Messi dreaming of World Cup win

Argentina and Barcelona's Lionel MessiLionel Messi has admitted he still has one dream left to fulfil as he aims to help Argentina (13/8 top South American team) win their first world title since 1986.

The 22-year-old world player of the year will be one of the stars on show at this year’s tournament in South Africa having enjoyed a remarkable four years since Germany 2006.

Since then, Messi has become a super star, helping Barcelona to countless domestic and European prizes as he firmly established himself amongst the world’s elite.

Despite having won the Champions League, the Copa del Rey and La Liga, Messi says he is still as hungry as ever for success, especially when it comes to the World Cup.

The diminutive forward, nicknamed the flea in Spain, is likely to be leading the line for Argentina (13/2 World Cup winners) when the tournament kicks off.

La Albiceleste’s coach Diego Maradona is likely to start with three up front, with Messi to be paired with two of Diego Milito, Carlos Tevez, Gonzalo Higuain or Sergio Aguero.

While Messi is expected to start, there had been points in qualifying where Argentinean’s were calling for Messi to be dropped from the side after he failed to replicate his club form at international level.

While Messi has failed to shed any light on why he hasn’t been able to sparkle on the world stage for Argentina, there are those who believe the forward has fallen out with Maradona, which has affected his form for the South American nation.

Despite the problems in qualifying Messi had to endure, he is still full of confidence that he will be able to steer Argentina to world glory.

“The qualifiers are behind us now,” he says. “For one reason or another we found it tough and we had to put a lot of hard work in. This is totally different, though. Argentina are always going to be one of the favourites.

“We’ve got some fantastic players and we are a great national team that’s always right in there competing for trophies.”

Argentinean supporters will expect their nation to cruise through their group having been drawn alongside Nigeria, South Korea and Greece.

Despite being the heavy favourites to top the group, Messi (10/1 to be World Cup top goalscorer) is taking nothing for granted and believes it will be tough going.

“There are no pushovers in the World Cup. I saw Nigeria at the African Cup of Nations and they are a typical African team with good and physically strong players. We played Côte d’Ivoire in Germany and they [Nigeria] will be a similar proposition,” he added.

“I haven’t seen much of Korea Republic and Greece but to win games, you have to go out and play them. We have confidence in our ability, though, and we feel we can get through the group comfortably enough.”

Messi wants Rooney showdown

Barcelona and Argentina star Lionel Messi (Argentina 13/2 to win the World Cup) has revealed that he wants to go toe to toe with England’s Wayne Rooney in the final of the World Cup.

The World Player of the Year would relish the chance to play the Three Lions key player on the biggest stage.

Messi has had an excellent season with Barca, scoring 47 goals in 53 appearances, and wants to transfer his good form to the international scene.

England are high up on the list of teams the 22-year-old would like to face at this summer’s tournament in South Africa and Rooney is the type of player he wants compete against.

He said: “It would be great to play against Rooney, although I don’t think I would see much of him because we mostly play at opposite ends of the pitch.

“For me, England have a good balance. They look very dangerous when Peter Crouch  plays with Rooney up front. I like Steven Gerrard  and Frank Lampard,  too, but Rooney will be the key.

“It would be good to play against him in South Africa  – preferably in the final, if that is possible,” he added.

Messi is currently preparing for the World Cup with the Argentina squad before their first match of the competition against Nigeria on June 12, the same day England face the USA (England 4/9, draw 3/1, USA 6/1).

The last time Argentina lifted the World Cup trophy was in Mexico in 1986 when they beat England in the quarter-finals thanks to the infamous ‘hand of God’ goal by Diego Maradona.

Messi has been referred to as the next Maradona and will be hoping to beat the English, like his predecessor, if the teams play.

The playmaker has revealed his admiration for the England players and the Premier League.

He said:  “I know there is a lot of history between England and Argentina, but I also know our players admire the English game.

“Mentally they are strong, and they have good quality players. Capello has made them strong, I have seen them play many times on TV and I have been impressed with England.

Messi also believes that Spain, Brazil and Italy all have good chances of winning the final which takes place in Johannesburg on July 11.

Messi Remains Modest Ahead of World Cup

messi arg 300x225 Messi Remains Modest Ahead of World CupThe one thing everybody learned from the 2009/2010 Spanish football is season, and for those who didn’t already know, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is a world class player and probably the best in the world at the moment.

During the height of his form in Barcelona’s league winning season it seemed Messi was scoring a hat-trick every other game as well as some breath taking individual goals.

The comparisons to Maradona began to follow, and in this World Cup year people are going to be expecting a starring role of Messi in South Africa.
Messi (10.00 to be top scorer) scored 47 goals in all competitions in 2009/2010 and even away from the familiar surroundings of the Nou Camp, the man they call “The Flea” could genuinely could win the competition all on his on his own.

But the Argentina star has remained grounded and has said that he is embarrassed by comparisons to World Cup legend and coach Diego Maradona.

The Barcelona player and current FIFA World Player of the Year is often judged by the abilities of Maradona but Messi has said that he finds these comparisons to be “offence”.

The 22-year-old also said that in orders to be considered amongst the greats he still needs to prove himself in a World Cup Finals match.

“I do not like it. I’m embarrassed that I get compared to Diego. It’s an offence [to him]. To be the best player in the world I have to prove it at the World Cup,” Messi is quoted in Sport before adding that he is proud to represent his country.

“I am Argentine and I like to play for my country.”

Argentina are 8.00 to win the World Cup and kick off their campaign against Nigeria on June 12.

How Messi won Barcelona back-to-back La Liga titles

post thumbnail

messi barca football shirt 300x271 How Messi won Barcelona back to back La Liga titlesBarcelona retained the Spanish Primera Liga for a second year in a row after beating Real Valladolid 4-0 at Camp Nou on Sunday evening.

A Bojan strike and a Luis Prieto own goal in the first half plus a brace from Lionel Messi in the second period saw Pep Guardiola’s side clinch all three points in their final game of the season to finish in first position with 99 points.

The defeat for Valladolid condemned them to the second division.

The hosts had to do without Xavi who was suspended and Andres Iniesta was on the bench, meaning that Yaya Toure, Sergio Busquets, and Seydou Keita started in the midfield with Bojan Krkic, Lionel Messi and Pedro making up the attacking trio. Valladolid had Diego and Manucho as their two forwards.

Relegation-battling Valladolid had the better of the opening exchanges of the match, however, from then on Barcelona began to dominate proceedings and began to run the opposition ragged with their quick paced footwork. Keita tried his luck from 25 yards but unfortunately missed the target by only a yard.

GOAL! (finally)

The Barcelona goal, eventually came from an own goal. Pedro worked on the left side and drove the ball from the byline towards the Valladolid six-yard box that Luis Prieto deflected past his own keeper.

Four minutes later the score went to 2-0 to the Catalans as Pedro struck. Messi was the originator of this goal as he placed a fantastic through ball between the legs of Jacobo that Pedro pushed into the Valladolid goal with great ease.

On the 61st minute, Toure stormed past Navas and cut back the ball; Pedro performed a smart dummy to allow Messi to take a shot at the goal from only six yards. The ball went straight into the net, making it 3-0.

Messi grabbed his second goal of the match and 34th goal of season in the 76th minute, the 22-year-old they call ‘the flea’ wriggled his way past two defenders to rocket one into the net.

Next Season…

Barcelona won the game 4-0 to confidently defend the league title. Valladolid finished second from bottom in the standings and as a result have been relegated.
For next season the rumours are that Valencia’s Spanish star David Villa will join as doubts surround the future of Ibrahimovic while Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas, a product of Barca’s youth system, is a long-term target.

Messi & Xavi Offer Barca Straight Forward Win

post thumbnail

messi barca football shirt 300x271 Messi & Xavi Offer Barca Straight Forward WinLeo Messi and Xavi turned in star performances on Saturday night to claim a 4-1 win against Villareal in what looked like being a tricky fixture for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Villareal did indeed pose a threat early on with Brazilian Nilmar missing two great chances after some excellent individual skill but the truth was that Barcelona were simply too good.

As soon as Messi registered the first goal the confidence grew and Villareal were helpless against the individual quality on show in the Barcelona shirt. Xavi scored a magnificent free-kick from 30 yards out to make it 2-0 and put Barcelona on their way to an important three points in the quest for La Liga success.

Now Barcelona must take another step towards winning the league title with what should be a straight forward win at the Nou Camp against relegation threatened Tenerife tonight.

Tenerife earned themselves a life line at the weekend with a 2-1 win at home against fellow relegation fodder Racing Santander. The victory has taken them to just two points behind the three sides immediately above them. They certainly have something to play for when they travel to Camp Nou.

As far as Barcelona are concerned, they will be delighted to be playing a side they have managed to score 13 goals past – without reply – in the last three meetings. Back in October Barcelona routed Tenerife 5-0 with Messi grabbing a hat-trick. A similar score line could be on the cards this time round too.

Back Barcelona to win 4-0 which is available at 7.50

With Messi, Barcelona can snipe la Liga success with victory over Villareal

post thumbnail

lionel messi barcelona1 203x300 With Messi, Barcelona can snipe la Liga success with victory over VillarealJose Mourinho’s victory dance over the Nou Camp pitch on Wednesday night signalled the end of Barcelona’s hopes of Champions League glory and with that the pleasure that would have been taken from lifting aloft the trophy at the home of arch-rivals Real Madrid.

The Catalan giants now only have one title left to play for and all they have to do is win their remaining four games as they currently hold a one point advantage over Real Madrid who are just waiting for a Barcelona slip to leapfrog them to the top of La Liga.

Barcelona will attempt to put the disappointment of Wednesday night behind them when they travel to Villareal on Saturday night. Of the four games Barcelona have left this fixture is one of the trickiest and they will have to be emotionally over their Champions League exit.

Villareal themselves need to produce a sprint to the finishing line if they are to sneak into the top four in a late bid for a Champions League place next season. They are currently 6th in the league just four points behind Real Mallorca who occupy 4th place so they are in with a slim chance.

The Yellow Submarine managed to hold Barca to a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp when the two sides met in January, but they will have to turn in the perfect performance if they are to beat Barcelona at El Madrigal this weekend.

Villareal have only suffered two defeats at home this season, but Barcelona should make it three. Barcelona will punish Villareal with the likes of Messi and Xavi on the counter so back Leo Messi to score first at 3.75 and Barcelona to win 3-1 at 14.00 with PartyBets.com.

Can Messi and Co Turn it Around for Barcelona?

post thumbnail

Lionel Messi Barcelona2 Can Messi and Co Turn it Around for Barcelona?Bayern Munich will await the winner of Wednesday night’s semi-final second-leg between Barcelona (1.42) and Inter Milan (6.50), and whoever makes it through will be salivating at the thought of being the champions-elect in this season’s Champions League.

Many people will consider this match to almost be the final itself such is the likelihood that the side who wins will go on to lift the trophy.
However, we all know not to count our chickens, and neither Pep Guardiola nor the ‘Special One’ will be looking too far into the future ahead of the match of the season so far.

  • Back Messi to score first and Barcelona to win 2-0 available at 13.00 with PartyBets.com.

Both sides rang the changes at the weekend, and both managed to record 3-1 victories as in their respective bids for the league championship. Jose Mourinho made six changes to the team that beat Barcelona, with only captain Javier Zanetti, keeper Julio Cesar, Diego Milito, Welsey Sneijder, and Samuel Eto’o retaining their places.

The victory at the weekend came at a heavy price for Inter, as their star player Welsey Sneijder was forced off with a hamstring injury. The playmaker will probably be given until the last moment to prove his fitness on Wednesday, but it looks likely that the Dutchman will be missing.
However Mourinho, has one of the most talented squads around at his disposal and should be able to cope.

Barcelona will be looking to Messi to produce another magic show like he did against Arsenal a few weeks back. The difference is Inter Milan can defend and Arsenal these days can’t.

This could set up a classic Italian versus Spanish match-up in which Inter may try to absorb pressure from the Catalans and fight their opponents on the counter-attack.

Messi, Ibrahimovic back for Barcelona but Derby Worries Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola 300x200 Messi, Ibrahimovic back for Barcelona but Derby Worries Pep GuardiolaIt’s a real final, a key game at the end of the season and a terribly tough match. With (Espanyol coach Mauricio) Pochettino now in charge, it will be the toughest match we have had.” – Pep Guardiola.

Barcelona (1.30) travel to city rivals Espanyol (9.00) on Saturday evening and it may be somewhat surprising that Barca coach Pep Guardiola has chosen to classify this match with such importance considering the opposition are 13 places lower in La Liga and 46 points separate them.

Barcelona have been unstoppable in recent seasons with Europe’s biggest and best teams failing to stop them so a lowly Espanyol outfit look pretty unlikely to be able to halt Barcelona’s charge for the Primera Division.

However this is a city derby and it is well known that the form book goes out of the window in the blood and thunder of a local derby. Espanyol can take some confidence from recent matches against Barca to give them hope of an upset their last four encounters at home with Barcelona read W1 D2 L1.

Head-to-head

  • Barca have only managed to win three while losing two and drawing the other four.
  • Espanyol were the only team to win at the Nou Camp in La Liga last season when Barcelona were still hunting the title.

You can bet on now Barcelona (1.30)v  Espanyol (9.00) now

On the team news front, the home side will be without their number one keeper Carlos Kameni as he serves a ban after being sent off in Wednesday’s 3-1 defeat to Racing Santander.

Barcelona will be without Eric Abidal and Andres Iniesta but Zlatan Ibrahimovic is expected to be on the bench. The news has been full of plaudits for Lionel Messi in the last few weeks after a string of stellar performances and goals, but it is now midfielder Xavi who is putting in the world class performances too and he is 9.00 to get the first goal in this match.

Guardiola will not allow his troops to slip up in this potential banana skin game and the quality of Messi et al will ensure another Barcelona victory. Back a 3-1 win for Barcelona which is available at 11.00 with PartyBets.com.
