Atletico eye success in Pamplona

After another exciting weekend of La Liga action, Monday sees a game that could be vital to who makes the European places as Atletico Madrid travel to Pamplona to take on Osasuna (Osasuna 9/4, draw 11/5, Atletico 6/5).

Both sides currently sit just outside the European places and will be looking to take three points from their rivals in what is sure to be a thrilling encounter at the Reyno de Navarra.

Once again Osasuna continue to confound the critics and, despite being one of the smallest clubs in the league, are more than holding their own. However, they haven’t won for six games and are currently on the slide after making a superb start to the season.

Their problems have coincided with a bad run of injuries and the Navarrans (11/1 to win 2-1) are like to be without Ion Echaide, Roversio and Ruben Rocha while full-back Damia will miss the game though suspension. However, Jose Luis Mendilibar has built his side on hard work and team spirit and won’t be fazed by so many absentees.

Their key man is likely to be midfielder Javad Nekounam who, after a difficult start to his time in Spain, is now seen as one of the best players in the league. The Iranian cuts an imposing figure in the heart of midfield but his real strength lies in his passing game and his distribution will be vital as his team look to break down the Madrid rearguard.

Once again, despite having one of the best squads in the country, Atletico have failed to deliver the goods on a consistent basis this season but their form has picked up significantly since the appointment of former captain Diego Simeone at the end of 2011.

The Argentine was known for his determined style of play and this is exactly what ‘Los Rojiblancos’ have been missing and, having guided them to two wins from his three league games, he appears to have already stamped his mark on the side.

Atletico (12/1 Europa League outright) have a number of key players suspended for the match with both Diego and Gabi missing out, so there will be even more expected of Columbian striker Radamel Falcao. The talented forward initially struggled to settle into Spanish football following his summer transfer from Porto but has now hit 14 league goals this season and is apparently being linked with a move one of Europe’s premier clubs.

With Osasuna likely to try and play a physical style, Falcao’s ability to hold the ball up and bring others into the game will be vital if his team are to get a result.

Falcao could be the difference in Pamplona and his and Atletico’s extra quality should see the team from the capital through. However, Mendilibar’s team won’t go down easily so expect a superb encounter at the Reyno de Navarra (Atletico 6/1 to win 1-0).

Madrid to start 2012 with success

After the traditional winter break, Spanish football saw one of the most remarkable comebacks of the season on Tuesday as Real Madrid recovered from 2-0 down to take a 3-2 Copa Del Rey victory over Malaga. Jose Mourinho and his side now turn their attention to the league with their first La Liga fixture of the year on Saturday at home to minnows Granada (Real Madrid 1/14, draw 9/1, Granada 25/1).

Mourinho once again showed his ruthless streak in the Malaga match, making all three of his substitutions at half-time and the players he introduced all made a big difference. You can expect that trio of Benzema, Ozil and Khedira to be recalled to the starting XI at the weekend.

Of these three, Benzema (2/3 to score at anytime) will have the biggest point to prove as he continues to cement his place in the side ahead of Argentine Gonzalo Higuain. After a difficult first two seasons in Spain, where he struggled to adapt both on and off the pitch, Benzema is now one of the world’s premier strikers and has led the line with aplomb this term, scoring 14 goals in all competitions. Its pretty hard not to see him adding to his tally on Saturday and he’ll be looking for a big performance at the Bernabeu to help his side get 2012 off to the perfect start in the league.

Granada will be heading to the capital with little hope of winning and will view the match as a ‘damage limitation’ exercise. Fabri Gonzalez’s side have done well since their promotion and hold one of the best defensive records in the league. This has helped them rise to 13th in the league but it is at the other end of the pitch where they have struggled and they’re currently the lowest scorers in the competition.

However, they will certainly not lie down, especially after Madrid’s poor defensive display in the cup, and will look at Ikechukwu Uche (13/2 to score at anytime) as their best chance of breaking the Madrid rearguard. Uche is a well-travelled striker, having previously played for a number of top flight clubs in the last few seasons where he has always managed to find the net. The Nigerian has only scored once this season but has a habit of popping up with crucial goals and could find himself on the scoresheet.

However, Madrid should win this game and will be looking to extend their lead at the top of the table ahead of Barcelona’s match on Sunday. All their stars will be looking to make an impact as they look to get their 2012 campaigns off to a good start so expect a comfortable Madrid win (Madrid 11/1 to win 6-1).

United show fight for title success

Sir Alex Ferguson feels the way his Manchester United players stormed back from two-down to win 3-2 at Blackpool on Tuesday evening could be the defining moment in this season’s Premier League title race. However, with 15 games still remaining, can any club overhaul the Red Devils at the top of the table?

Looking ahead to an eagerly-awaited run-un, I’ll examine United’s main rivals in the battle to be England’s top dog come the end of the season.

Manchester United

It could be argued that the Premier League is United’s (8/13 Outright) to lose following that thrilling win at Bloomfield Road. Fergie’s Red Devils moved five points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table and maintained their unbeaten run from 23 games as they attempt to emulate the Gunners’ ‘Invincibles’ of 2003-04.

Dimitar Berbatov’s two goals at Blackpool saw him reach 20 for the season (4/6 Premiership Top Goalscorer), while last season’s lynchpin Wayne Rooney has not even got going so far this term.

Ferguson feels the England striker is due to come good at some point and if that does happen then it would be difficult to imagine anyone denying United their championship.

The return of the Champions League in February could take its toll on the United squad in the latter stages of the domestic campaign should they progress (United 13/2 Champions League Outright).

However, the same can be said of their title rivals and United have the strength in depth to cope.

Arsenal

Gunners chief Arsene Wenger has stressed that he wants his players to try and win every tournament they are involved in with the quadruple still on the cards.

No silverware has gone to the north Londoners since 2005’s FA Cup win, but that could be put right next month when they will contest the Carling Cup final at Wembley (Arsenal 1/4 Outright).

They face Huddersfield in the FA Cup this Sunday and also have the Champions League knockout stage to look forward to next month.

Arsenal’s young squad has suffered mentally under the pressure towards the end of recent seasons and that has resulted in their downfall.

However, success in the Carling Cup on February 27 could get the monkey off their back in terms of winning some silverware which could help them for the final two months of the league season.

The main problem for the Gunners is consistency – which they appear to have found of late with three 3-0 wins in their last four league games – as they will no doubt look back at costly home defeats to West Brom and Newcastle earlier in the season should they fall short again (Arsenal 13/5 Outright).

Manchester City

Roberto Mancini’s main remit for the season was to secure Champions League qualification for City (1/7 Top 4 Finish) and end the club’s long wait for some silverware.

However, as the campaign has progressed into 2011, many feel the men from Eastlands are still very much embroiled in a fight for the title (12/1 Outright) as they sit six points behind United, but having played one game more.

Inconsistency and a leaky defence is City’s main problem ‘ a 1-0 defeat at Aston Villa and conceding three goals at home to Wolves recently highlights this perfectly.

However, City have always led from the front and the recent arrival of Bosnian hitman Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg could be they key to them keeping the pressure on.

If Dzeko hits the ground running then he could add a few more points on the board, while the Manchester derby at Old Trafford on Saturday February 12 could make or break their bid.

City’s other problem is their desperation to win a trophy could see them push too hard in the FA Cup and Europa League which might distract them from the bread and butter of the Premier League.

Chelsea

Chelsea’s shocking run of form in recent weeks looks to have put a spanner in their title ambitions (7/1 Premier League Outright) as they sit 10 points behind United and are in fourth spot.

However, following their spell of just one win in nine league games, Carlo Ancelotti’s men got back into the goals with a 7-0 thrashing of Championship side Ipswich in the FA Cup third round.

They have not looked back since with a 2-0 win against Blackburn at Stamford Bridge followed up by Monday’s 4-0 thumping of Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.

Many observers are claiming the age of Chelsea’s key men is catching up with them this season.

However, to counter that you could say the reigning champions have the experience of what is required to win games when the nerves start to kick in during the run-in.

John Terry rightly pointed out that they still have Manchester United to play twice and, should they win both of those matches, the gap could be down to four points.

But, with the Champions League described by Frank Lampard described as the ‘Holy Grail’ for the west Londoners, it would be no surprise if they focused their attentions on success in Europe (Chelsea 9/2 Champions League Outright) this season and just ensure themselves a top-four spot in the Premier League.

Toure demands Toon success

Manchester City star Kolo ToureKolo Toure has stressed how important it is for Manchester City to follow up their win over Chelsea last weekend with another victory on Sunday against Newcastle United (City 2/5, Newcastle 15/2, draw 10/3).

Roberto Mancini’s side inflicted a first defeat of the season on the champions last Saturday to add credence to claims they can break into the top four of the Premier League.

The win follows up an earlier success over Liverpool at Eastlands too but Toure says it is vital they not only pick up three points against the big sides but also against the so-called lesser teams – like Newcastle.

The defender said: “We just need to be consistent in our results. The Newcastle game is really important because we need to show we have improved.

“Every time we play a big team we play well but when we play a team we are supposed to beat we struggle a bit. We hope to change that on Sunday.”

City, who could move a point behind the leaders if results go their way this weekend, were held by Juventus in the Europa League on Thursday but there are real signs the expensively-assembled squad at Eastlands is beginning to gel and that they are becoming a real force to be reckoned with (City to beat Newcastle 4-0 – 16/1).

Vincent Kompany is again set to partner the former Arsenal man at centre-half against the Magpies and Toure has been very impressed with the Belgium international – whose preferred position is really in midfield.

“Vincent is a really intelligent player,” added the Ivory Coast ace. “He was strong last season and is doing really well in this campaign.

“It is not easy playing centre-half when you have been in midfield. It takes time to get used to it but he is doing really well at the back, which is good for the team.”

Fletcher confident of success

Manchester United midfielder Darren FletcherDarren Fletcher says he is confident that Manchester United have enough star quality to reclaim the Premier League title next season (United 5/2 to win Premier League title).

The Scotland midfielder is well known for his hard working, spoiling style and his play has even been labelled “anti-football” by some correspondents.

However, he is fully aware of his standing within the side and recognises the qualities that others bring to the Reds.

“We’ve got a fantastic squad,” he says. “Plenty of players with ability who can make a difference.

“We’ve got the experience of Giggs, Scholes, Neville and Van der Sar. We’ve got Rooney, Berbatov, and the rest of the players who know their role in the team, who are willing to work hard for the team and who are willing to sacrifice for the team.”

Sir Alex Ferguson has been reluctant to open his cheque book so far this summer.

United currently appear to be going through a transitional period, with Sir Alex Ferguson preferring to invest in youth rather than big names.

With players such as the Da Silva twins, Jonny Evans, Kiko Macheda and Danny Welbeck already firmly in first team plans at Old Trafford, as well as the potential in Tom Cleverly and new signing Chris Smalling, the future looks bright.

Meanwhile, Fletcher is confident that the club’s current stars can step up to the plate and help the youngsters along after the recent exodus of some high profile names.

“People always speak about us losing Carlos Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, but Antonio Valencia has come in, Nani will step up to the plate and others will improve.”

United’s lack of strength in depth has been criticised in recent years and at one point last season Fletcher was forced to play as a central defender alongside fellow midfielder Michael Carrick.

The lack of big names also appears to mean that there will once again be a lot of pressure on striker Wayne Rooney to perform but Fletcher believes United still have the players to back-up the England man and be successful in the Premier League (United 1/5 to beat Newcastle on the opening day).

“I’d have liked to have seen Chelsea cope with Lampard and Ballack at the back,” he says, smiling.

“We’ve still got star quality and we’d have won the league last year if it wasn’t for that injury crisis. But it’s not necessarily about your star players. You need different components to make a team.”

With Messi, Barcelona can snipe la Liga success with victory over Villareal

post thumbnail

lionel messi barcelona1 203x300 With Messi, Barcelona can snipe la Liga success with victory over VillarealJose Mourinho’s victory dance over the Nou Camp pitch on Wednesday night signalled the end of Barcelona’s hopes of Champions League glory and with that the pleasure that would have been taken from lifting aloft the trophy at the home of arch-rivals Real Madrid.

The Catalan giants now only have one title left to play for and all they have to do is win their remaining four games as they currently hold a one point advantage over Real Madrid who are just waiting for a Barcelona slip to leapfrog them to the top of La Liga.

Barcelona will attempt to put the disappointment of Wednesday night behind them when they travel to Villareal on Saturday night. Of the four games Barcelona have left this fixture is one of the trickiest and they will have to be emotionally over their Champions League exit.

Villareal themselves need to produce a sprint to the finishing line if they are to sneak into the top four in a late bid for a Champions League place next season. They are currently 6th in the league just four points behind Real Mallorca who occupy 4th place so they are in with a slim chance.

The Yellow Submarine managed to hold Barca to a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp when the two sides met in January, but they will have to turn in the perfect performance if they are to beat Barcelona at El Madrigal this weekend.

Villareal have only suffered two defeats at home this season, but Barcelona should make it three. Barcelona will punish Villareal with the likes of Messi and Xavi on the counter so back Leo Messi to score first at 3.75 and Barcelona to win 3-1 at 14.00 with PartyBets.com.
