Five-way relegation dogfight?

The new Premier League season is just over a month away, with champions Manchester City the 5/4 favourites to retain their crown, but who will be preparing for the Championship in 12 months’ time?

Last season’s relegation battle was full of high drama on the final day as QPR gave City a real scare before Roberto Mancini’s Blues found a way to win the game and claim the Premier League for the first time.

City became the fifth club to have won the title since leagues were reorganised in 1992 – Manchester United, Arsenal, Blackburn and Chelsea are the others – but QPR still survived as Bolton could only draw at Stoke City.

The Trotters were joined by Blackburn Rovers and Wolves in dropping out of the top flight as all three promoted sides – Rangers, Norwich and Swansea – managed to survive.

New for 2012-13 are Southampton, Reading and West Ham, with the Hammers going up via the play-offs and, at 2/1, the shortest price of the trio to suffer relegation.

Saints are currently 5/4 shots while the Royals, who have secured new investment, are priced at 11/10 for the drop.

While it is no surprise to see Southampton and Reading the favourites for relegation, there must also be concern for a few of the Premier League clubs – some more established than others – with Wigan as short as 3/2.

Latics have flirted with the dreaded drop for years now but always seem to put a slow start behind them before powering away to safety once the weather starts to warm up again.

History suggests their luck will eventually run out one day and that time could well be nigh.

Saints have done what Norwich (13/8) did and come straight up from League One via the Championship in consecutive seasons and in Nigel Adkins they have a manager who can follow the Canaries’ blueprint.

However, the side from Norfolk paid the price for their success when boss Paul Lambert was tempted away to Aston Villa, who flirted with the drop themselves last term.

Norwich have turned to Chris Hughton and he represents a safe pair of hands for the Carrow Road faithful, with Villa’s relative lack of investment over the last couple of seasons meaning they are likely to be nearer the bottom three than the top four.

Swansea (2/1) are also in the same boat as Norwich and must hope Michael Laudrup hits the ground running given the fact the Danish legend never played in England during an illustrious playing career which took in the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona.

QPR are 9/2 for the drop but it must be remembered  they were tipped to stay up this time last year and only managed it by the skin of their teeth.

However, Mark Hughes has had more time to strengthen than Neil Warnock got last season given the timing of the Tony Fernandes takeover, and the Welshman has significantly made sure the spine of QPR’s team is now ready for more than just a survival battle.

Blades set to bounce back

Having come so close to securing a return to the Championship last term, Sheffield United (League One outright 6/1) should be able to finish the job in League One this time around.

The Blades (7/4 League One promotion) were cruelly denied a return to the second tier of English football, as they went down to Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town in a thrilling penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium.

What will have hurt the red half of the city more will be the fact their arch rivals Sheffield Wednesday did secure promotion but it should not be too long before the men from Bramall Lane meet their old foes in the league once again.

Like Wednesday, Huddersfield and teams like Stoke City and Leeds United have seen in the past, League One is a tricky competition to get out of.

Disappointment tends to precede success and under manager Danny Wilson they certainly have an experienced man in the game, who should be able to get them promotion if not claim the title.

However there are plenty of teams in the mix for the League One crown, who will certainly have a big say as to who will be celebrating come the business end of the season.

MK Dons (8/1 League One outright) are a side that have spent far too much time in the third tier and it’s about time they put a decent run together and challenged for the automatic places.

Manager Karl Robinson is a relatively young talent in the game and at 31-year-old already appears to be having a strong influence on the team.

Everything is in place at this club to achieve great things, from the impressive 22,000 seater stadium to an exciting manager but of course it all comes down to the players and who the Dons (5/2 League One promotion) can bring in over the summer.

From the teams that have come down from the Championship last season, Coventry City (11/1 League One outright) look like they could be the best of a group that are in bad positions.

Both Portsmouth and Doncaster Rovers have their troubles and the financial situation with the Sky Blues is dubious too.

However with signings like the promising John Fleck from Rangers, the club can still attract talent and they should be able to challenge for at least the playoff places, if not better, but a strong start will be crucial.

Much of lower league football is about momentum and how often have we seen sides leap through the tables when they grasp that winning mentality?

The likes of Swansea City and Norwich City have proved it can be done and Swindon Town (3/1 League One promotion) look like a side who could make another quick rise.

They will certainly be outsiders for the title this season but under eccentric and passionate manager Paulo Di Canio they have a man who will not be content with a mediocre season in mid-table.

So keep an eye out on the Robins, who could be there or thereabouts come May next year, when all will be decided in what looks set to be an intriguing season in League One.

Если есть среди ставок сегодняшнего дня «верняк», то это именно победа Федерера! В самом неподходящем случае для швейцарца должна случится травма, и он не сможет продолжить борьбу в матче. Но я лично не припомню случая, когда Роджер Федерер не заканчивал встречу.

Для тех кто наблюдал за полуфиналами не станет секретом то, что Федерер в матче с Джоковичем продемонстрировал фантастический уровень игры и по всем статьям переиграл серба. Сделано это было настолько красиво, что думаю, многие поклонники тенниса еще ни раз, и ни два пересмотрят этот матч.

А что продемонстрировал Маррей? Все как обычно, сражение с собственной нервной системой. Особенно показательна была ситуация в четвертом сете, когда Энди, взяв подачу соперника, можно было просто держать свою, но нет Маррей не ищет легких путей и зрители получили настоящий лихо закрученный триллер. Благо, Тсонга такой же  «мастер» придумывания проблем себе самому. Ну а чем еще объяснить, когда на своих подачах оба теннисиста начинают играть, только доведя гейм до счета 15:40!

Но Роджер – это не Джо-Вилфред, он не даст ни малейшего шанса. Да, воспитанный Федерер уже успел похвалить Маррея за то, как он справляется с давлением, но это не более чем вежливый реверанс в сторону соперника. Маррей уже исполнил мечту всей нации и вышел в финал Уимблдона, но боюсь, что со времен Фреда Перри не настал тот день, когда британец вновь одержит победу на Уимблдоне.

Не подумайте, что мне совсем не нравится Маррей, нет, он веселый парень и у его собаки собственный акаунт в твиттере, но переиграть Федерера 1.40 он сегодня не сможет, уж больно хорошо играет Роджер.

Буду совершенно не удивлен, если матч завершиться в трех сетах…

Английская погода не знает усталости, что на Уимблдоне, что теперь на Сильверстоуне дождь «путает все карты» теннисистам и гонщикам.Alonso rain 1 300x211 Фернандо Алонсо выигрывает квалификацию Гран При Великобритании!! Дождь просто царит над Англией, и если на Уимблдоне на центральном корте могут закрыть крышу и продолжить, то вот трассу закрыть от осадков не получится. Благодаря непогоде квалификация длилась дольше, чем обычная гонка.

Но даже до первого «антракта» на трассе произошло много всего интересного. Для начала Виталий Петров 751.00 опередил своего партнера по команде Хейки Ковалайнена. Для россиянина это очень важно, так как находясь в не самой сильной команде крайне важно опережать партнера по команде.

Но это не самое выдающее событие первого сегмента квалификации. Любимец местной публики Дженсон Баттон умудрился занять 18-е место и не пройти даже во второй сегмент квалификации. Дженсон объяснил это тем, что не смог прогреть передние покрышки и из-за этого не получилось держать высокий темп. При этом Баттон заметил, что те, кто попали во второй и тем более третий сегмент квалификации будут вынуждены расходовать дождевые комплекты резины, а их количество строго ограниченно.

От себя добавлю, что всего на гоночный уикенд выделяется три комплекта дождевых покрышек, и в принципе этого более чем достаточно, но есть одна тонкость, этот состав резины можно «убить» за два круга, если трасса подсохла, а вы не успели пересесть на промежуточную.

В третьем сегменте квалификации гонщики напоминали фокусников, которые со скоростью «пулеметов» доставали «кроликов из шляпы». Так как трасса подсыхала, задача гонщиков заключалась в том, чтобы проехать как можно более позже, в деле просыхания трассы дорога каждая минута, а порой и секунда.

В итоге победителем квалификации стал Фернандо Алонсо, за ним в двух десятых Марк Уббер 5.50, а тройку замкнул Михаэль Шумахер 9.00.

Завтра ожидается дождевая гонка, а это означает, что может произойти все что угодно. Меня лично не удивит даже прорыв Дженсона Баттона 34.00, как минимум, в первую пятерку, а уж кто победит, угадать просто невозможно.

С учетом того, как заканчивалась квалификация у «Феррари» есть определенное преимущество.

Победа Алонсо 2.75 не вызовет удивления…

Энди Маррей – Джо-Вильфред Тсонга. За все время турнира каждый из них проиграл всего по три сета, да и провели на корте почти одинаковое время. Так что можно смело ожидать затяжного поединка равных соперников.

Со времен Тима Хенмана Британия с параноидальной навязчивостью ждет своего представителя в Финале Уимблдона. Но как Тим не мог достичь этой цели, так и для Энди Маррея 1.37 выход в финал пока остается несбыточной мечтой. Вообще очень странная ситуация, когда такая великая теннисная нация как Великобритания обладает всего одним топовым представителем в классе сильнейших теннисистов. А уж про женский британский теннис я и не говорю…

В этот раз в пользу британцев сыграл чешский теннисист Лукаш Росол, который в пятисетовом триллере обыграл
Рафаэля Надаля, чем сделал неописуемый подарок всему британскому теннису. И неважно, что сам Росол проиграл в следующем же матче, а важно то, что он таким образом «приоткрыл дверь» в финал для Энди Маррея, чем шотландец постарается воспользоваться сегодня. Хотя Тсонга совсем не подарок, но по сравнению с Надалем он не выглядит непроходимым.

Вообще вылет Надаля крайне порадовал нижнюю сетку, так как после этого каждый понимал, что турнир может и не закончиться на стадии 1/2 Финала. Отдельно стоит отметить, что британская пресса, как ей и положено, нагнетает сумасшедшее давление, которого Маррей может и не выдержать. Все же Маррей по праву считается 4-м из «теннисного квартета современности», так что не хуже остальных понимает, что такой шанс для выхода в финал упускать нельзя.

Давид Феррер заявил, что фаворитом предстоящей встречи будет Маррей, так как он просто-напросто сильнее француза. На стороне шотландца и статистика личных встреч с Тсонгой, так как за время нахождения обоих в Туре, они встречались 6 раз, и Тсонга побеждал всего единожды…

Как веселый и жизнерадостный человек Жо-Вилфред Тсонга 2.95 мне вполне симпатичен, но сегодня победить должен Маррей, для себя, для Уимблдона, для всей Британии…

Plenty have Championship claims

With July upon us, players up and down the country are returning for pre-season training with the focus on the new season. But who has realistic promotion claims in the Championship in 2012-13 in what is often an unpredictable division?

The second tier is frequently described as the most competitive league in Europe with plenty of evenly-matched teams vying for promotion, either automatically or via the end-of-season play-offs. Managers regularly say it is the hardest division to get out of and, with Wolves, Blackburn and Bolton joining the Championship ranks next season, there are several teams in contention to go up come next May.

Totesport make wealthy Leicester City the 7/4 favourites in the promotion market but the Foxes were also highly-fancied to go up last term only for that prediction to fall flat on its face when they failed to even make the play-offs after finishing a disappointing ninth.

In Nigel Pearson they have a manager highly respected in the Championship and have strengthened with the astute capture of Ritchie de Laet from Manchester United.

Add in the experience of Neil Danns and Ritchie Wellens, plus the goalscoring threat of Jermaine Beckford and you do have a side capable of beating anyone in the league.

Predictably, Bolton (5/2 to go up) and Wolves (11/4) are next in the betting to be promoted following their relegation from the Premier League in May. Both have considerable talent in their squads to cope well in the Championship – although there could be departures from the Reebok and Molineux in the coming weeks. Wolves are hoping to keep hold of key men Kevin Doyle, Matt Jarvis and Steven Fletcher amid interest from top-flight clubs and, if they do, they are good value to secure a fast return to the big time and even worth backing at 9/1 in the outright winner market.

Bolton are back at this level for the first time in 11 years and will fancy their chances of at least making the play-offs with Owen Coyle desperate to restore his reputation in the new season. They, too, have players who could leave but expect them to be in the running when it matters come the end of the campaign.

Lancashire rivals Blackburn’s summer purchases to date have caught the eye with Danny Murphy making the move along with Newcastle striker Leon Best and veteran former Portugal international Nuno Gomes. The latter may be a high-profile risk at 36 but the other two represent solid signings from Steve Kean and could be just the players to help quell the discontent at Ewood Park and inspire a promotion bid (9/2).

Other lively outsiders for promotion include Watford (8/1), under new Italian ownership and expected to have Gianfranco Zola at the helm, while traditional big clubs like Leeds (9/2), Cardiff (7/2), Nottingham Forest (5/1) and Birmingham (11/2) will be in the mix if they strengthen well and make good use of their plentiful home support.

Of the rest, promoted Charlton (13/2), Sheffield Wednesday (7/1) and Huddersfield (12/1) will look to stay up first and foremost although the Addicks could launch a shock back-to-back promotion bid, in the manner of Norwich and Southampton, under the guidance of Chris Powell if they keep their young squad intact.

It is certainly a tight division that again is hard to predict and, when looking a the promotion market, you can make a case for around three-quarters of the clubs to go on and secure a place in the Premier League come next May.

Bolton, Leicester and Wolves, then, are the early tips to battle for the title while we see Blackburn and Watford running them close. After that, provided financial restrictions are lifted and takeovers completed, Nottingham Forest and Birmingham also have good promotion claims while Charlton are dark horses.

Arsenal the losers in RVP fiasco

News of Robin van Persie’s decision not to extend his current deal at Arsenal will have come as a hammer blow to all connected to the club. The north Londoners have relied heavily on the Netherlands striker for their goals in recent seasons and if he leaves this summer, it will severely dent their chances of a top-four finish (Arsenal 4/9 Top 4 Finish).

Despite expressing his love for both the club and London throughout last season, it always seemed likely that van Persie’s days at the Emirates were numbered and now he has confirmed that he will not be penning a new deal at the club.

The main reason for his desire to move on, whether it is this summer or next, appears to be a disagreement “on the way Arsenal FC should move forward”.

Roughly translated, that means the Holland international wants to win trophies and, with Arsenal’s lack of success over the past six years, he feels his ambitions would be better served elsewhere.

That is fair enough as it is every player’s right to switch clubs when out of contract but, with only 12 months of his current deal to run, his transfer value will have fallen and the Gunners will no longer be able to demand mega bucks for their star striker.

Both management and player kept stating that there would be no negotiations until the end of the season but, given Wednesday’s announcement, that seems to have been an odd decision.

Had the 28-year-old made his feelings clearer last season, he could have been sold for a large fee in January, given that he was in the form of his life, and it may well be that Arsene Wenger decides to keep him in north London for next season to see if they can win a trophy before letting him leave for nothing.

Whatever happens, the club is the loser and it is open to debate as to whether the situation could have been handled in a better way.

It is true that Arsenal have underachieved in the past six years, with the Gunners’ faithful crying out for the Frenchman to spend some money, and Wenger has now begun to open the cheque book with the capture of Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

The two new recruits looked set to shoulder some of the burden for van Persie and may well have operated in a three-pronged attack.

With Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain providing pace and width on the flanks, it appeared as though Wenger was putting together an exciting side that may even have challenged for the title – until Wednesday’s bombshell (Arsenal 10/1 Premier League Outright).

It is unclear how exactly van Persie wants the club to move forward, as that appears to be exactly what is happening.

Arsenal have never spent vast sums of money on transfer fees and it is unlikely, given their current policy, that they will ever land a true world star of the game.

But that is not the way that the French tactician operates as he chooses to sign young players, many of them French or north African, and develop them.

The problem has been holding onto his stars once they have made a name for themselves and a succession of top players have left the club in the past few years.

Last summer’s loss of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri was a huge blow and talk at the time centred on how important it would be that van Persie did not follow suit.

But a lack of urgency to get him to pen a new deal has left the famous club with a dilemma on their hands.

There will doubtless be a number of suitors of the former Feyenoord man, with Juventus said to have already tabled an £8millon bid.

Whether or not that is true is unknown but surely a player of his standing is worth three times that amount – or would have been last season.

If he is sold during the summer transfer window then Wenger will need to plan again for next season with Podolski and Giroud’s roles changing ahead of the new campaign.

The veteran coach will have planned his tactics around having the Dutchman up front and he may now look to bring in another front man if RVP heads through the exit door.

The sight of their hero scoring goals for either of the Manchester clubs would certainly leave a bitter taste in the Arsenal fans’ mouths and, if rumours are to be believed, he would probably favour a move overseas.

The Rotterdam-born star has been linked with Barcelona and that would make for a scary attacking force at the Nou Camp with Lionel Messi still pulling the strings and scoring for fun.

There will doubtless be rumours and reported sightings of van Persie buying a house here, there and everywhere over the next few weeks, but the smart money is on him seeing out his contract with Arsenal and, in combination with the new stars, finally getting some silverware in the Emirates trophy cabinet (Arsenal 8/1 FA Cup Outright).

Прошедшие четвертьфиналы показали «кто в доме хозяин». Игра Роджера Федерера против Михаила Южного была просто образцово-показательной, иногда казалось, что Роджер помолодел лет на пять и вновь летает по корту, как во времена, когда никто не мог ничего сделать с ним на изумрудных кортах Уимблдона.

В Михаила Южного нельзя «бросить камень», так как он сделал все, что мог, но, как и в тринадцати предыдущих попытках этого оказалось мало. В одном из эпизодов Михаил попросил помощи у Андре Агасси, но даже это не помогло.

Роджер Федерер установил новый рекорд на турнирах большого шлема, он вышел в полуфинал уже в 32-й раз, таким образом, обойдя Джимми Коннорса. Сам Роджер заявляет, что он полон сил и энергии, и в отличие от Ролан Гарроса находится в прекрасном расположении духа.

Новак Джокович в параллельном матче обыгрывал Флориана Майера и надо сказать сделал это всего на 10 минут позже, чем Роджер. Размашистая, но несколько медлительная игра немца была крайне удобной для серба. Если Джокович принимал зубодробительную подачу, то далее все было делом техники.

Есть новость, которая не относится напрямую к Уимблдону, но непосредственно касается Новака Джоковоича. По причине травмы Рафаэля Надаля, по всей видимости, не состоится их благотворительный матч на Сантьяго Бернабеу в честь 110-и летия мадридского «Реала», очень жаль, но ничего не поделаешь.

Возвращаясь непосредственно к предстоящему матчу, то я уверен, что он будет затяжной и наверняка растянется на пять сетов. При всей моей симпатии к молодому Новаку Джоковичу, но фаворитом в этом матче, я бы назвал Роджера Федерера, уж больно легко и непринужденно  он выглядел в прошедшей встрече с Михаилом Южным.

Так что, я думаю победит Роджер Федерер 2.90, возможно и в 5-и сетовом противостоянии.

В немалой степени на его игровые возможности повлияет мастерство его массажистов, так как матч Денисом Истоминым продолжался более четырех часов и отнял очень много сил.

Роджер, в свою очередь, переиграв Ксавье Малиса, добился юбилейной 850-й победы в карьере. Цифра поистине выдающаяся, так как среди всех действующих теннисистов он просто лучший по этому показателю. Ну а что касается статистики за всю историю, то впереди Роджера всего пять человек.

Reasons to oppose Samba Stars

The pressure of winning a World Cup on home soil and the lack of a genuine superstar are reasons enough to oppose home nation Brazil at 7/2 (tournament outright) winning the 2014 World Cup.

Add to this the statistic that of the 13 stagings of the showpiece event, only five host nations have won it on home soil, and punters are right to look away from Mano Menezes leading the current crop of Samba Stars to world domination.

In mitigation this is a Brazil side which has yet to peak – at 28 goalkeeper Jefferson is the oldest member of the current squad – and with age comes experience.

The Brazil sides of yesteryear have had household superstars to carry the weight of expectation, but the current squad lacks that box office attraction.

Santos favourite Neymar could light up the tournament and possesses moments of magnetism, while Alexandre Pato and Hulk also have age on their side.

Thiago Silva is now in his peak years for AC Milan and left-back Marcelo offers an excellent out-ball, but a lack of experience at international level in midfield could cost Brazil.

By contrast, Spain (4/1 – 2014 World Cup outright) have just won a third successive major international tournament to consign their also-rans tag to the dustbin and look the more complete package, while the climate is unlikely to trouble them.

Germany’s exciting crop of emerging talent will benefit from a painful Euro 2012 exit (8/1 Germany – 2014 World Cup outright), while other South American nations, subject to qualifying, such as Uruguay (20/1 – 2014 World Cup outright), the top side for the region at the 2010 World Cup, will feel they too can steal Brazil’s thunder.
