Old Firm primed for title fight

The new Scottish Premier League campaign is only days away and, as always, the main question surrounds which Old Firm side will reign supreme in 2011-12?

Rangers defied the odds last season when they took advantage of a late slip from Neil Lennon’s Celtic at Inverness to keep their cool and add the SPL crown to their Co-op Insurance Cup success.

The Hoops, who had to settle for the Scottish Cup, are again title favourites with Totesport (4/5 Outright) and are in determined mood going into this new season as they have also bolstered their ranks with the arrivals of Kelvin Wilson, Adam Matthews and Victor Wanyama.

Lennon, who boosted the club by agreeing to stay on as manager despite several threats against his security throughout the course of last season, is also attempting to bring in a new goalkeeper to replace Fraser Forster, with Croatia internationalist Stipe Pletikosa aiming to win a contract.

South Africa striker Katlego Mphela is also expected for a trial next week which has left Kris Commons in a confident mood as they bid to take the league title to the green and white side of Glasgow.

Commons, who impressed greatly after joining the Hoops from Derby in January, said: “Competition for places has never been so strong, especially across then midfield and back four.

“It keeps us as hungry as possible and hopefully good things will happen this year.”

Lennon has stressed the importance of Celtic doing well in Europe this time around as he feels it is “important for my development as a coach and the players’ development”.

But he is making no secret of the fact that it is his ultimate goal to prevent rival Ally McCoist getting his hands on the SPL trophy in his first season as manager after taking over from Walter Smith at Ibrox.

“I really need to win the title this year – that’s the priority,” Lennon admitted ahead of Sunday’s opener at Hibernian (Hibs 13/2, Celtic 2/5, Draw 11/4 90 Minutes).

“We came very close last season but we have only ourselves to blame for not doing it. I’m hoping we can go one better this season.”

Ironically, there is slightly more pressure on McCoist to retain the SPL title for the Gers (Evens Outright) than there was on his predecessor Walter Smith as businessman Craig Whyte arrived late last season and is willing to plough some much-needed funds into the club for new faces.

But McCoist has found his team strengthening mission harder to push through than Lennon with Spaniard Juan Manuel Ortiz the only addition to the Ibrox squad so far.

The former Rangers forward is battling to bring striker Kenny Miller back to the club from Turkish side Bursaspor, while a deal which would see defender Carlos Cuellar return after a three-year spell away at Aston Villa has also not yet materialised.

Should those deals go-ahead before the SPL curtain-raiser against Hearts (Rangers 3/10, Hearts 7/1, Draw 7/2 90 Minutes) at Ibrox this weekend, then you would have to fancy the Gers to be a good shout for more SPL success.

But, as it stands, midfielder Steven Davis, who has just signed a new five-year deal at the club to follow team-mates Allan McGregor and Steven Whittaker in penning new contracts, feels they are still short of numbers.

He admitted: “We’ve got quite a settled team from last season and a lot of us are on long-term deals now which is important.

“It’s just a case of adding to our group now as it’s a wee bit thin at the moment and it will be nice to get some fresh faces on board.”

So, at the moment it looks like Celtic marginally have the upper hand going into the season, but a lot depends on Rangers’ transfer activity before the end-of-August deadline before a clearer picture will emerge in another intriguing Old Firm title scrap.

2 from 5 in survival fight

Sunday promises to provide the most thrilling Premier League relegation battle in history, with five teams battling to survive in the top flight. We take a look at all the contenders and who might be facing the prospect of Championship football next season.

Wigan

Roberto Martinez’s men have given themselves a chance of survival with just one defeat in their last five games – picking up eight points from a possible 15.

Their last-gasp win over West Ham not only gave them hope, but will have also boosted confidence in a big way ahead of Sunday’s final game.

Latics (Evens to stay up) go to Stoke to face a team who never roll over, although their recent FA Cup final defeat will have knocked some of the stuffing out of Tony Pulis’ injury-hit squad.

Wigan have only beaten the Potters once in their last eight meetings, with their last victory at the Britannia coming in November 2004.

Blackpool

Most neutrals will hope the Tangerines can survive, having upset the odds so often this season on a tight budget.

The recent win over Bolton was a must and having rediscovered their goal-scoring form in recent weeks, they have renewed hope.

Blackpool (4/11 to be relegated) have the toughest final game of the weekend, with a trip to champions Manchester United, but it threatens to be a much changed United team that they face.

Charlie Adam and co are capable of avoiding defeat at Old Trafford, but a draw is unlikely to be enough and three points looks like a tall order.

Birmingham

A lack of goals has been Birmingham’s big problem all season and may yet cost them a place in the Premier League.

Three goals in their last five games tells its own story, as does the leading scorer tally – which is topped by midfielder Craig Gardner, with just seven in the league.

Blues (11/10 to stay up) have an away date at Spurs on Sunday and having not won on the road since early February, the omens don’t look good for Alex McLeish’s men.

A solid defensive display is needed at White Hart Lane, as the goals against column could yet prove crucial.

Wolves

Mick McCarthy’s men are arguably the team in form at the bottom end of the table with two wins and a draw in their last three matches.

Their only concern going into Sunday’s final game at home to Blackburn is that their form against the teams around them is poor.

Wolves (11/2 to be relegated) have beaten the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool this term and should be too strong for their opponents on Sunday, with a win certain of keeping them up for a second season.

Blackburn

Rovers have won just one of their last 13 games and their fans have every reason to be worried about relegation.

Steve Kean’s men have won just three times on the road this season and a defeat at Molineux could see them end up in the bottom three.

The only plus for Rovers (8/1 to be relegated) going into the final games is that they have at least a better goal difference than their rivals – and that may yet prove crucial.

Prediction: Blackpool and Birmingham to be relegated with West Ham

Eyes on the skies in SPL title fight

The destination of the Scottish Premier League title has come down to another ‘Helicopter Sunday’ with Rangers (1/6 SPL 2010/2011 Outright) and Celtic (7/2) separated by a single point going into the final matches.

Both Old Firm managers are desperate to lead their team to glory for different reasons, with Walter Smith hoping to bow out at the top by sealing his tenth SPL crown and third straight since he was brought back in for a second spell at the Ibrox helm.

Neil Lennon’s story is well documented and if the Celtic boss, in his first full season in charge of any club, can end Rangers’ stranglehold on Sunday he will have been victorious amid the most trying personal circumstances of any sporting figure in recent memory.

Celtic’s task is simple – defeat Motherwell at Celtic Park (Celtic 1/5, Motherwell 12/1 – Match Betting) and hope that Kilmarnock can either win or draw against Rangers at Rugby Park.

However, Kilmarnock (9/1 Match Betting) are anything but Rangers’ bogey side – having lost their last seven meetings home and away over the course of the last two seasons (Rangers 2/7).

Kilmarnock, who will finish fifth, have had a good season under Mixu Paatelainen and caretaker-boss Kenny Shiels, but they have again been unable to trouble Rangers.

The Ibrox club are the only club they have failed to take points off and in their last meeting, which Rangers won 3-2, Killie caused their own downfall by conceding two penalties and having a player sent off.

Celtic Park will be full to capacity with fans hoping for a glimpse of the helicopter hovering overhead at 2.30pm and home advantage could enable the Hoops to at least finish the season on a high.

January signing Kris Commons misses out through a silly suspension picked up in the midweek victory over Hearts at Tynecastle and Israel midfielder Beram Kayal is another key loss to injury.

Gary Hooper (11/4 to score 2 or more goals) has had a great season in attack for Celtic and he has the chance of a consolation prize if he can score two more goals to draw level with Kenny Miller in the top scorer chart.

Relegation fight tops the bill

Relegation issues take centre stage in most of Saturday’s six Premier League games, with both West Ham and Wigan Athletic hoping to climb out of the bottom three.

The Hammers face Blackburn Rovers in a must-win clash at Upton Park, with the visitors still in danger themselves as they are only three points above the drop zone.

Avram Grant’s hosts are 5/6 to gain three points that are an absolute necessity if they are to have any realistic chance of escaping the drop, with Blackburn 3/1 to secure a victory that would ease their own relegation fears greatly.

The outcome could well hinge on whether key duo Scott Parker and Matthew Upson pass fitness tests to feature for the home side, with the former having been an inspiration for his side all season.

Wigan’s task looks a little harder on paper as they travel to improving Aston Villa, who have all but banished their own relegation fears in recent weeks.

Again injury problems could have a major bearing on the result at Villa Park, with winger Charles N’Zogbia (dead leg) still doubtful for the Latics, with his skill and trickery a crucial factor if Wigan are to head home with anything to show for their efforts.

However, they head to the West Midlands buoyed by the knowledge that they have not lost in five Premier League visits to Villa Park.

The Latics have conceded just one goal in those five games, so don’t write them off just yet and they are 16/5 to keep a clean sheet when it really matters.

Blackpool will take to the field against Spurs already aware of the results that West Ham and Wigan have gained earlier in the day and that could heap even more pressure on Ian Holloway’s misfiring side.

A run of four consecutive home games should have provided a platform for the Seasiders to move towards safety, but having taken just two points from those games, they now need to shine in much more difficult fixtures.

The trip to White Hart Lane doesn’t look very appealing for Pool, with the hosts still holding out hopes of a top-four finish and a return to the Champions league and the visitors are 8/1 to gain a shock victory and 4/1 to even manage to secure a point.

Birmingham City are not entirely safe and a trip to Newcastle United is nothing like the guaranteed three points which Alex McLeish’s side require to ensure top-flight survival.

Earlier this season the Magpies won 2-0 at St Andrew’s and Alan Pardew’s men have reached mid-table security since then, despite the January sale of Andy Carroll to Liverpool.

They seem unlikely to give up three points without a fight and with the Blues having only scored 35 goals in 35 games this season, a draw, available at 9/4, looks like being the final result.

Bolton Wanderers and Sunderland meet at the Reebok Stadium in a match which has very little riding on it and given the Black Cats’ striker injury crisis, the home side should be confident of earning a win (Bolton 4/5, draw 5/2, Sunderland 16/5).

At Goodison Park Everton play host to Manchester City, who are now all but certain of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League for the first time.

However, the Toffees have been in fine form in recent weeks and have won six of their last seven meetings with the Citizens and are good value at 7/1 to win 1-0 this weekend.

Villa can boost survival fight

There is the rarity of all Saturday’s Premier League games kicking off at 3pm, with important fixtures at both ends of the table. Two sides looking over their shoulders meet at Villa Park, with Gerard Houllier’s men looking set for a crucial three points.

Aston Villa v Blackburn

Villa knocked Rovers out of the FA Cup last month and the home side look likely to repeat the dose when Steve Kean’s men return to the Midlands. The home side are just three points outside the bottom three but it’s their away form that has led to their slump.

Villa have lost just three times at home in 13 league games and have lost just one of their last eight games. Meanwhile, despite sitting in 11th, Rovers are just five points from the drop zone and their recent form will be a concern. One win in six indicates Blackburn are a team on the slide, and a lack of goals will also worry the Rovers faithful.

Match Bet: Darren Bent to score 2 or more @ 5/1

Wigan v Man Utd

A new surface at the DW Stadium looks set to play into United’s hands and Fergie’s men look set to extend their lead at the top. Wigan have relayed their patchy pitch in the last fortnight which means a better pitch for the leaders to perform on.

Latics will also be without key on-loan midfielder Tom Cleverley, who is in illegible, and although Rio Ferdinand is still sidelined, the visitors should prove too strong for an inconsistent Wigan who remain in the bottom three.

Match Bet: Draw HT / Man Utd FT @ 3/1

Wolves v Blackpool

A huge game for both sides in their battle for survival, but the pressure will firmly be on the shoulders of the home team. Wolves are currently bottom and have struggled against fellow relegation candidates this season – losing at home to the likes of Wigan and Aston Villa and being held by West Ham.

Blackpool will have received a massive boost from their midweek win over Spurs and will go in search of a sixth away win of the season. The absence of the suspended Charlie Adam will be a blow though, and that may swing things in favour of Mick McCarthy’s men.

Match Bet: Both teams to score @ 8/13

Everton v Sunderland

Forget the Cup win over Chelsea, this is the big test for Everton in front of their restless home fans….and it’s a game they can’t afford to lose. David Moyes’ men are just three points from the bottom three and have, amazingly, won just four of their 12 league games at Goodison. A lack of firepower is a continued problem and the Blues need Tim Cahill to deliver following his recent spell with Australia.

Sunderland are looking to avoid a fourth straight defeat, although the Black Cats are not playing as badly as the form guide suggests. Steve Bruce’s men have won two of their last three away games and could welcome back Fraizer Campbell.

Match Bet: Draw @ 5/2

Newcastle v Bolton

Alan Pardew has quietly gone about his business since his controversial appointment and knows two more wins should see the Magpies safe. Their home form has been impressive of late, with the Toon taking seven points from their last three fixtures and a win will see them move above their opponents in the table.

Newcastle’s hopes of another win will probably be helped by Bolton’s continuing FA Cup run. Wanderers are into the quarter-finals and that, combined with several injury problems, may see them slip out of the battle for a place in Europe.

Match Bet: Kevin Nolan to score @ 2/1

United show fight for title success

Sir Alex Ferguson feels the way his Manchester United players stormed back from two-down to win 3-2 at Blackpool on Tuesday evening could be the defining moment in this season’s Premier League title race. However, with 15 games still remaining, can any club overhaul the Red Devils at the top of the table?

Looking ahead to an eagerly-awaited run-un, I’ll examine United’s main rivals in the battle to be England’s top dog come the end of the season.

Manchester United

It could be argued that the Premier League is United’s (8/13 Outright) to lose following that thrilling win at Bloomfield Road. Fergie’s Red Devils moved five points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table and maintained their unbeaten run from 23 games as they attempt to emulate the Gunners’ ‘Invincibles’ of 2003-04.

Dimitar Berbatov’s two goals at Blackpool saw him reach 20 for the season (4/6 Premiership Top Goalscorer), while last season’s lynchpin Wayne Rooney has not even got going so far this term.

Ferguson feels the England striker is due to come good at some point and if that does happen then it would be difficult to imagine anyone denying United their championship.

The return of the Champions League in February could take its toll on the United squad in the latter stages of the domestic campaign should they progress (United 13/2 Champions League Outright).

However, the same can be said of their title rivals and United have the strength in depth to cope.

Arsenal

Gunners chief Arsene Wenger has stressed that he wants his players to try and win every tournament they are involved in with the quadruple still on the cards.

No silverware has gone to the north Londoners since 2005’s FA Cup win, but that could be put right next month when they will contest the Carling Cup final at Wembley (Arsenal 1/4 Outright).

They face Huddersfield in the FA Cup this Sunday and also have the Champions League knockout stage to look forward to next month.

Arsenal’s young squad has suffered mentally under the pressure towards the end of recent seasons and that has resulted in their downfall.

However, success in the Carling Cup on February 27 could get the monkey off their back in terms of winning some silverware which could help them for the final two months of the league season.

The main problem for the Gunners is consistency – which they appear to have found of late with three 3-0 wins in their last four league games – as they will no doubt look back at costly home defeats to West Brom and Newcastle earlier in the season should they fall short again (Arsenal 13/5 Outright).

Manchester City

Roberto Mancini’s main remit for the season was to secure Champions League qualification for City (1/7 Top 4 Finish) and end the club’s long wait for some silverware.

However, as the campaign has progressed into 2011, many feel the men from Eastlands are still very much embroiled in a fight for the title (12/1 Outright) as they sit six points behind United, but having played one game more.

Inconsistency and a leaky defence is City’s main problem ‘ a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa and conceding three goals at home to Wolves recently highlights this perfectly.

However, City have always led from the front and the recent arrival of Bosnian hitman Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg could be they key to them keeping the pressure on.

If Dzeko hits the ground running then he could add a few more points on the board, while the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Saturday February 12 could make or break their bid.

City’s other problem is their desperation to win a trophy could see them push too hard in the FA Cup and Europa League which might distract them from the bread and butter of the Premier League.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s shocking run of form in recent weeks looks to have put a spanner in their title ambitions (7/1 Premier League Outright) as they sit 10 points behind United and are in fourth spot.

However, following their spell of just one win in nine league games, Carlo Ancelotti’s men got back into the goals with a 7-0 thrashing of Championship side Ipswich in the FA Cup third round.

They have not looked back since with a 2-0 win against Blackburn at Stamford Bridge followed up by Monday’s 4-0 thumping of Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

Many observers are claiming the age of Chelsea’s key men is catching up with them this season.

However, to counter that you could say the reigning champions have the experience of what is required to win games when the nerves start to kick in during the run-in.

John Terry rightly pointed out that they still have Manchester United to play twice and, should they win both of those matches, the gap could be down to four points.

But, with the Champions League described by Frank Lampard described as the ‘Holy Grail’ for the west Londoners, it would be no surprise if they focused their attentions on success in Europe (Chelsea 9/2 Champions League Outright) this season and just ensure themselves a top-four spot in the Premier League.

Fergie predicts top four dog fight

Manchester United boss Sir Alex FergusonManchester United are 12/5 to win the Premier League title this season but Sir Alex Ferguson is predicting a tough campaign and says there will be a dog fight just to make it into the top four.

The so-called big four of United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have dominated proceedings for a long time but that was shattered last season when Tottenham broke into the Champions League places at the expense of Liverpool.

This season will be even more competitive as Manchester City have been spending like it is going out of fashion and anything other than a top four finish will be deemed a failure.

It means everyone is fighting for their lives and even though United are nailed on at 1/20 to finish in the Champions League, it looks like it will be tight and they may find themselves looking over their shoulders now and then.

Ferguson admits it will be tougher than ever following the emergence of City, who are 11/2 to win the title, while Everton and Aston Villa are also clubs who will be pushing all the way.

Gone are the times when a team only lost a maximum of four games when winning the title and Ferguson is well aware that no game is easy these days.

“Things definitely changed last season – it was a different league altogether compared to what we’d seen before,” said Ferguson. “The top four found it difficult and dropped points in games they wouldn’t have expected to.

“That’s an indication of the improvement made by other teams, and I think there’ll be a bit of a dogfight for the top four places this season.

“We all have to be aware of the threats from the likes of Villa, Everton, Tottenham and Manchester City – they’ll all be challenging to get into that top four.”

Chelsea are 13/8 favourites for the title but United showed at the weekend even without the addition of any new players they are the team that will run Carlo Ancelotti’s men all the way.

Parreira ready for the fight

South Africa coach Carlos Alberto Parreira says he is on a high as he enters the week when his team kicks off the World Cup (South Africa 4/11 to exit at the group stage).

A 1-0 win for Bafana Bafana over Denmark was the perfect tonic for the side as they approach the first Group A fixture against Mexico at Soccer City.

Parreira said:  “Everybody has to respect us. We are ready to fight. We respect everybody, but they must also respect us. We will take every game as a final. We will fight in every game.”

He added: “I think the team showed that we are ready for the competition – we are ready for the World Cup. The team is ready and they proved it against Denmark.

“With our preparations, it shows that the path we took was the right one. What will happen at the World Cup we don’t know but the team is ready for the World Cup.”

Parreira was also buoyed by the overwhelming support Bafana received from the packed Lucas Moripe stadium in Atteridgeville.

He said: “I read in one newspaper and they said ’spectators fall in love again with Bafana’, this is good. We have the support… they have been supporting us in the games we have been playing, the one against Thailand and Colombia they were there in big numbers blowing the vuvuzelas. They give the team confidence,” he said.

The win against Denmark was the perfect way to end the warm-up sequence for the World Cup, said Parreira.

“A win is a win, but this one was a special one for us, because it was a win against a very, very good team.

“Denmark is a very strong team and five of their players have around 80 caps for their national team and that’s why I was very happy to see the boys win.

“They won against very tough opponents and I’m happy about that,” said the 67-year-old.

The coach also said the visit to former president Nelson Mandela on Thursday worked and brought with it the ‘Madiba Magic’ to the team.

“He didn’t make any speech, but his presence is so inspiring for the team and the country. It was so emotional to see him there and everyone was so happy. I’m sure it helps the team a lot when we play,” said Parreira.

Chelsea ready to fight for star

Chelsea midfielder Joe ColeChelsea assistant manager Ray Wilkins says the Blues (13/8 2010/2011 Premier League champions) are desperate to try and keep Joe Cole at Stamford Bridge.

The 28-year-old is set to see his contract expire with the west London outfit at the end of June and there are plenty of clubs interested in securing his services should he fail to negotiate a new deal with Chelsea.

The likes of Manchester United, West Ham, Tottenham and Arsenal have all been linked with a move for the England (13/2 to win the World Cup) international, who is stalling over signing a new contract due to money issues.

Cole allegedly wants to see his weekly pay rise from £80,000 to £100,000, a sum Chelsea are unwilling to match.

It seems unlikely that any of the other clubs believed to be interested in Cole would be prepared to match his wage demands and as such he may have to settle for what the Blues are offering.

However, having been used sparingly by manager Carlo Ancelotti last season, Cole might see his future lying elsewhere.

Manchester United (2/1 2010/11 Premier League champions) have long been credited with an interest in the former West Ham (1500/1) youngster, although it could cost them a bit to persuade him to move out of London.

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has said he thought the club couldn’t afford Cole’s wage demands, and West Ham would appear to be in a similar boat with their financial troubles.

Arsenal looks the most likely destination for Cole and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has previously admitted the proposition of signing Cole was “interesting”.

The north London club are desperate to strengthen their side ahead of the new season having failed to claim any silverware since their 2005 FA Cup success.

With captain Cesc Fabregas reportedly on the verge of leaving, Wenger could be handed a big transfer budget to try and replace the Spaniard, with Cole a possible candidate to try and fill the void left by Fabergas.

However, any ideas Arsenal have about signing the playmaker could be stopped in their tracks following Wilkins’ comments.

He says the Blues are still fighting to keep Cole and would be very happy to see him stay at Stamford Bridge.

“We’ve obviously been in dialogue with Joe for months now and it’s pretty evident that Carlo and myself would love Joe to stay but it’s down now to the club to see what we can do,” said Wilkins.

“We sincerely hope Joe stays with us – he’s a smashing guy and he’s a wonderful footballer so we’ll keep our fingers crossed.”

‘Messi’ Barcelona approach for Fabregas: Arsenal to fight it?

post thumbnail

Cesc Fabregas 300x199 Messi Barcelona approach for Fabregas: Arsenal to fight it? Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has publically expressed his desire to fend off Barcelona and keep Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates Stadium, saying that the club will fight tooth and nail to keep their captain.

You Can Bet on Football Now – World Cup Odds

Hill-Wood has said that the club are so adamant that Fabregas’ future lies at the North London club that the board have refused to even discuss a fee that would be needed to tempt them to sell.

La Liga champions Barcelona have made no secret of the fact that they want to sign the 23-year-old and they believe that the midfielder’s desire to play for the Catalan outfit will be the deciding factor in any move.

Speculation about Fabregas has been the talk of the back pages in both England and Spain in recent weeks and Hill-Wood has described Barcelona’s tactics of trying to tempt the player via the Spanish media as “a funny way of doing business.”

You Can Bet on Football Now

The Spanish sports media is renowned for creating high-profile transfer speculation among Europe’s elite players, but this is one occasion when they may be justified.

Fabregas has publically acknowledged his desire to return the club he supports and progressed through the youth system as a boy.

Barcelona’s well documented interest in the Spain international could be made official today if they make their predicted initial bid of £30m – a figure that will do little to prise Fabregas away as Arsenal are thought to value their captain at around £50m.
