Reds narrow manager search

Liverpool’s search for a new manager is continuing but the club’s owners, Fenway Sports Group, appear closer than ever to an appointment with Louis van Gaal (6/1 – Next Permanent Liverpool manager) and Roberto Martinez (6/5f) the two main men in the frame.

The Reds sacked club legend Kenny Dalglish last week following a disappointing Premier League campaign and immediately begun an exhaustive search for a new man.

Brendan Rodgers, Jurgen Klopp, Frank De Boer and, in the past 24 hours, Andre Villas-Boas (4/1) have all apparently been ruled out of the equation for a job that might look attractive but has so far failed to generate too much concrete interest.

Liverpool have been given permission to speak to Wigan boss Martinez but his current holiday has so far prevented the Spaniard from having an official interview, although that is likely to be forthcoming next week upon his return.

Latics owner Dave Whelan has said he wants a resolution to the situation within a week of his manager’s return on Tuesday and insists it is not a foregone conclusion Martinez will depart, amid ongoing interest from Aston Villa as well.

However, the former Swansea boss seems a good fit for Anfield, despite lukewarm appreciation of his talents from the Liverpool fans so far. He satisfies FSG’s edict of a young, hungry coach capable of building a lasting legacy and his attacking, attractive footballing philosophy is apparently exactly what John W Henry and co are after.

He has yet to be tested at a big club, though, and that remains the big risk in appointing the still relatively inexperienced 38-year-old. There is also a nagging fear that his impressive reputation may have been cultivated by a talkative Whelan, keen to ensure he secures a decent compensation figure when he does depart the DW when, in reality, he has struggled with relegation in consecutive seasons at Wigan.

So, while Martinez remains the clear favourite, perhaps the smart money should be on former Ajax, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Holland boss van Gaal getting the job.

If you believe the reports, Liverpool want him on board in a new Director of Football role but the 60-year-old is thought to be keen to take the manager’s job himself.

His CV is certainly impressive; winning the Dutch league three times with Ajax and once with AZ, the Spanish title twice while at Barca and the German Bundesliga once at Bayern. He also won the Champions League when in his native Holland in 1995 and has several domestic cups to his extensive honours list.

He is clearly a winner and has the credentials and also favours an attacking style of football, but his age may go against him in the final reckoning and the Director of Football position might not appeal if he wants the top job.

Outsiders at this stage include Rodgers (7/1), former Barcelona boss Frank Rijkaard (12/1) and ex-Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez (16/1), who, despite holding plenty of fans’ support, is nowhere near even being considered it seems.

FSG are edging closer to an appointment, then, but it could still take a couple of weeks before the new man, charged with no less than getting the Reds back into top four next term, is known.

Arsenal in search of a miracle

Arsenal know they need a footballing miracle if they are to turn around a 4-0 deficit against AC Milan in the second leg of their Champions League knock-out tie at the Emirates on Tuesday (Arsenal 11/10, draw 5/2, AC Milan 5/2 – 90 Minute).

Brave punters can get odds of 25/1 for Arsenal to qualify after their first leg mauling at the San Siro last month. The Gunners were roundly criticised for their display in Italy, which saw goals from Kevin-Prince Boateng, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and a brace from Robinho inflict Arsenal’s heaviest ever defeat in European competition (AC Milan – 10/1 Champions League Outright).

With Arsene Wenger’s men following up that game with a limp display against Sunderland in the FA Cup, their hopes of silverware are all but dashed before the start of spring – yet again.

However, despite their woes in cup competitions the Gunners’ Premier League form has actually improved, with boss Arsene Wenger picking up the Manager of the Month Award for February after three wins from three during the month, including a 5-2 demolition of local rivals Spurs.

They then began March with a narrow 2-1 victory against Liverpool at Anfield, meaning they now hold a crucial three-point advantage over fifth-placed Chelsea in the race for a Champions League spot (Arsenal 4/7 – Top-Four Finish).

Robin van Persie grabbed his 30th and 31st goals of the campaign so far at Anfield on Saturday and now has 10 in 11 games across all competitions. The generous odds of 4/1 for the flying Dutchman to score first therefore are too good to be overlooked.

This upturn in form may have come too late to save their Champion League chances this term but it perhaps needs to be noted that they have scored 12 goals in successive home league games, and six of their last 19 home wins in Europe have been won by four or more goals.

A four-goal deficit has never been overturned in the Champions League, though Milan did concede a 4-1 first leg lead when they lost 4-0 to Deportivo La Coruna in the quarter-finals back in 2004.

But while Arsenal will steam forward with the intent to fire themselves back into the tie they have to be mindful that one slip at the back and the tie will be finished off for good. And with the attacking quartet of Robinho, Antonio Nocerino, Boateng and Ibrahimovic all set to start for the Rossoneri, it is hard to see Arsenal keeping a clean sheet.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men are unbeaten in their last five games and are now five points clear at the top of Serie A following last weekend’s 4-0 win against Palermo. After four successive defeats at this stage of the competition, the Serie A giants will not want to let their advantage slip this time around.

With the amount of quality permeating the Milan ranks Arsenal have simply given themselves too much to do in order to qualify. However, a determination to go down fighting and build on their promising league form should ensure goals – but sadly for Arsenal fans they will come at both ends.

A 2-1 Arsenal victory is the pick, priced at 7/1, while a van Persie 2-1 scorecast is priced at 22/1.

Ferguson foiled in search

Manchester United supporters are likely to take a dim view of Sir Alex Ferguson’s admission that the “type” of world-class midfielder needed to fill the void created by Paul Scholes is “not available” (Man United 7/4 – Premier League 2011/12 Outright).

It means United will set off in pursuit of a record 20th domestic title without one of Luka Modric and Samir Nasri of Tottenham and Arsenal respectively, as well as top summer target Wesley Sneijder from Internazionale (West Brom 9/2, draw 11/4, Man United 1/2 – match prices).

The news will disappoint the match-going Stretford End faithful desperate to be moved out of their seats akin to when a flash and young Cristiano Ronaldo first lit up Old Trafford on his debut against Bolton close to a decade ago.

It will also mean United will almost certainly be caught short when it comes to closing the gap on Barcelona at Europe’s top table (Barcelona 2/1 – Champions League 2011/12 Outright).

Ferguson explained: “We lost five players in their 30s this summer. That helped finance the three younger players – Ashley Young, Phil Jones and David de Gea – I have brought to the club.”

He added: “At this moment, I can’t see another addition. The type of player we might have been looking for is not available. I am happy with the players I have got at this moment in time.”

United were humbled by the all-conquering Catalans for the second time in three seasons in May in the final of Europe’s elite club competition. It was a one-sided game in which Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs, Antonio Valencia and Ji-Sung Park were cruelly exposed.

How Ferguson would have loved for Scholes at his peak to have squared up against Camp Nou maestro Xavi – and it is the gap he leaves which is certain to cause the game’s longest-serving manager his biggest headache.

Players of Scholes’ undisputed class are once-in-a-generation types, which makes the fact that Ferguson is now likely to close the purse strings – with options available – all the more frustrating.

Modric, Nasri and Sneijder are all game-breakers with the rare talent of controlling matches at the highest level in a role which Scholes mastered with distinction.

All three would surely have surely flourished at the peak of their careers under Ferguson’s stewardship, in the same way Eric Cantona needed a stage to showcase his talents.

The Scot has made no secret of his frustration that United have not won more Champions League trophies – and without a creative lynchpin, the wait could go on.

Rafa walks alone as search begins

Liverpool have begun the search for a manager they hope will help them challenge for the Premier League title (10/1 to win) next season after confirming Rafa Benitez has left Anfield.

The Spaniard has finally paid the price for last season’s dismal campaign and after the two parties agreed a severance package earlier today, he was sent on his merry way.

Rumours over the future of Benitez have been rumbling on for the last few months but it only broke late on Wednesday night that he could be heading for the exit door.

The 50-year-old says it is with regret that he leaves Anfield after six years at the helm but he will have no problem getting fixed up elsewhere, with Inter Milan keen to land him.

“It is very sad for me to announce that I will no longer be manager of Liverpool FC,” Benitez revealed. “I would like to thank all of the staff and players for their efforts. I’ll always keep in my heart the good times I’ve had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool.

“I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager. Thank you so much once more and always remember: You’ll never walk alone.”

Benitez will always be remembered for winning a fifth European Cup but it is ultimately his failure to bring the Premier League title to Anfield that has cost him.

Last season’s seventh place finish, coupled with an early exit from the Champions League, did not help matters and with clubs abroad showing an interest, the two parties have come to a mutual agreement to end Benitez’s tenure.

The race is now on to find his successor with Kenny Dalglish (5/2f to be next Liverpool manager) and Martin O’Neill (5/2f) the early frontrunners, while Roy Hodgson (7/2) and Guus Hiddink (10/1) have also been mentioned.

It would have been interesting to see if Jose Mourinho would have fancied it but he has just taken over at Real Madrid and is out of the running.

Despite Liverpool’s struggles on and off the pitch over the last couple of seasons it is still arguably one of the biggest jobs in world football and there will be no shortage of top names declaring an interest.
