The Catalan giants now only have one title left to play for and all they have to do is win their remaining four games as they currently hold a one point advantage over Real Madrid who are just waiting for a Barcelona slip to leapfrog them to the top of La Liga.

Barcelona will attempt to put the disappointment of Wednesday night behind them when they travel to Villareal on Saturday night. Of the four games Barcelona have left this fixture is one of the trickiest and they will have to be emotionally over their Champions League exit.

Villareal themselves need to produce a sprint to the finishing line if they are to sneak into the top four in a late bid for a Champions League place next season. They are currently 6th in the league just four points behind Real Mallorca who occupy 4th place so they are in with a slim chance.

The Yellow Submarine managed to hold Barca to a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp when the two sides met in January, but they will have to turn in the perfect performance if they are to beat Barcelona at El Madrigal this weekend.

Barcelona are out in front but only just as they have Real Madrid breathing firmly down their neck, this one looks like going down to the wire.

With only four games each to play and just a single point separating the two sides now is a good time to examine the remaining fixtures each club face to see where potential point could be dropped to determine if Real Madrid are going to snatch the league title back from la Blaugrana or if Pep Guardiola will be claiming his second title in two years.

1 May – Villareal (Away)
The next game in La Liga and possibly their toughest match of the run-in. Villareal are chasing a European spot in the league and there is real potential for Barca to drop points here.
4 May – Tenerife (Home)

Sevilla are currently involved in a real battle for the final Champions League position with Real Mallorca and this fixture will be another difficult one for the current champs.
15 May – Valladolid (Home)
Another relegation candidate travels to the Nou Camp and another three points for Barcelona.

Real Madrid fixtures
1 May – Osasuna (Home)
Osasuna are not safe from relegation yet and they won’t be any safer after leaving the Bernabeu pointless.
4 May – Mallorca (Away)
Mallorca have been a revelation this season and have maintained a push for fourth spot all season long. The secret of their success has been a phenomenal home record and this fixture will be the hardest for los Blancos.
8 May – Athletic Bilbao (Home)
Athletic Bilbao have an awful away record this season and they won’t be able to do anything to improve upon it up against Madrid.
15 May – Malaga (Away)
A side scrapping against relegation at home on the last day of the season is a dangerous opponent and Madrid will not be given anything for free in this game – potential banana skin.

What can be seen then is that both sides face a couple of fixtures where there is potential to drop points. It is likely that both sides will pick up the same amount of points between now and the end of the season thus meaning Barcelona will retain their crown for another year.

A nice sub-plot to this fixture will be the matchup between Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Samuel Eto’o. Barcelona and Inter Milan agreed an incredible deal in the summer which saw Ibrahimovic join Barcelona for 46 million euros plus Samuel Eto’o in exchange. That deal raised many eyebrows as some would consider Eto’o to be the better striker of the two alone.

Eto’o seems to be fired up for this clash and has been speaking to the press about his desire to put one over on his former team mates.
“We all dream of beating Barcelona, and if I score at the San Siro then I will celebrate it”, he is quoting as saying to the press.

Samuel Eto’o is 7.00 to score the first goal on Tuesday with Ibrahimovic’s odds being slightly shorter at 6.00 for the opening goal.

Both sides are having to fight hard on the domestic front with Barcelona being held to a goaless draw by city rivals Espanyol on Saturday night and Inter Milan sitting a point behind Roma who went top after a 2-1 win over Lazio on Sunday. Inter will have had an extra day’s rest over Barcelona which may give them an advantage as a long season reaches its climax with massive games coming thick and fast for both sides.

This fixture was played out earlier in the competition as both sides were drawn in the same group. The game at the San Siro ended 0-0 with both defences managing to nullify the opposition attacking threat. Barcelona have been unstoppable in recent seasons with Europe’s biggest and best teams failing to stop them so a lowly Espanyol outfit look pretty unlikely to be able to halt Barcelona’s charge for the Primera Division.
