Liverpool agree sale in principle

The board of directors at Liverpool (Evens – Premier League Top 6 finish) has agreed the sale of the club in principle, subject to the approval of the Premier League, to New England Sports Ventures.

The potential takeover is also subject to the resolution of a legal dispute between the two owners, George Gillett and Tom Hicks, who did their best on Tuesday night to avert the sale and regain control at Anfield.

Two “excellent” bids were received last night but the US owners tried to block the sale by replacing managing director Christian Purslow and commercial director Ian Ayre with Mack Hicks and Lori Kay McCutcheon.

Hicks and Gillett argued that the English directors were not acting in the best interests of the club by saying the NESV bid, and another from Asia, “dramatically undervalued the club”.

Purslow, Ayre and chairman Martin Broughton are taking legal action over their possible exits and are trying to force through a sale.

Broughton told the club’s website: “I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process which has been thorough and extensive.

“The board decided to accept NESV’s proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV’s philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at the Red Sox.

“We’ve met them in Boston, London and Liverpool over several weeks and I am immensely impressed with what they have achieved and with their vision for Liverpool Football Club.

“By removing the burden of acquisition debt, this offer allows us to focus on investment in the team. I am only disappointed that the owners (Tom Hicks and George Gillett) have tried everything to prevent the deal from happening and that we need to go through legal proceedings in order to complete the sale.”

NESV are partly owned by futures and foreign exchange trading advisor John W. Henry, who has an estimated fortune of £540m, and own a number of sporting companies, including the Boston Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Rousch Fenway Racing.

Liverpool’s off-field problems have had a huge effect on matters on the pitch with the Reds (11/1 to be relegated) enduring their worst start to a season since 1953-54, when they were relegated.

Roy Hodgson’s men have won just once this season in the Premier League – a 1-0 victory over West Brom at Anfield – and have slipped to 18th place in the table, while they were also dumped out of the Carling Cup by League Two minnows Northampton.

Liverpool (10/1 – Europa League outright betting) do top Group K in the Europa League after a win and a draw in their first two matches but will be looking for a dramatic turnaround of their domestic form to try and ensure of qualification for next year’s European competitions.

Style over substance for Fabregas

Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas has revealed that the style of play is at the forefront of the Spain (7/2 favourites to win Euro 2012) national side’s philosophy and that the team would be jeered by the fans if they played like England (9/1).

Spain’s technique and free-flowing style has been lauded for some time and it has now been rewarded with the Red Fury winning both Euro 2008 and the World Cup in South Africa earlier this year.

Fabregas, who set up the World Cup-winning goal for Andres Iniesta against Netherlands, admitted that the style of play is more important than the result and that they have no intention of changing their methods any time soon.

Fabregas told the Daily Telegraph: “The way we play is the most important. It’s about how you do it. You will never play the ball longer or do some things you are not used to.

“We want to win playing football. If it doesn’t happen, it doesn’t happen but we want to be the best this way. We did it last summer and we want to keep doing it.”

The Gunners ace also had a dig at England and insisted La Roja will never resort to a long-ball game.

“Here in England it is passion and the fans love it when there are hard tackles and you play long balls and counter-attack,” Fabregas added.

“If you do that in Spain they will boo you.

“They are used to another kind of football. Here [in England] if you play good football, good football, good football and you don’t win then they can boo you for the opposite. You have to believe in your style and go for it.”

Spain (1/10 to win Group I) cruised to a 4-0 win at Liechtenstein in their opening match of their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign and now face a double-header to try and climb to the top of the standings.

First up on Friday is a clash with Lithuania, who currently have four points from two games but lie second on goals scored, and the defending champions are 1/16 favourites to maintain their 100 per cent record, with the visitors priced at a massive 20/1 and the draw at 7/1.

Vicente del Bosque’s men then travel to current table-toppers Scotland (11/2 to qualify) next Tuesday before resuming action next March with games against Czech Republic and Lithuania.

Hughes eyes famous victory

Fulham’s Aaron Hughes believes Northern Ireland are capable of recording another famous win at Windsor Park when they welcome Italy (8/13 Italy – 90 minutes) in Belfast on Friday.

Nigel Worthington’s side got their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign off to a flying start with a 1-0 victory in Slovenia and will be looking to make it two out of two when they face the Azzurri.

Northern Ireland have been placed in a tough group and will have to get the better of Italy, Serbia, Estonia, Slovenia and the Faroe Islands if they are to reach their first major competition since the 1982 World Cup.

Their last qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup ended in failure as they finished fourth of six, seven points behind eventual group winners Slovakia.

While it is unlikely Northern Ireland (8/1 to qualify for Euro 2012) will do any better in their bid to reach Ukraine and Poland in two years’ time they will hope for some more famous nights at Windsor Park along the way.

In the past Northern Ireland have caused some big upsets at their famous old ground, beating Spain and England recently.

Despite Italy’s recent fall from grace a victory over the four-time world champions would represent a massive achievement for Worthington’s men.

Italy currently top Group C having won their first two matches against Estonia and the Faroe Islands.

However, it will arguably be their biggest test when they face Northern Ireland at Windsor Park on Friday night.

Hughes believes he and his compatriots have every chance of causing an upset against Italy, although the Fulham defender says they can’t underestimate the Azzurri despite their recent performances.

“At home over the last few years we’ve had some really good results,” Hughes told Fulham’s official website.

“The England and Spain games will be talked about for years and we beat a lot of good teams that were ranked higher than us at home.

“Our home form is strong and we should go into the game with plenty of confidence, but it would be extremely dangerous to go into the match thinking Italy aren’t what they used to be because the team is full of quality players.”

Northern Ireland (16/1 Group C outright) follow Friday’s game against Italy (4/9) with a trip to Toftir to face Faroe Islands (5000/1) four days later.

Worthington will have to do with Pat McCourt for both matches as the Celtic winger is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Rangers’ Andrew Little has been called up instead of Adam Barton after he withdrew while Niall McGinn is back after missing the game with Slovenia.

Hodgson reacts to Blackpool shock

Liverpool are 18/1 to be playing Championship football next season and boss Roy Hodgson admits the Reds are in a Premier League relegation battle.

Hodgson watched on as his side slumped to an embarrassing Anfield defeat to new boys Blackpool on Sunday, to leave them in the bottom three on goal difference.

Liverpool have won just once in the league so far this season, with seven games gone, and they are already a massive 12 points behind leaders Chelsea (Liverpool 7/1 – Top Four Finish).

But by the same token, Hodgson’s men are just three points behind his former club Fulham, who sit in mid-table, but the ex-Inter Milan chief is refusing to take anything for granted as fans await an upturn in fortunes.

He said: “It’s seven games gone and there are 31 left, which is an awful lot of games, but the fact is that when you are in the relegation zone you are in a relegation battle.”

Hodgson now has two weeks to stew over his side’s travails as the international break for Euro 2012 qualifiers means Liverpool are not in action until Sunday October 17.

The Reds’ next Premier League game is the small matter of a trip to Goodison Park to face city rivals Everton.

The Blues have also endured a slow start to their campaign, but did sign off before the break with a morale-boosting 2-0 win at Birmingham.

Interestingly, Everton are still searching for their first home win in the league this term while Liverpool have not won away.

Goodison captain Phil Neville admits the shame of starting last weekend at the bottom of the table played a part in the Birmingham victory.

“We were bottom of the league and it was the kick up the backside we needed,” said the former England international.

“We’ve also let the fans down. They have been deflated these last couple of weeks and we have as well.

“I think they saw us get our just rewards at Birmingham for the effort we put in. The pleasing thing is we’ve not lost that self-belief.”

Neville added: “Sometimes when you have bad defeats, you can revert back to safety first and playing with fear. I don’t think we’ve done that and everybody needs applauding for that.”

Everton can be backed at 12/1 to finish in the top four of the Premier League.

Essien questions City “stamina”

Ray Wilkins and Michael Essien have joined forces to question whether or not Manchester City have the staying power to usurp Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title (15/2 Manchester City – Premier League Outright).

The champions bounced back from a 1-0 defeat at Eastlands last month by securing capital gains with a 2-0 victory over London rivals Arsenal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday to lead City by four points at the top of the table.

A fourth draw on the road this season for Manchester United – against Sunderland on Saturday – means they now trail the west Londoners at the top of the pile by five points.

Assistant manager Wilkins accepts City have to be taken seriously given the huge outlay afforded to boss Roberto Mancini, but says Chelsea still view United and Arsenal as the biggest threats to his side’s hopes of retaining the English crown (8/13 Chelsea – Premier League Outright).

The former England midfielder believes Mancini will need more time to work out his strongest team and his new signings have not fused yet.

He told the Independent: “It will always be Manchester United, it will always be Arsenal.

“They will always be there or thereabouts. Yes, City, as fabulous a group of footballers as they have, have got to gel as a unit.”

He added: “They are getting results and good luck to them as well, but it’s never easy when you are just pulling guys together and hoping that it will come together.

“It’s very tough and Roberto (Mancini) is doing a good job for them as well.”

Ghana powerhouse Essien says City’s spending prowess dictates they have to be considered as dangerous – but he is not convinced they have the collective know-how to sustain a season-long challenge for the domestic game’s biggest prize.

He said: “Manchester City are our closest challengers right now. You can see they made good signings and they will be up for it. We will see what happens. I don’t know if they will have the stamina but they have the players to go out and do the job.”

Essien added: “Maybe we have an advantage because we know what it takes to win the league but every season is different. We have to keep going.”

Carlo Ancelotti’s men return after the international break with a difficult Premier League away trip to Villa Park to take on Aston Villa on October 16.

Long road ahead, warns Jose

Real Madrid put down a marker in La Liga on Sunday with a 6-1 demolition of Deportivo La Coruna – but the result did nothing to tempt totesport.com into making Spain’s capital club favourites for the title race (Evens Real Madrid – La Liga Primera Outright 2010/2011).

Real finally got the win and performance their supporters had been craving since Jose Mourinho was installed as the new manager in the summer, to serve notice of their Primera Division intentions.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s most expensive footballer, scored twice in a one-sided contest against basement club Depor at a rain-drenched Bernabeu to leave Real in third place behind leaders Valencia and Villarreal (13/8 Valencia – La Liga Primera W/O Barcelona & Real Madrid).

The manner of the win had a whiff of inevitability about it given that Real had found the net just nine times since the start of the season prior to the Depor drubbing.

The Spanish giants had come under fire in the recent home match against Osasuna but the shackles finally came off against Miguel Lotina’s strugglers.

Mourinho refused to get carried away by the goal-fest and insisted his players still had work to do to win their first Spanish crown since 2008.

He said: “We look above and see there are still teams in front of us. We need to continue working.”

The Portuguese coach, who led Internazionale FC to an unprecedented treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League titles last season, said he would thrive on the desire to win over his detractors.

Mourinho endured a stormy relationship with the Italian press during his time in Milan and doubts remain whether his conservative approach will win over seasoned Real fans accustomed to champagne football.

The former Chelsea coach admitted he still had work to do to appease the Bernabeu faithful but shrugged off personal criticism of his brand of football.

He said: “The doubts people have motivate me and make me laugh. I don’t understand why there are doubts about a coach who has won what I’ve won.

“I haven’t won three Champions League and seven championships – I’ve won two Champions Leagues and six championships. Is that sufficient to coach here? If so, I’ll continue working with calmness.”

He added: “I have the confidence of the president and the board. If they let me work here for four years, I promise a great team. We will have games likes this one and like the one against Levante.”

Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Mallorca at Camp Nou on Sunday but totesport.com still has the champions as 5/6 favourites to retain their crown.

Scotland wait on McGregor

Scotland coach Craig Levein is hoping to have goalkeeper Allan McGregor fit for their Euro 2012 qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Spain as they aim to keep alive their hopes of reaching Poland and the Ukraine in two years’ time (No 1/10 Yes 11/2 – Scotland To Qualify For Euro 2012).

Scotland currently lead Group I (16/1 Group Winner) after securing four points from their opening matches against Lithuania and Liechtenstein.

However, they will face some of their toughest tests in the coming week when they travel to the Czech Republic in Prague on Friday and then face reigning World and European champions Spain at Hampden four days later.

And Levein is looking for Rangers shot-stopper McGregor to shake off a thigh injury in time to play in both matches given that Sunderland’s Craig Gordon is not deemed to be fully fit following a long-term arm injury, while Blackpool’s Matt Gilks has pulled out the squad after suffering a dead leg.

Kilmarnock 24-year-old Cammy Bell has received his first call-up to the Scotland squad, but Levein will not want to throw an inexperienced international custodian into battle against such top opposition.

Rangers defender Kirk Broadfoot is missing due to a foot injury, while his club team-mate Lee McCulloch is carrying a hip problem in addition to being suspended for the Czech game.

Therefore Levein has drafted in Watford midfielder Don Cowie and Cardiff defender Kevin McNaughton as cover, while he will hope Tottenham Hotspur right-back Alan Hutton and Barnsley left-back Jay McEveley recover from slight knocks in time for Friday.

Levein said: “Players are being assessed at this moment.

“I can tell you Kirk Broadfoot will go back to his club. He has a foot problem and it is safest if he isn’t involved.

“Lee is another that I don’t know about yet.

“Matt Gilks has a problem with a dead leg, Alan Hutton is a bit sore in his groin and Jay McEveley has a problem as well.”

Capello reveals Bent plan

Sunderland hitman Darren Bent (8/1 – Premier League Top Scorer) will have every reason to feel confident this season after England coach Fabio Capello confirmed him as “one of the important players for the future”.

The 26-year-old may have been overlooked for the Italian’s 2010 World Cup squad, when Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch got the nod.

But Capello insists he will be involved for his country now on, stating on the FA website: “Bent is back. In front of goal, he is really dangerous.

“He played 20 minutes against Switzerland and scored an important goal. Now he is training really well. He is probably one of the important players for the future.”

Bent failed to make the cut for the ill-fated trip to South Africa in the summer despite smashing 24 goals last term to finish second behind Rooney as the most prolific English striker in the Premier League.

The former Charlton and Ipswich star has successfully relaunched his career with the Black Cats after an unhappy spell with Tottenham between 2007-09.

The Londoner still managed 18 goals in 60 appearances for the White Hart Lane outfit, however he never really seemed to have the confidence of boss Harry Redknapp having been signed by Martin Jol.

Bent made the switch to the Stadium of Light for £10m although he could eventually cost Sunderland a reported £16.5m, if various add-ons become payable by the Wearsiders (Sunderland 9/1 – Top Six Finish).

England are not in action until Tuesday October 12 when they entertain Montenegro in a Euro 2012 qualifier, with Capello keen to give his squad as much rest as possible.

He confirmed: “A lot of players have played a lot of games before we play, I prefer to select the players for the game on Tuesday.

“Also I prefer not to play a friendly game on the Friday because we think that the Montenegro game will be really, really important.”

Capello added: “We know that in this period we are really good, the players are playing well and physically it is a really good moment.

“We have to wait five months for the next game with Wales, so we know what we have to do.”

England have got off to a storming start to their Euro 2012 qualification campaign, with back-to-back wins against Bulgaria and Switzerland to top Group G (Three Lions 1/25 – To Qualify).

Capello calls for Bolton’s Davies

Kevin daviesFabio Capello has made the shock decision to hand Bolton striker Kevin Davies an England call-up for the Three Lions’ Euro 2012 qualifier against Montenegro (22/1 Group G outright).

The 33-year-old former Blackburn and Southampton striker has never been picked for the full international squad, despite having impressed for the Trotters in recent campaigns.

With Davies coming to the end of his career, it will come as a shock to the player himself that he has been included in the Italian’s 23 for the qualifier.

Capello had few options to choose from with Bobby Zamora and Jermain Defoe injured and Emile Heskey having retired from the international game.

Davies is joined in the squad by Peter Crouch, Darren Bent and Wayne Rooney, despite his recent injury problems.

The Manchester United forward was ruled out for three weeks last week by Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson but has been given a call-up by Capello.

The 23-year-old has struggled for form this season after an awful World Cup, with reports suggesting he has been badly affected by the well publicised off-the-field problems which have dogged his personal life recently.

Despite his problems, Capello has decided to include Rooney for the Wembley clash against Montenegro next Tuesday, who join England (9/1 not to qualify for Euro 2012) at the top of Group G having won their first two matches.

There is no place for Newcastle striker Andy Carroll, despite the promising forward being left out of the England Under-21 squad.

The other surprise inclusions, aside from Davies, include recalls for West Ham’s Robert Green and Liverpool’s Joe Cole, both of whom haven’t been seen in an England shirt since the World Cup.

Cole and Green have had mixed starts for their respective clubs this season, with Capello opting to given the Hammers shot stopper a reprieve in place of Scott Carson.

Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere also makes the 23 having featured in every one of the Gunners matches so far this season.

There are also recalls for John Terry and Rio Ferdinand, after both missed out on the first two qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Aaron Lennon also finds himself back in the England (9/1 Euro 2012 outright) fold with Theo Walcott sidelined through injury.

Those unlucky enough to miss out after call-ups for the last squad include Gary Cahill, Michael Carrick, Carlton Cole and Kieran Gibbs.

England squad in full:

Ben Foster (Birmingham City), Robert Green (West Ham United), Joe Hart (Manchester City);

Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Phil Jagielka (Everton), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Joleon Lescott (Manchester City), John Terry (Chelsea), Stephen Warnock (Aston Villa);

Gareth Barry (Manchester City), Joe Cole (Liverpool), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Tom Huddlestone (Tottenham Hotspur), Adam Johnson (Manchester City), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Aston Villa);

Darren Bent (Sunderland), Peter Crouch (Tottenham Hotspur), Kevin Davies (Bolton), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United).
