Fab ‘considering Carragher recall’

Fabio Capello looks set to name Jamie Carragher in the England World Cup squad in an effort to solve his centre-back crisis (England 11/2 to win the World Cup).

The Liverpool central defender quit international football three years ago, but speculation has increased that Capello will name Carragher in his 30-man provisional squad on Tuesday.

Those chosen in the provisional squad are set to travel to a pre-tournament training camp in Austria and have warm-up games against Mexico and Japan, before the opening World Cup game against USA on June 12 (England 1/3 to win Group C).

Carragher made himself unavailable for England after expressing his disappointment at being played out of position, as he revealed in a radio interview in 2007: “I’ve never really played centre-half for England and, to be honest, I’ve never really played that well for England because I’ve  played a lot of the time at full-back.

“If Steve McClaren’s chosen people ahead of me then I don’t think anyone can really complain if I would rather concentrate and save myself for Liverpool games.”

Carragher has been outspoken about his England career since quitting the international scene, making the following comments in his autobiography: “I confess: defeats wearing an England shirt never hurt me in the same way as losing with my club.

“I wasn’t uncaring or indifferent, I simply didn’t put England’s fortunes at the top of my priority list. Losing felt like a disappointment rather than a calamity.”

It now seems that Carragher has been persuaded to reverse that decision, due to England’s potential problems at centre-back.

John Terry’s form has been hit by his much-publicised off-the-field controversies, while his potential replacement as captain, Rio Ferdinand, has suffered from injuries all season.

Tottenham’s Ledley King has been instrumental to their recent success, but his knee problems ensure that he rarely plays more than one game per week and he has yet to represent England under Capello.

Other potential candidates such as Wes Brown and Joleon Lescot are also injured, while Michael Dawson and Gary Cahill remain uncapped.

The final squad of 23 will be named on June 1, but any subsequent seriously injured players can be replaced up to 24 hours before England’s World Cup opener and do not have to have been named in the original 30-man provisional squad.

England also have selection headaches in central midfield, following the injury to Gareth Barry, with the likes of Michael Carrick, Tom Huddlestone, Scott Parker and Owen Hargreaves ready to deputise, should the Manchester City player fail to recover for the World Cup.

How Spurs can beat Arsenal to Premiership third spot

post thumbnail

Arsenal FC 150x150 How Spurs can beat Arsenal to Premiership third spotAll the midweek excitement in the Premiership centred on Tottenham’s win over Manchester City which guaranteed the North London club their first crack at the Champions League. However, they still have something more to play for.

Spurs win took them to within two points of Arsenal who lie in third place. If Harry Redknapp’s side could overtake the Gunners it would be worth more than just bragging rights in North London.

Though finishing fourth in the table offers a shot at the main European competition, the fourth English participant has to go through tough qualifiers to reach the lucrative group stage.

Arsenal had to go via that route in this campaign and Arsene Wenger would desperately like to avoid that again, as the games take place almost before the league season has begun and new men are being bedded in.

  • You can bet on this outcome: Can Arsenal Finish Third?

The new rules adopted for the Champions League qualifiers mean that the last English side could face opponents from top leagues like Italy, Spain or Germany.

Harry RedknappThe Gunners still hold the advantage over their bitter rivals, although they have to assume that Spurs will take maximum points from their trip to Burnley on the final day of the season.

Unless Burnley suffer a complete collapse, a point in their home game against Fulham will be enough for Arsenal as they are currently ten goals to the good on goal difference.

With the Europa League Final coming up, Roy Hodgson is very unlikely to send out a full strength Fulham team but that can have its dangers for Arsenal. There will be players trying to clinch a place on the bench for the final against Athletico Madrid- and they will be more motivated than is normal for a mid-table side.

  • You can bet on this outcome: Can Spurs Finish Third?

Other members of the side will relish the chance to start at the Emirates and players like striker Erik Nevland could see this as his last game in the Premiership- and want to go out in style.

The pressure is all on Arsenal to make sure they don’t slip up at the death. Their players will be kicking themselves for allowing this situation to develop when third place seemed a certainty just a few weeks ago.

Ferguson hails Evans deal

Jonny EvansJonny Evans has been described as a future leader of Manchester United (United 11/5 Premiership Outright 2010/2011) by boss Sir Alex Ferguson after he signed a new four-year deal at Old Trafford.

The Northern Ireland international defender has figured heavily in the Red Devils’ current campaign due to a myriad of respective injury problems to the first-choice pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic.

And Ferguson is delighted to tie him down to a long-term contract as he feels Evans will eventually go on to captain the side in the coming seasons.

“Jonny has signed a new deal,” said Ferguson.

“We have been working on it for a few months now and I am happy that he has signed it.”

United still have a chance of winning this season’s Premier League title (7/1 Outright) but they must defeat Stoke City in their final match of the campaign at Old Trafford (United 1/9, Stoke 16/1, draw 7/1 90 Minutes) on Sunday and hope Chelsea slip up at home to Wigan (Chelsea 1/10, Wigan 20/1, draw 7/1 90 Minutes).

Ferguson feels the week that United lost at home to Chelsea in between crashing out of the Champions League on away goals over two legs against Bayern Munich will be the key period of the season that cost United if they fail to retain their league crown this weekend.

“It was a bad week for us and it might have cost us everything,” said Ferguson.

“The biggest disappointment was the European Cup. It is an absolute travesty because we were the better team.”

Can Real Madrid take Barcelona to La Liga wire?

post thumbnail

ChrisLa Liga 300x150 Can Real Madrid take Barcelona to La Liga wire? went some way to repaying the huge transfer fee Real Madrid payed for him in the summer with a dazzling display against a very decent Real Mallorca side.

Ronaldo (2.75 to score first) claimed a hat-trick in a 4-1 win for los Blancos on Wednesday night – which keeps the pressure on Barcelona in the title race.

Both sides will be playing at 8pm on Saturday night with Madrid playing at home against Athletic Blibao – a side they lost to earlier in the season.
Bilbao are chasing a place in next season’s Europa League as they currently sit in 8th place just two points behind Getafe in 6th position. However, they are on a dismal run of form and have not won in nearly a month.

Their away record is pretty poor too with only 4 wins on the road all season – compare that with Real Madrid’s fine home record of 17 wins and just 1 loss, Bilbao haven’t got a chance.

  • Back another Galactico special show and a 3-0 home win at 6.50 with PartyBets.com.

Real Madrid will be hoping Champions League place chasing Sevilla can do them a favour by taking points of Barcelona as we play out the final two games each of the La Liga season.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have already exceeded the 90 points mark – an amount which would be enough to win La Liga in previous seasons. Whoever loses out now will be bitterly disappointed to say the least – but it is in Barcelona’s hands.

Sevilla though will not be in a charitable mood, they know defeat to Barcelona opens the door for Mallorca to slip back into the coveted 4th place – and with a 5-1 win away to Santander on Wednesday night showing what Sevilla are capable of, Barcelona might be worried.

The two sides have gone head-to-head four time in the last 12 months with Barca winning 3 and losing 1, there last meeting was a comprehensive 4-0 win for Messi and co at the Nou Camp.

  • Barcelona will have enough in their locker to stay on path to win this season’s La Liga so back a 2-0 in for Guardiola’s men at 6.50 with Partybets.com.

Grayson looking to complete job

Leeds boss Simon Grayson is confident the team he puts out against Bristol Rovers at Elland Road on Saturday will get them over the finish line and earn automatic promotion from League One.

The Whites are odds-on (1/5) to join Norwich City back in the Championship next season although the likes of Millwall, Swindon, Charlton and even Huddersfield are all waiting in the wings should the fallen Yorkshire giants slip up again.

Leeds have simply been down among the dead men for too long after paying the price for ‘living the dream’ under former chairman Peter Ridsdale.

But they have the chance to avoid the dreaded play-offs by putting the Pirates to the sword on home soil on the final day of the regular League One season – and they are certainly fancied to do just that (Leeds 2/7, draw 7/2, Rovers 8/1 in match betting).

Grayson is picking from a position of relative strength at the end of a long season, with just Ben Parker, Paddy Kisnorbo, Jason Crowe and Aidy White on the sidelines.

“We’ve got everyone you would expect available,” said Grayson. “We’ll consider all our options and, as I always say, we will put a team out that we believe can do the job we want to do.”

Win and Leeds are up, but any other result makes them vulnerable given their slender one-point advantage over Millwall and Swindon, who meet at the Den.

The Lions could be without top scorer Steve Morrison with the hitman facing a late fitness test on a hamstring problem although fit-again Gary Alexander, who himself is no stranger to the back of the net, is ready to be pitched in following a bad heel injury.

Robins forward Vincent Pericard, once of Juventus, Portsmouth and Stoke, looks set to sit the game out with a heel problem of his own after missing last weekend’s 3-2 victory over Brentford.

Swindon chief Danny Wilson admits his side will be under the best kind of pressure.

He told the BBC:  “You’ve just got to enjoy it. I’d certainly rather be in our position than fighting against relegation.

“We’ll go out and remember this time because they don’t come around too often.”

At the other end of the League One table, four clubs are slugging it out to avoid joining Southend, Wycombe and Stockport in League Two next season.

Tranmere, Gillingham, Hartlepool or Exeter will lose their place in the division, with the unlucky club’s players set for a miserable summer break.

Palermo v Sampdoria: The Champions League Place Showdown

post thumbnail

Sampdoria 300x200 Palermo v Sampdoria: The Champions League Place ShowdownAlthough Inter Milan and AS Roma are both in the race to lift this season’s Scudetto they are both likely to win comfortably at home on Sunday. The match that carries the most significance for the winners on Sunday will be the clash between 4th placed Sampdoria and 5th placed Palermo.

The winner of this match will only have to win their final game of the season to be guaranteed a place in next season’s Champions League and with the millions of pounds of revenue it generates it will be a great achievement for either of these two clubs.

Sampdoria striker Giampaolo Pazzini has described the clash as more of a “final” than a league game.

Pazzini said: “It will be ‘the game’, a real final. We have a little advantage thanks to the two extra points in the table, but if we were to play for a draw we would make a bad impression.

“For this reason we will go to Palermo and try and win.”
Sampdoria has won every one of their last 5 games and is the form team in Serie A at the moment.

Palermo boast one of the leagues best strikers in Fabrizio Miccoli who is the third highest scorer in Serie A with Sampdoria’s Giampaolo Pazzini being 4th.

The two sides are very evenly matched and a very tight affair should be expected on Sunday. There may well be only a couple of goals in it so the under 2.5 market at 1.90 looks a good bet.

Sampdoria have shown how good they are with a recent win away to league chasing Roma and they will be able to wrap up fourth place this Sunday as well. Back a 1-0 win for Sampdoria at 8.00 with PartyBets.com.

Ancelotti calls for calm heads

Manchester United supporters praying for a miracle at Stamford Bridge on Sunday should perhaps look away now (1/12 Chelsea 7/1 Man United – Premier League outright).

Premier League leaders Chelsea will win a first domestic crown since 2006 if they beat Roberto Martinez’s Wigan – regardless of how the defending champions do against already-safe Stoke at Old Trafford (1/10 Chelsea 7/1 draw 20/1 Wigan – match betting).

Martinez has toed the party line by insisting his players will play for professional pride and refuse to roll over.

However, scratch below the surface and the omens do not look good for Latics.

They have lost their last seven top-flight matches in London, including a 9-1 hammering at Tottenham and 4-0 thrashing from Arsenal earlier this season.

United fans can take heart from the fact that Wigan have already beaten Chelsea this season and they effectively ended Arsenal’s title challenge three weeks ago when they appeared doomed.

But all the evidence suggests Chelsea should have too much to avoid a coupon buster against the visitors.

Carlo Ancelotti, twice a winner of the European Cup as a player and manager, only managed one Scudetto in a trophy-laden spell with his former club AC Milan.

But the experienced Italian remains on course for both the Premier League title and FA Cup.

Ancelotti has called for full concentration and demanded his players keep a lid on their emotions.

He said: “We have to play one more game, though, and nothing is decided yet. But we have a great opportunity and a great possibility because the team is fit, in good condition and has fantastic motivation for this game.”

“We have to be ready, but we have to play for 90 minutes. We come to play this game, to try our best. They have a very good team and beat us earlier in the season, so we have to pay attention,” he added.

Ricardo Carvalho, Jose Bosingwa, Michael Essien and John Mikel Obi, who will miss the FA Cup final against Portsmouth after knee surgery, will sit out the final game of the season.

Rooney reveals Premier regrets

Wayne RooneyWayne Rooney claims Manchester United can point to seven Premier League defeats this season if they fail to clinch a fourth straight title from under the noses of Chelsea (United 7/1, Cheslea 1/12 – Premier League Outright).

The United and England frontman is set to be fit to face Stoke on Sunday as United need to win (United 1/9, Stoke 16/1, draw 7/1 – 90 Minutes) and hope that Wigan prevent Chelsea from picking up three points in their final game of the season at Stamford Bridge (Chelsea 1/10, Wigan 20/1, draw 7/1 – 90 Minutes).

However, Rooney acknowledges that a favourable outcome for Sir Alex Ferguson’s side is a tall order, while suggesting that they have not been ruthless enough throughout the course of the league season.

“If we could have stayed more consistent and not lost so many games we would have won the league but we’ve lost too many games,” he told The Sun.

“We shouldn’t be losing seven games at this club.”

United did lift the Carling Cup at Wembley in March, but Rooney has also been left frustrated by their FA Cup exit at the hands of Leeds United and Champions League elimination on away goals to Bayern Munich.

Rooney added: “The FA Cup defeat to Leeds was not good enough. As for the Champions League, we were a bit unlucky considering the way we started against Bayern.

“I couldn’t see us losing that tie. But we went out on away goals and it was hard to take.”

Barry fears played down

Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry will see a specialist this week about his ankle injury but it is not thought that problem is serious enough to keep him out of the World Cup (11/2 England – World Cup 2010 outright).

Barry was forced to come off during the second half of City’s crucial top-four clash with Tottenham on Wednesday night.

There were initial concerns that Barry may be facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines, with the World Cup looming later this month.

With Fabio Capello watching on from the stands, the former Aston Villa man was forced to limp off, leaving worried faces on the City bench and amongst England supporters.

The 29-year-old is seen as an almost certain inclusion in the 23-man party to go to South Africa and Capello will now be anxiously awaiting news of his scan.

Reports claim Barry has just suffered a sprained ankle but England officials will not know the full extent of the injury until the results of the scan are revealed, although he is definitely out of Sunday’s game at West Ham (West Ham 3/1, City 3/4 – match betting).

England will announce a 30-man provisional squad on Tuesday (May 11), with the final selection to be made by June 1.

City manager Roberto Mancini claimed on Wednesday night that the damage was “not too serious”, although he admitted it would require further tests for a full diagnosis to be confirmed.

Capello has always stated that he would want no doubts over a player’s fitness if he was to select them for this summer’s tournament in South Africa and any injuries at this stage would put a major question mark over the player’s availability.

Meanwhile, the Italian will have been impressed by another top-class performance from Tottenham defender Ledley King, who now looks a good bet to make the squad.

Harry Redknapp revealed this week that Capello had been in touch with regards King’s fitness, but two games in four days have indicated he could feature at the World Cup.

Wigan’s away form hands Chelsea huge Premiership advantage

post thumbnail

chelsea vs manchester united odds Wigans away form hands Chelsea huge Premiership advantageWigan boss Roberto Martinez has assured fans that the Latics are heading to Chelsea’s  Stamford Bridge on Sunday in search of a victory.

The odds stand in Chelsea’s favour 1/10 to win on Sunday, whereas Manchester United at 1/8 – both on the back of the opposition away form that has Wigan at 20/1 to win, and Stoke slightly shorter at 18/1

It will come as great news to Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson entertain Stoke at Old Trafford  looking for a win that could see them pip Chelsea to the title – should the Blues fail to beat Wigan.

  • Bet on this outcome: Can Chelsea Win the Premier League

The United camp will be buoyed by Wigan’s unpredictability and will head into Sunday’s match knowing that they still have a real chance if the same Wigan side turn up that have beaten Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool this season.

The problem is, all of those victories over the perceived ‘Top Four’ teams have come at the JJB Stadium.

Wigan’s away form in 2010 has left a lot to be desired. In fact, it’s been woeful – avoiding defeat on just two occasions and picking up just four points.

  • Bet on this outcome: Can Manchester United Win the Premier League

Since the turn of the year, Wigan have managed a solitary draw at Sunderland and one away victory, which came in a 2-0 win at Wolves on January 16th.

However, any suggestion of having nothing to play for will be hotly disputed by Latics chairman Dave Whelan, who knows that a victory could see them leapfrog Bolton into 14th and with it, secure additional money for their league finish.

A loss at Chelsea coupled with a draw or win for Wolves and a victory for West Ham could see Wigan finish as low as 17th.

So, Wigan certainly have something to play for, and in one of the most exciting and unpredictable seasons in years, who would put it past the Lancashire outfit to wreck the Stamford Bridge party?
