Deals hot up as clubs chase the dream

The transfer window closes in 12 days’ time and with several big moves already sealed but plenty more expected – including the eagerly-awaited next destination of Robbie Keane – we assess how January’s dealings may help – or hinder – Premier League teams in the second half of the season.

The shock move of the month so far was completed on Tuesday when Darren Bent joined Aston Villa in a record £18million switch from Sunderland as Gerard Houllier attempts to put the brakes on his side’s slide into a relegation battle.

No doubt Bent will find the goals Villa have been missing and, although he is possibly a tad over-priced, it seems like good business by Randy Lerner.

Villa’s aim will not only be to avoid the drop but to also push on and look for European qualification now that Bent is on board. They are a much better side than their current position of 17th suggests and don’t bet against them securing a top-six finish (16/1) if the likes of Marc Albrighton, Stewart Downing, Ashley Young and Gabby Agbonlahor all gel in what’s left of the campaign.

Man City’s huge £27m purchase of Edin Dzeko should again ensure the Eastlands outfit are the biggest spenders of the month. No surprise there, then.

But what may come as a surprise to some is just how well-placed Roberto Mancini’s side are in the title race heading into February. City are level on points with local rivals United at the top – albeit after playing two games more – but may just have the squad now to go on and win the Premier League (6/1), with a fearsome collection of attacking talent that includes David Silva, Mario Balotelli, Dzeko, James Milner, Adam Johnson and Carlos Tevez.

Spurs fans will be looking forward to the rest of the season, too, following the capture of Steven Pienaar from Everton – an astute £3million purchase by Harry Redknapp as he looks to keep his squad ticking over into the final months of the season.

A second-successive top-four finish looks nigh-on nailed on (13/8) for the north Londoners now, with the possibility of a few more quality arrivals, knowing Harry, in the days that remain this month that would surely only add to their chances of sneaking into the title race.

Liverpool interim boss Kenny Dalglish has identified targets to bolster his underperforming squad this month but time appears to be running out at Anfield as the Reds seem no closer to tying up any deals of note this month.

A serious injection of top-class talent is required at Anfield and, if Kenny can lure striker Luis Suarez from Ajax, a decent winger and a couple of defenders, then maybe Liverpool can push for a Euro berth as well (Top 6 Finish – 2/1). If not, a top-ten finish  is about the best Fernando Torres, Steven Gerrard and co can hope for.

Elsewhere, there have been some minor, if no less astute, deals done by clubs hoping to preserve their top-flight status in 2011. Birmingham are no strangers to splashing the cash and expect Alex McLeish to bring in at least one major signing to add to the loan capture of David Bentley from Spurs, while Stoke and Newcastle have tied up permanent deals for impressive on-loan pair Jermain Pennant and Hatem Ben Arfa respectively.

Blackburn have money to spend as their ambitious owners want to lure more big names, to follow Roque Santa Cruz, over to Ewood Park while Fulham boss Mark Hughes believes winger Shaun Wright-Phillips is the man to get the Cottagers moving up the table.

The speculation rumour mill is gearing itself up for overdrive in the next fortnight so expect more deals, some shocks and some wholly predicted transfers to keep you ‘entertained’ throughout the rest of the month as teams look for that added bit of spark or quality to give them a chance to dream of fourth – or maybe just 17th – in the Premier League. Just don’t expect too much from Keane, wherever he goes!

Dream on for FA Cup minnows

Football Conference North minnows Vauxhall Motors can make their name in this year’s FA Cup competition by completing a shock success against League One Hartlepool United (7/2 Home Win 90 Minutes) on Tuesday.

The Motormen survived a barrage of pressure at Victoria Park to earn a goalless draw in their first round encounter and will now look to use home advantage to see off Mick Wadsworth’s men at Rivacre Park.

Pools arrive on the back of an impressive 3-1 home win against League One leaders Brighton on Saturday but Vauxhall Motors could sneak through after extra time (5/2 the draw 90 Minutes).

Staying with Brighton they face a tricky test at Conference South outfit Woking in their replay following a goalless draw at the Withdean Stadium on November 6.

Both sides had their chances in the first game, but Seagulls boss Gus Poyet will demand the right response to their defeat at Hartlepool and they should come through the tie with a win (Brighton 8/13 90 Minutes).

In another replay which sees a non-league side aim to dispose of a bigger boy from the Football League you get the feeling Conference South strugglers Dartford missed their opportunity to claim the scalp of League Two high-fliers Port Vale when John McCombe’s late effort cancelled out Darts skipper Elliott Bradbrook’s opener.

Darts boss Tommy Burman admitted it was the best his side had played all season against Vale, who will use their home advantage to progress to round two with ease (7/1 Port Vale 3-0 Correct Score).

The Galpharm Stadium sees fifth-placed League One outfit Huddersfield look to bounce back from Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Oldham by seeing off Conference Premier side Cambridge United after being held to a 0-0 draw in the initial tie.

Lee Clark’s Terriers were guilty of spurning several chances in that game and it is hard to believe they will let the U’s off the hook for a second time on Tuesday evening (Huddesfield 2/7 to win in 90 Minutes).

Conference Premier side Fleetwood Town were denied a place in the second round for the second time in their history when Walsall’s veteran goalkeeper Jimmy Walker produced a magnificent performance to keep the 10-man Saddlers in the initial tie after Ryan McGivern was sent off.

Fleetwood’s Steve McNulty also missed a penalty in that game which ended 1-1.

And, while the feeling is that Fleetwood missed their opportunity, there is a good chance they could pose a real threat in the replay at the Banks’ Stadium (3/1 Fleetwood to win 90 Minutes), while there should be goals in the encounter (3/4 Yes Both Teams To Score).

Capello ends Beckham dream

David Beckham’s dreams of appearing at another major tournament finals appear to be over after England coach Fabio Capello made it clear that he will not pick the former captain again (England 9/1 – Euro 2012 outright).

Having initially been ditched by Steve McClaren following the 2006 World Cup, the former Manchester United star bounced back to reclaim his place in the squad and looked set to play in his fourth consecutive World Cup finals this summer.

However, the LA Galaxy star missed the chance to make history when he suffered an Achilles injury prior to the South Africa tournament.

Despite the severity of the injury, the 35-year-old has always maintained that he would return for both club and country and would never retire from international football.

He had hoped to play some part in England’s Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, with three matches scheduled to take place before the end of the year, but Capello let slip in an interview prior to Wednesday’s 2-1 friendly victory over Hungary that Beckham would no longer be part of the national set-up but may play in a farewell match before Christmas (England 2/7 – to win Group G).

“I hope when David is okay he can play here the last game at Wembley in a friendly to say goodbye and thank you very much to the crowd,” he said. “I won’t be picking him for any more competitive matches.

“David is a fantastic player, he was really important, but we have to see the new players for the future because the age is important for a lot of people, not only for David.”

Beckham won 115 caps for his country and played at the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups, as well as at Euro 2000 and 2004 and he skippered the national side on 58 occasions.

He polarized opinion within the media, with many pundits praising his commitment and ability to score from dead-ball situations and fire accurate 50-yard passes, while others felt he was one-dimensional and lacked the necessary pace to create a real impact out wide.

But his enthusiasm for the England team could never be called into question and Capello even allowed him to sit in the dug-out during the World Cup to offer support to his former team-mates.

The player’s agent responded to the news by stating that Beckham would still be available for England and has not officially retired from international football but it does appear that November’s friendly at Wembley will be the last time he is seen in an England shirt.

Kuyt’s World Cup dream

Dirk Kuyt is confident Holland are finally about to reach the end of their long journey to World Cup glory (5/4 to win the tournament outright).

Beaten finalists in 1974 and 1978, the Dutch get their third shot at football’s greatest prize at Soccer City on Sunday when they will tackle either Germany or Spain following Tuesday night’s 3-2 defeat of Uruguay.

And Kuyt is determined to ensure it is third time lucky for the ‘Oranje’.

“After a long journey we are in the final,” said the Liverpool star.

“We are so close to writing history. This is the third time we have reached the final. Now we have to win it.”

Kuyt admitted it was difficult to put his emotions into words at the final whistle.

Holland had gone in front thanks to a blistering strike from captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst, only to be pegged back by Diego Forlan just before half-time.

For a decent period in the second half, the South Americans looked the more likely winners.

However, just as it appeared there was no way through for the Dutch, Wesley Sneijder’s incredible year took another twist when he threaded a shot through a crowd of bodies and into the Uruguay net.

Three minutes later, Kuyt crossed for Arjen Robben, whose precise header also went in off the post, and Holland were through.

“What has happened is unbelievable. It is a bit unreal,” said Kuyt.

“We felt before the tournament we had the quality in the team to win it but now it is an incredible feeling.”

Barry’s American dream is over

Gareth Barry has confirmed he has been told by coach Fabio Capello he will not be involved when England begin their quest to end a 44-year wait for World Cup glory against USA on Saturday (4/9 England, 16/5 draw, 13/2 USA – totesport match betting).

The Rustenburg opener comes too soon for the fit-again Manchester City midfielder, who is short of match sharpness given that he has only just returned to light training following a serious ankle injury towards the end of the domestic season.

England coach Capello had always had in mind the deadline of June 13 for former Aston Villa favourite Barry to step up his recovery, so confirmation that the 29-year-old will not feature against Bob Bradley’s men comes as a surprise.

Barry will intensify his training as of Tuesday in his attempts to get match fit for the second Group C game against Algeria, which takes place in Cape Town on June 18 (1/4 England, 4/1 draw, 8/1 Algeria – match betting).

“I’ve been told I’m not playing against USA to give me more time,” Barry told www.newsoftheworld.co.uk. “I’ll be back in full training with the team from tomorrow.”

The news means that Capello is likely to stick with Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in central midfield, while Joe Cole is almost certain to be given the nod on the problematic left-hand side of the England engine room.

A clear indication was given when the trio started Monday afternoon’s 3-0 practice match win against the Platinum Stars.

Capello will be keen to get Barry involved having bent his own rules to accommodate the Eastlands star.

The Italian had long held the view that he would only take match-fit and in-form players to South Africa, but Barry has not played a competitive fixture since he damaged ankle ligaments at the beginning of May.

Tottenham hopeful Jermain Defoe gave the Three Lions an interval lead against the local South African side at Moruleng Stadium on Monday, before Cole and Wayne Rooney made sure of the friendly win.

Forlan Wrecks Fulham Europa Cup Dream

post thumbnail

europa league 300x214 Forlan Wrecks Fulham Europa Cup DreamThe Europa League Final proved to be one match too far in Fulham’s long season, Diego Forlan’s second strike of the match won the game with five minutes of extra time to go.

Though the Cottagers put in a typically disciplined performance Atletico Madrid always carried more threat in the contest. With Bobby Zamora hampered by his Achilles injury, Fulham just couldn’t put their Spanish opponents under enough pressure at the back.

Atletico’s much vaunted strikers were the difference. Forlan scored the goals but his partner Sergio Aguero took the eye for his quick feet and darting runs, which left Fulham chasing shadows.

It is testimony to Roy Hodgson’s organisational skills that his players were able to cope. In fact, there was a period in the second half of normal time when Fulham appeared to be the side most likely to win.

Fulham’s equalising goal was typical of their season as Simon Davies produced a great volley from one of the few attacks that penetrated the Atletico box. Throughout their campaign, Fulham have taken every chance offered and lived on scraps- the final was no different.

Fulham’s goal came when then Spanish team were pushing on and looked capable of adding a second to Forlan’s poacher’s strike. The equaliser set them back and it wasn’t until midway through the second period that they started to put Fulham under concerted pressure again.

During the second half of normal time Hodgson had to withdraw Zamora and Damian Duff, probably his two best creative talents. The introduction of Clint Dempsey and Erik Nevland offered more running and graft but the ball failed to stick up front.

Atletico had more of the ball in extra time and though Fulham defended well there was always the feeling that the Madrid team would get one more gilt-edged chance.

Aguero provided it by besting Aaron Hughes and delivering a wicked ball across the six yard box. That man Forlan ghosted into the right place again and applied a delicate flick though the legs of his marker ands past Mark Schwarzer.

It was too late for a tired side to force yet another improbably comeback and at least the final wasn’t settled on the dreaded penalties. Fulham were always in the contest but Atletico were the better side and deserved their victory.

Kuranyi told Germany dream is over

Germany coach Joachim Low has made the surprise decision to announce he will not be taking Kevin Kuranyi to the World Cup this summer – over a month before the showpiece tournament starts (14/1 Germany – World Cup outright).

Low revealed he contacted the Schalke goal-getter on Monday to inform him he will not be going to South Africa.

Kuranyi has been overlooked by Low ever since stormed out of the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund before the final whistle after being omitted from the match-day squad for the qualifier against Russia in October 2008.

However, his 18 Bundesliga goals for the Royal Blues this season have led to a clamour for his recall to the national side.

Germany icon Franz Beckenbauer urged Low to make the peace with the Brazil-born forward to give ‘Die Mannschaft’ best possible chance of winning football’s biggest international prize for the fourth time.

However, Low said a clash of personalities had nothing to do with his decision to omit the free-scoring 28-year-old.

“The disciplinary incident in October 2008 was not a consideration recently,” Low said in a press release from the German Football Association (DFB).

“It would have been no problem for us to give him a new chance in the national team.

“However, after consideration among our coaching staff we came to the conclusion that we had other ideas, tactically and personnel-wise, for the composition of the World Cup squad.

“This I discussed today frankly with Kevin, who has had a strong season and whom I think is a player of sound character.”

The decision means three-time winners Germany must pin their hopes on the likes of Miroslav Klose and Mario Gomez of Bayern Munich and Stefan Kiessling of Bayer Leverkusen.

Bayern pair Klose and Gomez have scored 10 and three league goals respectively, while Kiessling has fared better than Kuranyi with 21.

Kuranyi said he was bitterly disappointed by Low’s decision but wished the national team every success this summer.

“Like every footballer, I dreamed from when I was a little boy of being able to play in a World Cup,” said the striker, who also missed out on a place in Jurgen Klinsmann’s squad for the 2006 tournament.

“This dream has now burst for a second time.

“Therefore it is clear that this decision makes me very sad.”

Germany kick off their World Cup Group D campaign against Australia in Durban on June 13 (8/15 Germany 13/5 draw 9/2 Australia – match betting).

Roma Must Beat Parma to Keep Scuddeto Dream Alive

post thumbnail

inter roma Roma Must Beat Parma to Keep Scuddeto Dream AliveA surprise defeat at home to Sampdoria last weekend saw Roma hand Inter Milan the initiative in the title race and nothing but a win will do the Roman side this Saturday against Parma ahead of next week’s crunch showdown with Inter at the San Siro.

Jose Mourinho’s troops are two points ahead of Roma at the top of Serie A and must travel to Rome on Sunday to take on an improved Lazio side still fighting for survival. Roma will be hoping their city rivals can do them a favour but they know first they must leave Parma with three points.

Parma currently lie 10th in mid-table mediocrity with nothing left to play for and have not beaten Roma since 2005. When these two sides last met just before Christmas, Roma ran out 2-0 winners.

This match will be a typically tight Italian affair with Roma not being a prolific goal scoring side and Parma averaging only 1.09 goals per home match this season, so the 2.10 on offer for under 2.5 goals with PartyBets looks a good value bet.

The incentive for Roma to win here will ensure they leave with all three points so expect Roma to shut up shop and nick a goal or two at the other end through the attacking threat of Totti, Rossi, or leading scorer Vucinic.

Back Roma to win to nil at a decent priced 2.51 or go with a 2-0 victory for the title contenders at 6.50 with PartyBets.com.
