Foxes can extend unbeaten run

There are nine Championship games taking place on Tuesday, which will have a big impact on both ends of the table. Here’s our treble selection, which is headed by resurgent Leicester as they seek to step up their promotion bid (Championship – totesport).

Leicester v Blackpool

Nigel Pearson already appears to be weaving his magic at the King Power Stadium, with the Foxes unbeaten in their first two games of his second stint in charge. Leicester started his second reign as manager with a crushing win over Crystal Palace and followed that up with a useful draw at Portsmouth at the weekend.

Despite a disappointing start to the campaign, the Foxes are still just one point outside the play-offs and with more spending power in January, will almost certainly mount a promotion challenge.

A win on Tuesday will see Leiceser leapfrog their opponents in the table, but Blackpool will pose a threat to the home side. Ian Holloway’s men have scored ten goals in their last four matches, but have also been conceding plenty and will struggle to cope with the Foxes’ firepower.

Suggested Bet: Draw HT / Leicester FT – 7/2

Derby v Brighton

Two teams who have struggled in recent weeks, go head-to-head at Pride Park and don’t be surprised if honours are even.

Four places and two points separate the Rams and the Seagulls, who look likely to fall short of a place in the top six.

After a fine start, Derby have lost their last four league games and have slipped into the bottom half of the table. Nigel Clough will be worried with their form in front of goal, especially at home, where they have drawn a blank in their last two matches.

Brighton did collect a win over struggling Coventry at the weekend, but they haven’t won away from home since early September – a 1-0 success at Bristol City. Goals have been a concern for Gus Poyet, with no Brighton striker scoring in the last two months.

Suggested Bet: Draw @ 12/5

Watford v Bristol City

The in-form side in the division are in action at Vicarage Road and surely it’s just a matter of time before Bristol City are out of the bottom three. It could happen in midweek, if they can defeat Watford and maintain their recent impressive run.

Derek McIness has inspired the Robins to five wins and a draw in their last five games, including an outstanding win over league leaders Southampton on Saturday. Nicky Maynard has scored three goals in the last two games and McIness will struggle to keep hold of his star striker.

Watford themselves have picked up in recent times, with the Hornets losing just once in their last five matches. They are often a tough nut to crack at home, but this season they have lost four of their nine matches at Vicarage Road.

Suggested Bet: Maynard to score at anytime @ 3/2

Pearce’s men seek unbeaten run

England Under-21’s are in UEFA Euro 2013 Group 8 qualifying action on Thursday night (England 2/13, draw 5/1, Iceland 11/1 – Match Betting), as they look to continue their 100% record against Iceland at Weston Homes Community Stadium.

Stuart Pearce’s side recorded a 3-0 win in Reykjavik a month ago thanks to a hat-trick from Arsenal star Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is set to be named in the starting XI again, as he looks to prove he is worthy of the £12 million Arsene Wenger spent on him.

The England Under-21 boss sees a similar situation with Oxlade-Chamberlain (9/2 First Goalscorer) that was experienced by his Arsenal team-mate Theo Walcott, and believes the 18-year-old can get “better and better” and will improve from every 90 minutes he can get under his belt.

Pearce has been forced to make a number of changes to his squad due to injury and that means six of the 24 faces in the squad are part of the Under-21 set-up for the first time.

Ryan Bennett from Peterborough, Newcastle United forward Sammy Ameobi and Manchester United’s Will Keane were called up on Monday, but Bennett reported with an injury and was sent home while Fulham full-back Matthew Briggs also missed out through injury.

The boss’ plans were further disrupted by the fact Liverpool’s Jon Flanagan and Everton’s Ross Barkley left the camp to join up with Noel Blake’s England Under-19 squad for their game with Denmark, also on Thursday night.

Both those two will be unavailable to face Iceland but will be ready for the trip to face Belgium on Monday night, where Pearce will be looking for another impressive display to boost their progression towards Israel 2013.

Nathan Delfouneso (7/2 First Goalscorer) has enjoyed a mixed time against Iceland so far in 2011, as he scored in Preston against them back in March before being taken off in Reykjavik last month with a hamstring injury.

The Aston Villa man is by far the most experienced forward available to Pearce, so will lead the line with Ameobi, Keane and Marvin Sordell of Watford all fighting to join him.

There is a lack of real Premier League experience throughout the squad and the likes of Jordan Henderson, Josh McEachran and Martin Kelly will have to shoulder a lot of the responsibility.

As for Iceland, they have won one game so far in Euro 2013 qualifying and that was thanks to two goals from Lillestrom striker Björn Sigurdarson, to see of Belgium in September. They are the only two goals they have scored in three games and Iceland should not pose too much threat to England.

Despite the limited experience, there remains a lot of exciting young potential throughout the team and they should have enough to beat Iceland with ease, to set them up for the trip to face Belgium in their final game of 2011.

Toon to extend unbeaten record

Bet on the Premier LeagueNewcastle United travel to QPR for the Monday night fixture and expect them to extend their unbeaten record against the newly promoted Londoners (QPR 11/8, draw 23/10, Newcastle 21/10 – Match Betting).

Toon boss Alan Pardew will be delighted with his side’s start in the league despite not managing to land any big name signings before the transfer window closed.

They come into the game on the back of a 2-1 victory over Fulham at St James’ Park and have been good value for the points they have picked up so far.

Their most impressive performance this season came against North-East rivals Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby. They continued their fine record in the fixture despite going into the game as underdogs, winning 1-0 at The Stadium of Light.

Davide Santon is set to make his debut for the Toon at Loftus Road. The Italian full-back has played seven times for his country and was once regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the world. The 20-year-old now has the opportunity to express his talents in the Premier League in Newcastle colours. It could turn out to be a real scoop for Pardew who signed the player on a five-year contract.

Leon Best has got off to a flyer this season and the in-form striker should be backed to score the first goal at 6/1. The 24-year-old looked a real threat against Fulham and added two goals to his account on that afternoon. Best is blooming with the quality of service he has received so far and can be trusted to continue his rich vein of form.

The last time Newcastle won at Loftus Road was with a 3-2 victory and the same result is a good bet at 28/1 to occur again. Both sides are capable of scoring goals as neither have particularly strong defences. There has also never been a league game between these two sides that has finished goalless and it would come as a complete surprise if it were to happen this time around.

Neil Warnock is likely to hand a debut to Joey Barton against his old club as well as starts for Shaun Wright-Phillips and Luke Young. Rangers were busy in the transfer window, bringing in half a dozen new players, and it may just take a while for them to gel as a team.

Their start to the Premier League season has been hit and miss. They have had just one win although it was an impressive 1-0 success at Goodison Park against Everton. However, they were well beaten in their opening game against Bolton (0-4) and at Wigan they were very much second best in a 2-0 defeat.

The hosts have yet to prove themselves in the top flight this season and are still one of the teams tipped to be relegated to the Championship at the end of the season.
