Bluebirds out to halt marching Saints

malky mackaySouthampton have once again proved how important momentum can be at the start of the Championship season, and they will hope to continue their impressive form so far when they cross the border to take on Cardiff City on Wednesday night (Cardiff 13/8, draw 23/10, Southampton 13/8).

Cardiff v Southampton

The Saints are competing at the top of the table following promotion from League One last term – continuing the trend of teams who have recently done well after coming up from the third tier.

Last season, it was the likes of Norwich City, Millwall and Leeds United who were battling near the top end early on, with the Canaries ultimately securing back-to-back promotions.

Southampton will be looking to imitate that success under manager Nigel Adkins, who has worked wonders at St Mary’s since he joined from Scunthorpe United, but his side face a tough test against a highly-respected Cardiff in midweek.

The Saints will be boosted by the return of trio Dan Harding, Radhi Jaidi and Lee Barnard (7/1 first goalscorer) who have all recovered from injuries.

Getting the first goal could be key for Southampton, as the men from the south coast have won all five games where they have taken the lead and a victory against the Bluebirds would make it their best start in the league for 58 years.

Cardiff have been on a great run of form, however, and haven’t tasted defeat in their last seven league and cup outings and will be a tough proposition – especially on their home turf.

With the way the Saints have been playing, they have the ability to get something out of this game, though, and Adkins’ side should come away from Wales with a point.

Middlesbrough v Leicester

In the only other game in the Championship on Wednesday, two title contenders – Middlesbrough and Leicester City – go head-to-head at the Riverside (Middlesbrough 5/4, draw 12/5, Leicester 21/10).

Both games between these two sides ended in draws last season with six goals being scored in the last game at the Riverside.

You can expect goals in this upcoming clash, too, with attacking threats all over the park for both clubs.

The Foxes (7/1 Championship outright) welcome back David Nugent, who has managed to recover from a hamstring injury which has ruled him out of action in the Championship for the last month.

Boro have looked strong in defence this term but, with the likes of Nugent, Darius Vassell and Jermaine Beckford in their ranks, Leicester will fancy their chances of getting on the scoresheet.

It is tough to call a winner in this one between two fairly evenly-matched sides but, based on current form, Middlesbrough should just edge it to keep the pressure on the Saints at the top of the table.

Can Seasiders halt United run?

Manchester United will aim to continue their superb unbeaten run in the Premier League when they take on Ian Holloway’s impressive Blackpool side on Tuesday evening (Man Utd to beat Blackpool – 4/11).

The seasiders will have to aim to keep a rampant United under lock and key as they will no doubt seek to come away with all three points.

Blackpool could not have chosen a tougher time to play the current Premier League Champions, who thrashed Birmingham 5-0 at the weekend.

Dimitar Berbatov has now scored three Premier League hat-tricks this season and currently has 18 league goals. (Berbatov to score a hat-trick vs Blackpool – 16/1)

However, Sir Alex Ferguson is still in three competitions with the FA Cup and Champions League on his mind he does have plenty of option to replace the Bulgarian, who he may wish to rest.

Berbatov’s team-mate John O’Shea, speaking after the demolition of Birmingham, said: “Some of the passes he was laying off for Wayne (Rooney) and Nani were great. We just have to supply him because nine times out of 10 he will score.”

Blackpool will still have the services of one of their star talents this season, Charlie Adam, having refused a £4million bid from Liverpool following their loss to Sunderland at the weekend.

Blackpool boss Holloway was less than impressed by the offer from the Anfield club, saying: “I was thinking Liverpool and Charlie. I thought fantastic what a great club for him to go to and then when I heard the bid I thought it was disgraceful.”

For the time being, Adam remains at Blackpool but come Tuesday night Manchester United will almost certainly extend their unbeaten run in the league and Holloway will have more than just transfer speculation to think about. Blackpool are just six points above the drop zone and need to start winning having picked up just three points from their last five league games.

Elsewhere on Tuesday, Aston Villa travel to Wigan off the back of a 1-0 victory over big spenders Manchester City at the weekend.

£24million man Darren Bent will want to continue his dream start for Villa after scoring the winner on his debut at the weekend (Darren Bent to score first vs Wigan – 4/1f).

Villa are just three points above the drop zone but surely have too much class in their side to be relegated this season.

Bent, speaking after the City game, said: “People questioned why I joined this football club but look at the players around me.  Ashley Young, Gabby Agbonlahor, Mark Albrighton and Stewart Downing are all players that can create chances out of nothing and as a striker you want that kind of service.”

Wigan, who will be without defender Gary Caldwell following his red card against Arsenal, will want to make sure they don’t suffer back-to-back defeats after the 3-0 thrashing they endured at the Emirates over the weekend.

Roberto Martinez will be well aware of his side’s perilous position, currently in the drop zone, and his own position should results not take a turn for the better soon.

Shakhtar can halt Gunners’ charge

Arsenal have been at their scintillating best so far in the Champions League but expect them to come unstuck when they travel to Ukraine to take on in-form Shakhtar Donetsk (19/10 match betting) on Wednesday.

The Gunners’ perfect record of three victories out of three in Group H means a win is not a must this week and, with talisman Cesc Fabregas not playing due to a minor hamstring problem, the game will present Shakhtar with a great chance of causing an upset (Shakhtar to win 2-1 – 9/1).

They too are well placed to qualify from the group along with Arsene Wenger’s men, having won two out of three games to date, and will be eager to make up for the 5-1 thumping dished out by Arsenal at the Emirates a couple of weeks ago – that loss being just their second in 30 games in all competitions.

Mircea Lucescu’s side are top of the table in Ukraine once again – five points clear of Dynamo Kiev – and look red-hot favourites to win back-to-back titles, especially if they maintain their superb early-season form.

Shakhtar have kept clean sheets in nine of their ten home games this season and Arsenal, who were soundly beaten 3-0 on their only previous trip to Donetsk in the competition back in 2000, will not have it anywhere near as easy as they did in the first game between the two sides.

Chelsea’s European campaign has been equally as smooth as Arsenal’s thus far and another win, that would secure their qualification out of Group F, is expected when Spartak Moscow visit Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are once again proving the team to match in the Premier League, having slipped up only at Manchester City so far, and it has been a similar story in Europe.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side (2/9 match betting) are again set to progress through their group with the minimum of fuss and another win against the Russian side (14/1) seems very much on the cards on Wednesday.

The three points will mean qualification is in the bag and then everyone at the club can concentrate on the tough league trip to an improving Liverpool on Sunday.

Probably the game of the night on Wednesday comes at the San Siro when Real Madrid (4/1 – Champions League outright) take on AC Milan (28/1 – outright) with the Italians out to make amends following the 2-0 reverse at the Bernabeu earlier in Group G.

Jose Mourinho took a while to win over some of the more stubborn Real fans with his brand of effective, but often negative, football, but recent high-scoring wins over Racing and Malaga prove he can win in style as well.

And Another victory this week, as he chases his third Champions League triumph, would further underline the fact that he is the best club coach on the planet.

Matchday four also sees crucial games for Auxerre and Partizan, who must win against Ajax and Zilina respectively to stand any chance of making it through, while Bayern Munich (1/10 Group E winner), who have a perfect record so far, should also book their place in the next stage with a win over Romanian outfit CFR Cluj.
