unsettle defenders and at last, signs of quality in front of goal after a barren spell for the Merseyside outfit, Carroll looked more like the player Liverpool invested so much money in over a year ago.

The former Newcastle frontman was unlucky not to score the equaliser at Wembley, with his header in the dying stages of the game cleared off the line by Petr Cech, who has been superb between the sticks in recent months.

With the likes of David Luiz and Gary Cahill still out of action through injury, Carroll should be able to produce another dominant performance if he can recreate that same energy as he did for the cameras at Wembley.

Luis Suarez (11/2 first goalscorer) failed to make a real impact in the cup final but he has looked in good form of late and the makeshift Chelsea backline will be fully aware what the Uruguayan international is capable of.

As for Chelsea they go into this game on a high after their first trophy of the season and they will be looking to make it a historic double if they can overcome Bayern Munich in their own back yard in the Champions League final on May 19.

Following their defeat to Newcastle last week, Chelseas chances of finishing in the top four took a serious blow and now their best chance of playing Champions League football next season, is by winning the prestigious tournament this term.

For this reason we may well see a much-changed Chelsea outfit fielded by interim manager Roberto di Matteo, who will certainly have one eye on their showdown in Munich less than two weeks away.

Fernando Torres, who started the FA Cup final on the bench, could be given a starting role against the club he left for a British transfer record of £50m.

The former Reds striker has started to show glimpses of the form that made him an exciting prospect on Merseyside and having scored the goal that seal Chelsea’s place in the Champions League final after a torrid season, it would be no surprise to see Torres (13/2 first goalscorer) pop up with a goal against his former employers.

Recent games between these two teams would suggest this match is bound to be another exciting encounter but with Chelsea distracted by European matters, Liverpool might just get the revenge they want after a disappointing weekend.

Liverpool must find momentum

There are two Premier League matches (totesport coupon) on Tuesday and both, on paper, look like mid-table affairs without too much hinging on them. But, at a closer look, there’s plenty of intriguing side-stories as Liverpool prepare for the FA Cup final and also look for a win against Fulham as they bid to finish above Merseyside rivals Everton, who themselves go to Stoke, in the table.

Liverpool v Fulham (7.45pm)

The Reds (4/7 – 90 minutes) will certainly have one eye on Wembley as they welcome the Cottagers (11/2) to Anfield and boss Kenny Dalglish could even play a shadow side as he guards against injuries and suspensions for the important Cup Final date with Chelsea.

However, on the other hand, Liverpool will want to build on their 3-0 win at Norwich on Saturday so they can approach the weekend with momentum and in better form than they have generally been in over the past few months.

Andy Carroll missed the win at Carrow Road as a precaution so he could start, but hat-trick hero Luis Suarez, skipper Steven Gerrard and key defenders Martin Skrtel, Glen Johnson and Daniel Agger are all likely to be among several first-choice players rested.

The likes of Dirk Kuyt (13/2 first goalscorer), Craig Bellamy, Maxi Rodriguez and Jonjo Shelvey, then, are set to carry the attacking threat while relatively inexperienced trio Martin Kelly, Jon Flanagan and Sebastian Coates could earn starts in defence.

With this in mind, Fulham may just fancy their chances of becoming the latest side to frustrate the Reds at Anfield and come away with a positive result.

The Cottagers were well beaten on Merseyside on Saturday when they lost 4-0 at Everton and, after what has been a decent season overall for Martin Jol’s side, they are likely to put on a better performance than that on Tuesday.

Moussa Dembele, Andy Johnson and Pavel Pogrebynak can cause Dalglish’s side problems, while the impressive Clint Dempsey, who scored the winner in Fulham’s 1-0 win over the Reds at home earlier in the campaign, is good value to open the scoring at 15/2.

All things considered, then, with Liverpool set to field largely a second-string side, Fulham can profit and claim at least a draw from this, on offer at a tasty 3/1 with totesport.

Prediction: 1-1 (13/2 – correct score).

Stoke v Everton (7.45pm)

These two have just about satisfied pre-season expectations and look like ending the season being comfortable in mid-table, although the Toffees (13/8 – 90 minutes) will hope to push on in the final league games to try and make up for the heartbreaking Cup semi-final defeat against Liverpool by finishing above the Reds in the standings.

David Moyes’s side, apart from that Wembley loss, have been in superb form of late and followed up the impressive, and deserved, 4-4 draw at Manchester United with that 4-0 mauling of Fulham at Goodison on Saturday.

Nikica Jelavic has been nothing short of a revelation since he joined from Rangers and he added two more goals to his Blues account against the Cottagers so is worth backing to continue that form at the Britannia Stadium (11/8 to score anytime).

Add to that the excellent recent form of Steven Pienaar, Marouane Fellaini and the returning Tim Cahill, and the Potters have plenty to fear ahead of this clash.

Stoke, priced at 7/4 (90 minutes), have faltered somewhat in recent weeks but got a decent point against third-placed Arsenal on Saturday and are always a real handful for anyone at home.

Both sides are likely to make changes with this game coming just three days after the weekend so it could be a tight encounter with little to choose between the two sides overall.

Stoke may just have the edge, though, with home advantage proving key and a narrow win for the Potters is predicted to move them up level with West Brom in 10th with two games to go.

Prediction: Stoke 2-1 Everton (10/1 – correct score).
