Hoops to claim vital win

The weekend’s Premier League action climaxes on Monday with a London derby between Queens Park Rangers and West Ham (Match Betting – QPR 11/10, draw 12/5, West Ham 11/4).

After previously being stalwarts of the top flight in years gone by, the two sides haven’t met since 2004 and you can be certain that both teams will be desperate to get one over on their local rivals.

After making eleven new signings in the summer QPR have struggled to gel, taking just two points from their opening five league games, and are now bottom of the table following Reading’s draw on Saturday.

Furthermore they’re currently in the midst of somewhat of an injury crisis, most notably in defence, where three of their first-choice back four are currently out of action.

However, they do have plenty of talent in both midfield and attack and the return of Alejandro Faurlin has undoubtedly made a massive difference to the side.

However, it’s former Hammer Bobby Zamora (11/8 to score at anytime) who is most likely to be their key man on Monday and he’ll be desperate to prove he can still mix it in the Premier League, after a largely disappointing time since moving to Loftus Road in January.

With West Ham struggling to defend crosses this season, Zamora will fancy himself to get on the scoresheet for what would be his fifth goal of the season.

In contrast to their rivals, Sam Allardyce’s men have made a solid start to their return to the top flight, taking eight points from their first five matches to leave them tenth.

However, after a fairly straightforward start to the campaign this is one of their last easy games before they meet some of the big boys and they will be targeting three points on Monday.

One of their problems this season has been scoring goals, an issue that has been magnified by the injury to Andy Carroll and, with Carlton Cole looking out of form so far this term, even more responsibility has fallen on captain Kevin Nolan (5/2 to score at anytime).

Despite not being a favourite amongst the fans, the veteran is always reliable when the Hammers need a goal – a quality that more than makes up for his lack of mobility. His ability to drift into the box can often prove priceless and he’ll be looking to catch the makeshift Hoops backline napping.

But, with so much quality going forward its surely only a matter of time before the QPR find their feet and they could just sneak this one (QPR 8/1 to win 2-1).

Wolves hungry for vital win

Sunday throws up potentially the first ’six-pointer’ of the Premier League season as Wolves welcome Sunderland to Molineux. Both teams are in rotten runs of form and are in desperate need for three points. Elsewhere, Everton will be hoping Stoke have another European hangover when they head to Goodison Park for what should be a physical encounter.

Everton v Stoke City 3pm

The afternoon kicks off with Everton, who have won the last two, taking on the travel-sick Stoke. The Potters were dealt a rotten hand when it came to fixtures after Europa League matches, being forced to play away after all six of their group stage contests. So far, after European matches, its four games and four defeats, going down 5-0 at Bolton in their last away fixture.

Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Dynamo Kiev was a hard fought encounter and is likely to have taken something out of Tony Pulis’s men. With that in mind it is no surprise Everton are installed as 8/11 favourites for the win in the match betting, with Stoke at 9/2 and the draw at 5/2.

Stoke did stop the league rot with a win over Blackburn last weekend but Everton are seemingly a team on the up after a horrible run of fixtures. David Moyes’s team look like they are beginning to build a bit of momentum and, with the exception of next week’s trip to Arsenal, will view the next five fixtures as very winnable. The Toffees have been boosted the news Phil Neville, Sylvain Distin and Jack Rodwell could be fit for the clash – the latter having been in good form since his impressive run out with England.

The game is unlikely to be one for the purists or feature a boat-load of goals, but that should suit Everton as they look to pick up a third win on the bounce.

Wolves v Sunderland 4pm

The late kick-off on Sunday is arguably the most intriguing fixture of the day given what has happened at the Stadium of Light this week. Sunderland fans have suffered a torrid 2011 and finally lost patience with Steve Bruce last Saturday following the defeat to Wigan. Black Cats owner Ellis Short has heard their cries and Martin O’Neill looks set to takeover on Wearside in the not too distant future. The new man could be there on Sunday to see what his new team are made of as they look to get a positive result from the trip to Molineux.

Wolves have picked up four points from their last two at home and have a habit of picking up the points when they need to. Having won just one of their last 11, the pressure is on Wolves to take the three points and they’ll view Sunderland as the perfect opponents. The Black Cats have won twice all season and look a team in desperate need of a confidence boost. The news that O’Neill is on his way will help but it might not save them on Sunday.

Sunderland have lost on their last three visits to Wolves and, with the home side welcoming back Stephen Hunt and Jamie O’Hara, it looks like they could return to the north-east empty handed once more. Wolves are 11/8 in the match betting, with the draw 23/10 and Sunderland 21/10.

‘Amazing’ Bale vital for Spurs

Spurs managed to secure a famous Champions League victory over reigning champions Inter Milan at White Hart Lane last night and boss Harry Redknapp was quick to praise the performance of one of his players in particular – Gareth Bale (Spurs 5/6 to win Champions League Group A).

Two weeks ago the north London club suffered a 4-3 defeat at the San Siro, after Inter had raced into a 4-0 first-half lead.

A second-half hat-trick from Bale did nothing for Spurs other than claw back a bit of pride but the talented left-footer was crucial for Spurs on Tuesday night as they avenged their defeat in Italy (Spurs 25/1 to win the Champions League).

Bale did not find the net himself at White Hart Lane, but the youngster turned provider for both Peter Crouch and Roman Pavlyuchenko, as Spurs enjoyed a European night to savour.

Redknapp hailed Bale as “amazing” and claimed the 21-year-old has “everything”.

“Maicon is rated as the best right-back in the world and what he’s done to him in the two games is amazing,” explained the Spurs boss.

“He can cross, his left foot is great on the run, he can shoot, dribble, head it, he’s got everything.”

Spurs may be enjoying life in Europe’s top competition, but if the north London side want to compete in the Champions League next season they will need to finish in the Premier League’s top four.

Spurs are currently fifth in the league, two points behind fourth-placed Manchester City, and remain in contention to finish in the top four for a second successive season.

Chelsea are currently 1/200 with totesport.com to finish in the top four and after the reigning champions’ fine start to the season  – they’re already 10 points clear of Spurs – few would suggest the Stamford Bridge side could fail to land a Champions League spot.

The form of Manchester United has been questioned by many but Sir Alex Ferguson’s men remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier League.

United’s star man Wayne Rooney has failed to hit the heights he achieved last season and is currently injured, but the Old Trafford side have still managed to grind out results and you get the feeling that when they do find top form, and when Rooney is firing on all cylinders, they will mount a serious title threat.

United are 1/14 to finish in the top four and, although not completely out of the question, it seems safe to suggest Old Trafford will be hosting Champions League football next season.

Arsenal and Manchester City complete the top four at present (Arsenal 1/7, City 2/5 to secure a top-four finish) and given the Gunners’ Champions League pedigree and current form, a top-four finish appears to be on the cards for the Emirates side.

The most likely scenario is that Spurs will again battle with City for the right to appear in Europe’s premier tournament next season.

The London club won the battle last time out but City, once again, spent some serious money in the summer transfer window.

Eastlands boss Roberto Mancini is under pressure to deliver a top-four finish, at the very least, and Spurs will face a serious battle to secure the final Champions League spot.

However, with the talented midfield Redknapp has at his disposal, at 5/2 Spurs appear good value to land a Premier League top-four finish.

Rafael van der Vaart arrived in a last-minute deal from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day and the Dutchman has managed to adapt quickly to life in England.

Luka Modric and Aaron Lennon have also produced impressive displays but it could well b Bale who provides the ingenuity and guile to secure a second successive season in the Champions League for Spurs.
