WATCH: Graham Hunter expertly analyse an intriguing El Clasico and give a tasty 7/1 double

11 games into the La Liga season and already we’re looking at an El Clasico meeting with real implications for who will prevail in the presumed two and a half horse race. Rafa Benitez leads Real into the massive clash under massive pressure. Defeat to Sevilla before the international break means Real would fall six points behind with defeat in this. As knee-jerk and ridiculous as it seems, his job could depend on events on Saturday night.

(function(doc, ppScript, id) {var js, ppCSS, ppJs = doc.getElementsByTagName(ppScript)[0], ppBaseUrl = window.location.protocol + “//blogwidget.paddypower.mobi”, ppDonorhead = document.getElementsByTagName(“head”)[0];if (doc.getElementById(id)) return;js = doc.createElement(ppScript);js.id = id; js.src = ppBaseUrl + “/scripts/widget.js”; ppJs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, ppJs);ppCSS = doc.createElement(“link”);ppCSS.rel = “stylesheet”;ppCSS.href = ppBaseUrl + “/styles/widget.css”; ppDonorhead.appendChild(ppCSS);}(document, “script”, “pp-blogwidget”));
To expand on some of the stats provided by Graham in the video:

  • There hasn’t been an El Clasico draw in seven meetings. The last came in the Copa Del Rey in January 2013.
  • If it’s a draw, it’s very likely to be of the score variety. All nine of their most recent stalemates have been score draws. It’s for the draw and both teams to score.
  • The last El Clasico scoreless draw came in November 2002. Patrick Kluivert was leading the line for Barca while for Real, Steve McManaman came on for about the last half an hour.

(function(doc, ppScript, id) {var js, ppCSS, ppJs = doc.getElementsByTagName(ppScript)[0], ppBaseUrl = window.location.protocol + “//blogwidget.paddypower.mobi”, ppDonorhead = document.getElementsByTagName(“head”)[0];if (doc.getElementById(id)) return;js = doc.createElement(ppScript);js.id = id; js.src = ppBaseUrl + “/scripts/widget.js”; ppJs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, ppJs);ppCSS = doc.createElement(“link”);ppCSS.rel = “stylesheet”;ppCSS.href = ppBaseUrl + “/styles/widget.css”; ppDonorhead.appendChild(ppCSS);}(document, “script”, “pp-blogwidget”));

It’s not all about El Clasico however. It mainly is, but Graham also fancies the for Athletic Bilbao to claim a rare away win at Granada. Here are some of the keys stats.

  • Athletic Bilbao are unbeaten in seven games in all competitions, winning the last five on the bounce
  • Granada haven’t won in nine La Liga games.
  • In addition to his tidy haul against Granada, has scored three goals in his last six appearances in all competitions.

Three to watch in 2012

With a big footballing year ahead, we look at three of the names that could have a big say in the domestic and international game in 2012. As the Premier League, Champions League and Euro 2012 issues get resolved, this trio could play a big role.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The Arsenal youngster is slowly starting to make an impact at the Emirates following his summer move from Southampton. With the Gunners still fighting on three fronts, Oxlade-Chamberlain could find himself coming to the fore, especially if Arsenal (6/5 Top Four Finish) suffer key injuries.

The inconsistent form of Theo Walcott is another factor which could lead to more game-time for the winger, who has scored twice in five appearances this season. The 18-year-old certainly looks the part and may even be an outside bet to make the England squad for Euro 2012 (England 11/8 Group D Winners), should Arsenal enjoy a some trophy success.

Arsene Wenger has already alluded to the fact that Oxlade-Chamberlain has impressed him and although normally wary to over-play his teenage stars, the Frenchman could be tempted to use his blistering pace and freshness in key games towards the end of the season.

Mario Balotelli

Love him or hate him, you can’t ignore Mario Balotelli. Opinion is divided as to whether he is a liability or a genius, with Roberto Mancini holding the answer.

The City boss is probably the only current manager able to get the best out of the striker, having worked with him before at Inter Milan. With Carlos Tevez set to leave in January and City (8/13 Premier League Outright) unlikely to splash the cash again in the New Year, Balotelli could have a big say in the destination of the Premier League title.

On the plus side, his goals and performances in recent months have been outstanding. He shone in the 6-1 win at rivals United and his cheeky finish against Norwich summed up his ability. The negatives are there to see as well though, with his daft sending off at Liverpool almost costing his team.

The 21-year-old is a likely inclusion in the Italy squad (14/1 Tournament Winner) for the European Championship and he will be flying should he have already collected a Premier League winners medal.

Connor Wickham

The young striker could yet hold the key to Sunderland’s top flight survival, with Martin O’Neill selecting him for his first two games as manager before injury struck. The capture from Ipswich was used sparingly during the reign of Steve Bruce and that now looks an unwise move.

Bruce attempted to ease Wickham into Premier League life, but with a lack of attacking options, the striker should have been starting sooner for the Black Cats (13/2 to be relegated). The 18-year-old has already impressed for England Under-21’s and in brief glimpses, has suggested that he can repay the £8million that Sunderland paid for him.

Five deadline-day movers to watch

drenthePremier League clubs across the country once again left it late to finalise deals on deadline day. A number of notable players moved clubs on that dramatic final day, but who will fare best? Here are five that could prove to be inspired.

Mikel Arteta Everton – Arsenal £10million

In perhaps the most dramatic move of the day, Mikel Arteta’s move to the Emirates was off at 7pm on Wednesday evening. However, lured by the opportunity to play Champions League football, the Spaniard resurrected the deal and it went through with minutes to spare.

He will add badly-needed creativity to a Gunners side still reeling from the double departure of Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas, as well as the 8-2 mauling by Manchester United.

Arsenal’s style should suit the 29-year-old, who appears determined to make the most of the move – so much so that he took a reported £20,000 a-week pay-cut to force the transfer through. It could well be an inspired signing by Arsene Wenger (Arsenal 28/1 Premier League outright).

Royston Drenthe Real Madrid to Everton – season-long loan

While much of the talk around Goodison Park was about outgoings, there were some new arrivals for the Toffees, the most notable being Dutch winger Royston Drenthe.

The former Feyenoord winger was player of the tournament at the 2007 European Under-21 Championships, with his displays earning him a big money move to Real Madrid.

However, his time at the Bernabéu soon turned sour and a loss of confidence and form saw him shipped off to Hercules on-loan for the 2010-11 season.

Now, Drenthe finds himself at yet another club trying to replicate his blistering form of a few years ago. David Moyes has a track record of getting the best out of under-performing players and if he can help Drenthe get back to his best, Everton could have quite a player on their hands (Everton 20/1 top four finish).

Bryan Ruiz Twente to Fulham – £10.6million

Despite costing in excess of £10million, Fulham’s latest striking capture appeared to slip under the radar on deadline day. He won’t stay quiet for long, though, as the Cottagers have acquired a powerful striker with a keen eye for goal.

He hit 24 goals for the Eredivisie outfit in the 2009/10 season, helping them to their first-ever Dutch title. A total of 36 goals in 61 games, as well as nine goals for his country Costa Rica, means we could be hearing a lot more of Bryan Ruiz this season.

Craig Bellamy Man City to Liverpool – free

In one of the more eye-opening moves on deadline day, Man City outcast Craig Bellamy rejoined Liverpool four years after departing Anfield for West Ham.

Kenny Dalglish has spent in excess of £100million since returning to the club last January with the likes of Andy Carroll, Charlie Adam, Luis Suarez and Jordan Henderson all joining the Scot’s Anfield revolution.

However, Bellamy – on a free transfer – could be his shrewdest move yet. The Welshman will add pace, experience and guile to the Liverpool attack. He also perhaps has a point to prove after being left out in the cold at Manchester City and unfinished business at Anfield (Liverpool 5/1 top two finish).

Bellamy has never been far away from the headlines during his eventful career and Liverpool will be hoping he will be making them for all the right reasons this season.

Peter Crouch Tottenham to Stoke – £10million

Stoke City have earned an unfair reputation for being overly-aggressive and direct since earning promotion to the Premier League in 2008. However, boss Tony Pulis deserves huge credit for establishing the Potters as a Premier League force without spending huge money.

After reaching the FA Cup final last season the supporters are eagerly hoping that the club can push on, and the signing of Peter Crouch could help them do that (Stoke 33/1 to win the FA Cup).

The 30-year-old is an established top-flight striker, having had spells with Aston Villa, Portsmouth, Southampton and Liverpool. He also has an impressive record at international level, netting 22 goals in 42 England games.

Expect him to profit from the excellent delivery from wingers Matthew Etherington and Jermaine Pennant this season.

Five strikers to watch

With the Premier League season kicking off this weekend, there is sure to be a host of goals during the 2011/12 season, but who will be the player to find the back of the net the most?

Javier Hernandez – Manchester United

The diminutive Mexico international must be on every Premier League defender’s mind heading into the new season.

Hernandez was arguably the signing of the season in the last campaign and it didn’t take him long to find his feet in the Premier League.

Hernandez bagged 13 goals in 15 appearances for the Red Devils last season, and that might explain why he is valued at 17/2 to be the top goalscorer this season.

If Hernandez stays injury-free for the campaign then it will take a pretty impressive player to beat out-score him. Maybe team-mate Wayne Rooney could be the man at 8/1 and the current favourite?

Fernando Torres – Chelsea

The out-of-sorts £50million striker looks set to miss Chelsea’s opening game of the season due to an injury he picked up on international duty for Spain on Wednesday night.

With only one goal in 18 competitive matches for the Blues, you could think that at 9/1 the value on the Spaniard is pretty poor.

However, if Torres can get back to anywhere near the form he enjoyed at Liverpool before his incomprehensible dip in form at the 2010 World Cup,  he may be unstoppable.

Could the arrival of new boss Andre Villas-Boas at Stamford Bridge reinvigorate El Nino?

Edin Dzeko – Manchester City

Manchester City certainly have forwards in abundance at Eastlands, and Roberto Mancini will be hoping that wantaway skipper Carlos Tevez remains to score the goals we all know he is capable of getting.

But with Tevez so unsettled and the 20-year-old Mario Balotelli still struggling to control his temperament, the £27million Bosnian Dzeko may have to step up to the plate.

Despite struggling since his move back in January, Dzeko has now had half a season to adapt to the pace of the Premier League.

With the blue half of Manchester certain to mount a serious title bid this season, why not have a punt at 20/1?

Adel Taarabt – QPR

Not technically a striker, the mercurial Moroccan star caused such waves with his stunning performance in the Championship last season, scoring 19 goals for Rangers as they won promotion back to the Premier League.

Neil Warnock will certainly be relying on Taraabt to supply the goals at Loftus Road which will help consolidate their position in the top flight.

At 80/1, Taraabt looks like a great player to back to outscore any other player this season.

We know he has the raw talent but the big question will be whether or not he can do it in the Premier League?

Asamoah Gyan – Sunderland

With Darren Bent’s £26million departure to Aston Villa midway through last season, Sunderland fans could have been forgiven for being upset by losing their guaranteed scorer.

However, there is a new kid on the block and Ghana international Gyan was superb in his first season as a Premier League striker.

Despite fears that he would be slow to adapt, the player managed to net an impressive 10 goals in 20 league appearances.

With Danny Welbeck back at Manchester United, Gyan will lead the line this season for the Black Cats.

At 40/1 Gyan is possibly the best value for a player that knows exactly where the back of the net is.

The big question is: will his team-mates be able to give him the service to improve on his tally for his second season in the Premier League?

5 Championship players to watch

Bet on the ChampionshipAfter the opening weekend of the Championship season, punters will already have made notes on which teams look like promotion and relegation candidates. We’ve decided to take a look at some of the players who could have a big season in the English second tier.

1) Michael Chopra (Ipswich)

A brace on his debut for Ipswich (12/1 Championship Outright) showed once again that the former Newcastle frontman is one of the best finishers in the division. The 27-year-old has been a prolific goalscorer at this level, consistently finding his name at the top of the scoring charts.

A transfer fee of £1.5million looks a good deal for a proven goal poacher and the Tractorboys indicated that they could be a threat this season with an impressive 3-0 success at Bristol City on the opening day. Paul Jewell’s men now have back-to-back home league fixtures and will have their sights set on an unbeaten August.

2) Matt Mills (Leicester)

The Foxes have spent big this summer with a number of new faces arriving at the club, but Matt Mills looks the best of the arrivals. The former Reading centre-back made an instant impact in the opening day win at Coventry, with Leicester (7/2f for promotion) keeping an impressive clean sheet and limiting the Sky Blues to half chances.

With many Championship teams looking leaky at the back, a solid defensive foundation could prove vital in Leicester’s push for the Premier League.

3) Luke Varney (Portsmouth)

A goal on his debut highlighted Varney’s likely importance to Pompey this season, with the forward salvaging a late draw at Middlesbrough. The ex-Crewe man showed his quality in the top flight whilst on loan at Blackpool last term and he will surely cause defences problems this season.

Steve Cotterill was delighted with the £750,000 capture of Varney and the 28-year-old could prove a crucial addition to a squad that may challenge for a play-off spot.

4) Adam Lallana (Southampton)

The England Under-21 international is looking to take the next step in his career and the way he tore into Leeds on the opening day suggests he will be a star of the Championship this term.

Lallana scored the second goal in a 3-1 success and with fears that Alex Chamberlain may leave in the summer transfer window, he could have a major role to play for the Saints.

5) Anthony Gerrard (Cardiff)

The Liverpudlian has been given a second chance at Cardiff (14/1 Championship Outright) following the arrival of Malky Mackay and he has the desire to play at the top level. The cousin of Liverpool star Steven spent much of last season on loan at Hull City, after falling out of favour under Dave Jones.

The 25-year-old showed in his time with the Tigers that he is commanding at this level and should be key for Cardiff this season. Gerrard and co started solidly as well with a 0-1 win at West Ham on Sunday.

Five young footballers to watch in 2011

Connor Wickham – Ipswich

Only 17 years old, Wickham signed his first professional contract earlier this year and has quickly started fulfilling the potential in the Championship (11/10f QPR Outright)  many scouts and pundits had seen in him.

His height of 6ft 3in make him a powerful force in the air and is as strong as an ox, despite his young age, making him very hard to knock off the ball.

Manchester United have taken a special interest in Wickham, though they might get no dispensation from Old Trafford legend Roy Keane when making any enquiry about him.

Wickham became the youngest player to make a senior appearance for the club when he came on as a substitute against Doncaster Rovers in April at 16 years and 11 days, breaking Jason Dozzell’s record.

Wickham has made an impact at international level, scoring the winning goal for England in the UEFA European U17 Championship final.

He has already played 43 times for Ipswich, scoring four goals, and is valued at £10million by Keane, who has already rejected an £8m bid from Tottenham.

Jack Wilshere – Arsenal

Wilshere is a product of the Arsenal Academy who has quickly risen from playing youth football to being a valuable member of Arsene Wenger’s first team squad (9/2 to win 2010-11 Premier League title).

He was a star of Arsenal’s 2009 FA Youth Cup success, scoring in both the semi-final and final, but by the time those games came around he had already made his first team bow and impressed.

He was Arsenal’s youngest ever debutant at 16 years 256 days, beating Cesc Fabregas’ record, and six days later scored his first goal for the Gunners in the 6-0 Carling Cup win over Sheffield United.

Even before he had signed his first professional contract he had played in the Champions League, making his debut against Dynamo Kiev.

This season has been in many ways his breakthrough campaign, as he made his first start against Liverpool in August and has continued to see regular action. He was Arsenal’s Player of the Month for September and scored in the Champions League against Shakhtar Donetsk.

Adept at dribbling and with a powerful shot, 18-year-old Wilshere has made his England debut this season, coming on as a substitute against Hungary in August.

Danny Welbeck – Sunderland

Welbeck has ended the year well, endearing himself to the Sunderland fans with impressive performances including a goal to earn the 1-0 win over Bolton.

The 20-year-old is on loan at the Stadium of Light from Manchester United, his home-town team, who he joined as a junior in 2005.

He made his competitive bow for United in September 2008 in the 3-1 Carling Cup win over Middlesbrough, and his Premier League debut came two months later, as a substitute against Stoke City. He marked the occasion with a memorable 30-yard curling shot into the top corner as United won 5-0.

Welbeck can be used as a wideman or a striker, and has great pace allied to strength and ability with both feet.

He signed a new four-year contract with United last December, assuring him that he was very much part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s plans for the future despite the Red Devils’ boss then sending him out on loan to Preston.

Welbeck scored two in eight games for North End before returning early from his loan spell due to injury, and after he recovered Steve Bruce was quick to snap him up on a season-long loan.

He starred with a goal in the 3-0 away win at Chelsea, and bagged both Sunderland (9/2 Top Six Finish) goals in a 2-2 draw at home to Everton next time out.

He has made something of an international impact since making his debut for England Under-21 in February 2009, and bagged a brace in England’s 3-0 win over Lithuania in September.

Andy Carroll – Newcastle

Carroll is still only 21, but its well over four years since the Newcastle United faithful first took him to their hearts when he became the Magpies’ youngest player to appear in Europe, during a UEFA Cup tie against Palermo in November 2006.

Even at that age he had formidable presence, able to hold off defenders using his strength and pace, and experience has only added to his abilities.

He made his Premier League bow in February 2007, and after a six-month loan spell with Preston, he returned to St James’ Park determined to claim a regular starting spot.

Indeed, the club’s decision to offer him a new four-year contract was testament to the fact that they rated him highly, and after Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship he took his chance with both hands.

He set up a superb partnership with Peter Lovenkrands which accounted for more than half the club’s goals in 2010, and finished as the club’s top scorer with 19 goals in all competitions.

Carroll scored his first career hat-trick against Aston Villa in the Premier League in August, and captained Newcastle for the first time the next month against Manchester City (Carroll 9/1 to be Premier League top scorer).

His performances for Newcastle earned him a call-up for the England friendly against France in November, and England boss Fabio Capello has talked of wanting Carroll up front as Wayne Rooney’s partner in the future.

Marc Albrighton – Aston Villa

Not given a chance during Martin O’Neill’s time in charge at Villa Park, Albrighton has grabbed his opportunity with both hands since Gerrard Houllier took over.

He has excellent pace and dribbling ability, together with the vision to be able to pick out players who have given themselves a yard of space in the box.

An outstanding prospect for England, he is never afraid to take the responsibility of shooting if a chance presents itself.

Albrighton made his competitive debut in the UEFA Cup tie at CSKA Moscow in February 2009, but it has been this season when his star has risen – he made his first Premier League start against West Ham on August 14, setting up two goals.

He scored his first Villa (11/2 Top Six Finish) goal against Spurs in October, and was rewarded with a new contract offer for the next four years.

Albrighton has bounced back well after being out of the side following an appendix operation, and has now scored three goals in 16 games.
