Hazard warning for Hodgson

Saturday represents Roy Hodgson’s last chance to have a look at his squad in action as England take on Belgium at Wembley before the real business starts at Euro 2012 in a week’s time.

It has not necessarily been the easiest of weeks for the England manager as he has had little time to prepare for Euro 2012 to start with, and has been forced to cope with the losses of John Ruddy, Gareth Barry and now Frank Lampard from his original squad.

Jack Butland, Phil Jagielka and Jordan Henderson are the beneficiaries of those injuries but the squad has obviously been weakened – and there will be those who are thinking Henderson would have done well to get into any other squad at the tournament, let alone the fourth favourites.

There is an underwhelming feeling for many punters going into the tournament regarding England, perhaps more of dread than anticipation, but at least the players will not be burdened by over-the-top expectations that usually accompany them in major tournaments – and which they usually fail to live up to.

Not many will be tempted by the 10/1 about England to lift their first European Championship title but things may look different following the weekend’s fixture.

Belgium obviously failed to get into the Poland and Ukraine showpiece but were given a tough assignment having been drawn in the same group as Germany and Turkey – and ultimately finished behind both, with a 1-1 home draw with the latter proving costly.

However, they are a nation that is seemingly on the up given the success of some of their stars in the Premier League and they could perhaps upset the odds on Saturday (England 8/13, draw 11/4, Belgium 5/1 – Match Betting).

Vincent Kompany has been an absolute rock at the heart of Manchester City’s defence as he led the Citizens to their first league title since 1968, while Thomas Vermaelen at Arsenal, Everton’s Marouane Fellaini and Fulham’s Moussa Dembele have also impressed this season in England’s top flight.

Perhaps more excitingly for spectators is a first glimpse of wonderkid Eden Hazard who, after a number of impressive seasons in France, is seemingly set to move to Chelsea at some point in the summer, having also been courted by Manchester United and Manchester City.

The 21-year-old finished off the season at Lille with a hat-trick and might well tempt those looking to invest in the First/Last Goalscorer markets at a price of 12/1, while he is 10/3 to score at anytime.

Romelu Lukaku (10/1 and 11/4) was not given much of a chance at Stamford Bridge this season but is very much one for the future and this appears to be a Belgium team that is definitely improving.

As it is a friendly it would be prudent to wait until team news is announced closer to kick off to get a better idea of the chances of either side but Belgium should be more relaxed as they have nothing else to worry about.

England’s midfield appears to be a problem following the withdrawals of Lampard and Barry, as Scott Parker has also been struggling with an injury and may well be rested on Saturday to keep him as fit as possible for the real business.

That means Henderson could well get a start in midfield or Hodgson could re-employ Phil Jones but it looks to be an area where England may struggle.

No doubt Hodgson will try and involve as many players as possible given that it is the final time he will see any in meaningful action, while it is also only his second game in charge.

The former West Brom boss at least got off to a winning if unspectacular start and he will be hoping for more of the same to give the squad a boost going into the France game on June 11.

He will try to make his side hard to beat rather than an offensive powerhouse but who can blame him – you cannot make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.

Lennon issues Celtic warning

Celtic may well be on an impressive run of form in the Scottish Premier League this season but manager Neil Lennon has urged his players to avoid complacency when they make the trip to Hearts on Wednesday (Hearts 4/1, draw 5/2, Celtic 8/11 – Match Betting).

The Hoops have worked wonders in recent months as they managed to overturn Rangers’ (10/3 – SPL Outright) 15-point lead at the top of the table to go top of the pile, with four points being the difference if they can win at Tynecastle.

It’s the level of consistency that has been so impressive for Celtic after a slow start to the campaign, as they have dominated most sides from start to finish in recent weeks.

Gary Hooper (10/3 – First Goalscorer) has been the star striker for Celtic since his move from Scunthorpe United, however he has been backed up by decent performances from Georgios Samaras and Anthony Stokes.

Goals have not been hard to come by for Hooper and Stokes, who have 33 goals between them in all competitions this term, and Hearts will be fully aware of the duo.

It has not only been in the attacking areas of the field where Celtic (1/5 – SPL Outright) have looked strong, as the Old Firm side have only conceded two goals in their last five outings, which will be a worrying sign for a Hearts side who have been making headline for the wrong reasons this week.

The Edinburgh outfit continue to struggle with financial restraints off the field, with players reportedly not being paid on time and now a fresh court case against them from the Inland Revenue for alleged unpaid tax.

Considering their monetary woes, the Hearts players should take great credit for their performances on the field, as they currently sit in fourth place in the SPL table.

The Jambos find themselves six points off Motherwell and will be keen to close down the gap on the Steelmen before their trip to St Mirren on Saturday.

Hearts head into this match following a 1-1 draw with St Johnstone, in what was a frustrating afternoon for manager Paulo Sergio, who saw his side have a man advantage for the final 15 minutes of the game.

One bright spark for Hearts was the 23-year-old David Templeton scoring the opening goal of the game against the Perth club. The attacking midfielder is highly rated and Celtic will have to be aware of the threat he will pose on Wednesday night.

Czech midfielder Rudi Skacel (15/2 – First Goalscorer) is currently the club’s leading goalscorer this term with nine and he will also be looking to find a way through that sturdy Celtic defence.

Considering their form the Hoops are firm favourites to win Wednesday’s encounter at Tyncastle and it’s hard to see them not coming away with the three points.

Hearts have struggled for goals so a clean sheet for Celtic would not be surprising, as they look to extend their lead at the top of the table and go a step close to claiming the SPL title.

Messi fires warning to rivals

Lionel Messi has warned his opponents that there is more to come as he and his Barcelona team prepare to tackle Athletic Bilbao on Sunday. The champions are unbeaten in their four away games to date in La Liga, but two wins and two draws have seen them slip behind Real Madrid.

The little Argentine blew away rumours that he was in crisis with successive hat tricks against Real Mallorca last weekend and against Viktoria Plzen in the Champions League in midweek – Messi is 6/1 to score another hat-trick on Sunday.

The striker now has 22 goals in 17 games this season and surpassed 200 on Wednesday to become Barca’s second all-time goal scorer. He now has an incredible 202 goals in just 286 appearances and is understandably 2/1 favourite to score first at San Mames.

Despite his latest accolade the 24-year-old has already switched his attentions to Bilbao, with Barca a point behind Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga – keen to improve on some unconvincing away form.

Indeed Pep Guardiola’s men could begin the game four points behind their great rivals, with Real tackling Osasuna earlier in the day (Match Betting –R Madrid 1/12, draw 9/1, Osasuna 20/1).

“The most important thing is to win the three points this weekend because it’s a very difficult stadium to win at,” said Messi. “They are a great team, they study their rivals in depth, and they aren’t afraid to take the game to you.

“I’m not aiming to break the record this year. I hope to do it someday seeing that I want to stay here for the rest of my career. I feel great physically, strong enough to play as many games as possible, like last year.”

Messi and his team-mates travel to the Basque country (Match Betting – Athletic 10/1, draw 9/2, Barcelona 1/4) to play an Athletic side, who have recovered from a poor start to the season.

Marcelo Bielsa’s men are unbeaten in nine games across all competitions and have risen to ninth in the La Liga standings.

Bielsa will hope that star striker Fernando Llorente will be fit enough to last the 90 minutes. The striker has been struggling with a knee injury in recent weeks but showed why he is so important for Los Leones with two goals in their last league game at San Mames against Atletico Madrid 10 days ago (Llorente 10/1 to score first).

Scoring will be a whole lot tougher on Sunday though as they become the latest club to try and beat Victor Valdes, who broke a club record in midweek by going 787 minutes without conceding a goal stretching back to mid-September. It is no surprise then that Barca are at 8/11 to keep yet another clean sheet.

The Catalan giants have also comfortably outscored their opponents this season, scoring 32 goals to Athletic’s 15, suggesting any goal-fest could be distinctly one sided – a 4-0 Barcelona victory is 11/1.

Don’t expect Bilbao to sit back and try and contain their illustrious opponents though, striker Oscar de Marcos insists his side will go out for the win.

“We have had a very good run recently,” the striker told Sport.”We know that to beat Barca is very difficult, but we will try to get the three points. We will not go for the draw, we will do our best and enjoy the game.”

Toure fires Chelsea warning

Kolo Toure believes Manchester City (12/1 to win 2010-11 Premier League title) are capable of ending Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season and feels stopping Didier Drogba is the key.

City are up to fourth in the Premier League following their win at Wigan last weekend – seven points behind Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

The defending champions have made a faultless start to the season, with five wins out of five, but they face their toughest test yet as they travel to Eastlands on Saturday (Man City 21/10, Draw 9/4, Chelsea 6/5 – Match Betting).

City (4/6 Top Four Finish) beat Chelsea home and away last season and Toure admits confidence is high that they can claim the three points again this weekend.

The former Arsenal man said: “We need to make sure we take something from it. If we can get one point that would be great, but if we can get all three like we did twice last season, that would be fantastic.”

Toure has revealed that Roberto Mancini has had his squad working hard in training on the defensive side of the game, which looks to be paying dividends.

City have conceded just two goals in their opening five matches and will need to be at their best again to keep the free-scoring Chelsea at bay.

Toure has pinpointed Ivory Coast team-mate Drogba (6/4f to be 2010-11 Premier League Top Scorer) as the main danger for Mancini?s men and feels the Chelsea striker has been better than ever this season.

The centre-back added: “It seems like he’s getting better with age because he’s such an intelligent player. He’s had to change his game. He knows he needs more help from his team-mates now.”

“I know his game well, but he’s still difficult to play against because he’s so powerful,” he said. “He’s playing so well and with all these assists, he seems to have improved his style of playing.

“At the moment, I’d say he’s on fire. So we’re going to have to defend really well as a team to stop him. We’re going to have to be really strong on Saturday.”

Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini has played down suggestions of a bust-up with Emmanuel Adebayor.

There have been suggestions that the City boss had a row with Adebayor regarding the striker’s current injury – with a dead leg seeing him miss the last three games.

Mancini says the former Arsenal striker trained with the squad on Monday and could come into contention for the visit of the league leaders (Both Teams To Score – 5/6).

Casillas issues Mourinho warning

Spain captain Iker Casillas has told Portugal that his Real Madrid boss, Jose Mourinho, is too busy to resurrect their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign (Real Madrid 11/10 – La Liga Outright).

Reports this week have claimed the Portuguese Football Federation want the former Chelsea and Inter Milan manager to take over on a temporary basis after the sacking of Carlos Queiroz.

Queiroz was dismissed last week after being handed a six-month suspension for insulting anti-doping officials ahead of the World Cup.

Prior to that, he had presided over a home draw with Cyprus and a defeat in Norway in Group H to dent Portugal’s hopes of making it to Ukraine and Poland.

Portugal face Denmark at home and Iceland away next month and speculation had suggested the FPF would turn to the self-proclaimed ?Special One? on a two-game basis.

However, Casillas, who led all-conquering Spain at the World Cup in the summer, says Mourinho does not have the time to devote to his country?s cause.

He said: “I think it would give him too much. I am sure he would like to coach Portugal but his head only thinks of Madrid.

“I don’t think he will go. I have talked to him and his mind is set on Madrid.”

Mourinho himself admits the idea could be a non-starter although he has not completely ruled the proposition out completely.

Speaking ahead of Real Madrid’s trip to Real Sociedad this weekend (Sociedad 6/1, draw  16/5, Madrid 4/11), he told a press conference:  “If it were not for Real Madrid I would do it for free.

“But if you ask me right now if I can go, I think not. I have a contract with Real Madrid. I do not say no, but in the natural way of things, I do not think this is the time.”

Mourinho added: “Real Madrid have every right in the world to put an obstacle in the way.

“And if you put the slightest obstacle there, I can’t go.

“To say no to Portugal is impossible because of my personal pride and my passion for Portugal, but at the moment I cannot say yes.”

Cole fires City warning

Liverpool star Joe Cole misses a penaltyJoe Cole has warned Manchester City that Liverpool will head to Eastlands on Monday full of confidence following their unbeaten start to the season (Liverpool 2/1 to win on Monday – match market).

The Reds have so far won three Europa League qualifying games and almost beat Arsenal with 10 men last weekend only for a freak own goal by goalkeeper Jose Reina to give the Gunners a 1-1 draw at Anfield.

Cole has personally endured a somewhat difficult start to his Liverpool career – getting sent off against Arsenal and then missing a penalty on Thursday in the 1-0 win over Trabzonspor – but he says Roy Hodgson’s side are in good shape and will take on big-spending City in fine fettle (Liverpool to win 3-1 – 25/1).

The England man, who is suspended for Monday night’s clash, said: “I’ll be cheering the lads on and I think we’ll do a good job.

“We are ready, we are getting stronger.

“It’s been a disjointed pre-season but we are getting fitter and fitter. The players are looking better every day.

“We are going there full of confidence after holding Arsenal to a draw.”

Ancelotti warning for champions

Chelsea (13/8 to win the Premier League) boss Carlo Ancelotti says the Premier League could be a five-horse race, and that the Blues will have to be better than last season to finish top of the pile again.

Ancelotti starts the new season with a home date against West Brom (Chelsea 1/7 to win) – and there is plenty to live up to after guiding Chelsea to the double last term.

The Italian insists that it will not be a straight fight with Manchester United at the top this year, and points to Liverpool’s potential under new manager Roy Hodgson as well as Manchester City’s big-budget squad as potential challengers.

“It will be more difficult to win the title this year,” Ancelotti told the Press Association.

“It is not enough to be like last year; we will need to work harder.

“Manchester United will be our biggest rivals.

“They have quality, tradition and history but I know that we have to pay attention to the other teams.

“Arsenal bought a fantastic striker in (Marouane) Chamakh, Liverpool have a new manager, they could be a strong opponent, and we have to look at Manchester City because they bought a lot of good players and they have to build a team. They could be involved in the title race.”

However, Ancelotti has done his level best to ensure Chelsea start the new campaign with the strongest squad possible, ensuring that Carvalho’s departure to Real Madrid this week was followed quickly by the capture of Brazil midfielder Ramires for around £18million.

The Benfica 23-year-old has joined on a four-year contract on the back of his involvement in the World Cup

“He is a fantastic player,” Ancelotti said.

“He will be the future of the Brazil national team and I hope he will be the future of Chelsea.

“He won’t have any problems adapting to the English game because he is not Brazilian 100%. Because usually a Brazilian doesn’t like to run, he likes to play football. He is a runner.”

Ancelotti said he was disappointed that Portuguese star Carvalho carried through on his agreement to leave this summer, after six years at Stamford Bridge.

But the Chelsea manager (Chelsea 4/11 to be top London club) insisted that the player’s exit did not mean he was in the market for a new centre half, despite being linked with Benfica centre half David Luiz.

Ancelotti said: “As a centre-back, we have (John) Terry, (Branislav) Ivanovic, Alex and (Jeffrey) Bruma. We are okay. We do not need anyone else.”

Dunne issues Milner warning

The long-running saga over James Milner’s future could be concluded within the next week but Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne has issued a stark warning to the winger (Aston Villa 15/2 to finish in the Top Four).

On Thursday, Villa boss Martin O’Neill admitted he would be willing to sell Milner if the club’s valuation of the player was met. In a statement on the club’s official website, he revealed that Milner and his agent came to see him before the World Cup to ask for a transfer away from Villa Park. Eastlands appears to be Milner’s most likely destination.

O’Neill’s announcement means that the ball is back in Manchester City’s court and it is believed that an offer of approximately £30million will be needed in order for them to land the winger. City had an offer of around £20million rejected in May.

Dunne made the opposite move last summer and accepts that Milner’s spell at Villa Park is most likely over. However, he has issued a stark warning to the player, urging him to think wisely before he leaves the Midlands club bound for City.

The issue is particularly personal to Dunne as he left Eastlands because City could not guarantee him the regular football he craved. Since moving to Villa, he has upped his game and has become an impressive stalwart in the side’s back line, making 35 league appearances for Martin O’Neill’s outfit last season.

Dunne told Sky Sports News that he fears the same situation could greet Milner as the one which forced him out of Eastlands. He also expressed a fear that City’s chances of winning the league could be blinding the player (City 4/1 to win Premier League).

He said; “Obviously we’ll miss James because he’s been brilliant, but we have to move on and the manager will build again.

“James will know that because he’s joining a big club, a club that wants to win the league, that he’ll be part of a squad.

“At Aston Villa he will play every week and at Manchester City he may not, but it’s an opportunity he probably thinks to go and win the league.”

It is believed that City will make their move soon but boss Roberto Mancini has given no indication over whether he will step up his attempts to sign Milner after O’Neill’s announcement.

Speaking during City’s pre-season tour of America, Mancini said; “Milner is a good player but today he is an Aston Villa player.

“If we have a chance we could take him, but we must wait for now.”

With City set to sign a raft of other stars between now and transfer deadline day, Dunne’s fears could be substantiated.

Milner was one of England’s few shining lights during the World Cup and the fear for fans of the national side is that a lack of first team football could be detrimental to his England form.

However, the meteoric rise of Adam Johnson at City proves that these fears may perhaps be unfounded. Only time will tell should Milner make the move he so desperately craves.
