Bellamy to break Cardiff hearts

Craig Bellamy has been arguably Kenny Dalglish’s shrewdest signing in his second spell in charge of Liverpool (2/5 in Match Betting) and the Welsh striker could take centre stage against his boyhood club Cardiff City (15/2, Draw 7/2) in the Carling Cup Final at Wembley on Sunday.

Bellamy (4/1 First Goalscorer), who leads Liverpool this season with six Premier League goals, missed last weekend’s FA Cup win over Brighton with a back problem, but has been passed fit to start – as has defender Daniel Agger.

The ex-Bluebirds striker insists he is a changed man since returning for a second stint at Anfield and has put his volatile days of arguments and scuffles well behind him.

Fellow striker Luis Suarez has been the one making the headlines for all the wrong reasons this season and he too may well feel he owes Dalglish and the Liverpool fans a performance in a big game after disappointing in the much-hyped affair at Old Trafford.

Suarez has scored three goals in the competition this season, including a stunner at Stoke City and could be worthy of support in the Anytime Goalscorer market (11/8) because of Cardiff’s recent defensive struggles.

Malky Mackay’s side have conceded nine goals in their last four Championship matches, which will give the Scottish tactician cause for concern as they step up in class to face a Liverpool side driven on by Steven Gerrard – who always turns up on the big occasion for his club (7/1 Two or More goals).

Liverpool have progressed to the final by recording an impressive run of wins away from Anfield against Exeter, Brighton, Stoke, Chelsea and Manchester City.

They have scored 12 goals en route, but only four of these have come in the first halves of matches – which suggests the cagey Reds could be content to win the Cup final in the second half (10/3 Draw/Liverpool in HT/FT).

Kenny Dalglish’s side have added motivation in this competition which they have won more times than any other side as a win at Wembley, their first visit since the 1996 FA Cup loss, match would see the Merseysiders equal Manchester United’s record for most English domestic cup wins.

Liverpool are facing a lower-tier opponent in the League Cup Final for the fourth time and they have won on each previous occasion, against Bolton in 1995, on penalties in Cardiff against Birmingham in 2001 and after a replay over West Ham in 1981.

And the scale of Cardiff’s task can be seen by the fact that just one of the last seven sides from outside the top tier to reach the League Cup Final has won (Sheffield Wednesday in 1991).

Cardiff’s 2-0 win over Blackburn in the quarter-finals this season was the club’s first win in 11 League Cup meetings with top-flight sides and they progressed at the expense of fellow Championship sides Leicester, Burnley and Crystal Palace – twice needing penalties.

Bluebirds striker Kenny Miller (11/2 Anytime) believes his first visit to Wembley Stadium tomorrow could result in the best moment of his playing career.

Miller has denied Liverpool before, scoring a last minute equaliser against them for Wolves at Molineux in 2004, and would love to help City frustrate them again tomorrow.

He is one of the experienced men in Cardiff’s dressing room but is not the only potential scorer for the Welsh standard bearers – who have a few midfielders with an eye for goal.

Peter Whittingham (15/2 Anytime) has 10 to his name already this season, Don Cowie (10/1) enjoyed a goalscoring purple match when he grabbed six goals in the first two months of the campaign, while Aron Gunnarsson (11/1) has been chipping in with his fair share (5 in 28 Championship starts).

Championship rivals irked by Bellamy

Chairman across the Championship are aggrieved with Manchester City for giving Craig Bellamy to Cardiff City (6/1 – Championship outright) and paying his wages, according to John Ryan.

The Doncaster chairman has criticised the moneybags regime at Eastlands for allowing the 31-year-old striker to go on a season-long loan to Cardiff and continue to pay the majority of his wages.

Bellamy scored one goal and got two assists on his debut at the weekend as the Bluebirds steamrollered Ryan’s Doncaster (16/1 – to be promoted) 4-0.

The Wales striker is on a reported £95,000 a week at City and made the switch to Cardiff despite interest in his services from Premier League sides Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham.

At a time when Championship sides like Doncaster have to scrape around to sign players on the cheap and look to the Premier League to allow younger, unproven footballers to go on loan to them, the details of Bellamy’s deal has irked a number of chairman across the country.

Ryan told the Daily Mail it is not a case of “sour grapes”, as he would have done exactly the same as Cardiff if they had the opportunity, but he is more disappointed with City for allowing the deal to happen under the circumstances it did.

He has claimed that the move is going to “distort the integrity of the Championship” and harm what is an “incredibly competitive division”.

“Handing a striker of Bellamy’s quality to Cardiff – and paying most of his wages – undermines the sanctity of the competition,” added Ryan.

“Manchester City shouldn’t have done that. I feel let down by that, as do many other Championship chairmen.”

“If everyone goes to Cardiff and gets slammed 4-0 like us, the result will be an unfair competition because Manchester City are bankrolling Cardiff’s success.”

Despite Bellamy’s successful debut for the Bluebirds, he has moved to calm down supporters who are expecting him to single-handedly bring success to the club this season.

The striker said he cannot get Cardiff promoted on his own and all the players at the club need to “step up to the plate” if success if to happen to Dave Jones’ men this season.

Cardiff face League One side Peterborough in the Carling Cup on Tuesday and after that travel to face beleaguered Portsmouth (50/1 to win the Championship) on August 28.

Bellamy named Bluebirds skipper

Wales striker Craig Bellamy has been named Cardiff City captain ahead of their Championship match against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday (Cardiff 10/11, draw 23/10, Doncaster 3/1).

Bellamy joined his home club on a season-long loan from Premier League big spenders Manchester City after he was pushed out of Roberto Mancini’s plans for the season.

The 31-year-old striker hinted that he would not be in the Italian manager’s 25-man squad for the Premier League campaign and therefore decided that he would take a step down to the Championship.

Bellamy will take the captain’s armband from Mark Hudson who will remain as club captain for the rest of the season.

Bluebirds boss Dave Jones will be looking to use the experience of his new signing as Cardiff (9/1 to win the Championship) look to gain promotion this season.

He said: “Huds is still club captain and Craig will be team captain, it’ll be no different to any other football club, you normally have two and it was an easy decision that Mark made.

“We’ve been fortunate to acquire a top player from the Premiership. Last time I looked at him he still had one nose, two eyes and two ears so he’s no different to anybody else in the camp,” he added.

The loan deal which brought Bellamy to Cardiff has angered a number of clubs including SPL side Motherwell who claim they are owed money by the Welsh side.

Cardiff did fear that the Football League would not allow the striker to play until the club had explained how they could afford his services after their well publicised financial problems.

However, the former Newcastle United and Liverpool player has been given permission to play as Cardiff take on Doncaster this weekend.

Jones believes Bellamy will fit straight into the side as he takes on his captain’s role.

He said: “He knows the boys. He’s been around with the Welsh squad and he’s been training with us in the past many times when he’s been given permission.

“He knows his way around and that makes life a little bit easier.

“It’s not just all about Craig. We’ve got a lot of other players here and we are a team, we are a close-knit team and he will add to that,” he added.

Lennon reveals Bellamy talks

Celtic boss Neil Lennon admits Aiden McGeady’s switch to Spartak Moscow will leave a massive hole in his squad, although he is in talks with Manchester City over Craig Bellamy (Celtic 8/11f – SPL Outright).

The new Bhoys chief is desperate to wrestle the SPL crown back from Old Firm rivals Rangers (11/10) this season, but he will have to do it without the winger on board.

Republic of Ireland star McGeady has moved to the Russian capital for a fee of £9.5m which should allow Lennon to draft in some replacements for the 24-year-old, with Bellamy wanted on loan.

The Wales international has been left out of City’s 25-man squad for the Premier League although Spurs are thought to be in the chase for him as well.

But Lennon still believes the loss of McGeady will be a big blow to loyal Hoops supporters.

He said: “I’m sorry to lose him, he is one of the entertainers in the game.

“We’ll probably miss out on his peak years but he came to us and said that he felt at the end of the season it would be better for him to move on.

“It’s difficult to stand in the way of someone who doesn’t want to be here.”

Lennon is hoping Bellamy’s relationship with the Celtic fans will help him land his man.

He added: “When you see someone of the calibre of Craig and the fact that he’s not in the 25 and he’s looking to go out and play football, then we feel it’s something that we can’t try and miss out on.

“We’ve been speaking to his representatives and we’ve been speaking to Man City.

“How far down the line we are will be down to Craig obviously.

“But the advantage we have is that, one, it’s not in the Premier League and, two, he has been here before and he enjoyed his time here and made a huge impact on the game up here and has a real connection with the supporters.”

Celtic kick off their Scottish Premier League campaign at Inverness on Saturday (Inverness 7/1, draw 16/5, Celtic 2/5 – 90 minutes).
