Who can take United’s crown?

The excitement of ‘Survival Sunday‘ has barely died down and players and fans alike will have likely been nursing headaches today following end-of-season parties after the conclusion of the Premier League. However, behind the scenes, plans will already be in place for the 2011-12 season.

Aside from those threatened with the drop over the weekend, most clubs would have had a good idea of their budgets for next term heading into the weekend and the majority of managers will have already handed their list of transfer targets to their respective chairmen and boards.

Scouts around the globe, meanwhile, will have been busily checking out talented youngsters and filing reports in the bid to unearth the next Cristano Ronaldo, Luis Suarez or Peter Odemwingie for their employers.

If you check totesport’s odds to win next season’s top domestic prize it will come as no surprise that they believe only five clubs have any sort of chance  of claiming Manchester United’s title in 2012 – and that includes Liverpool (11/1) who are tipped by many to be dark horses next term provided Kenny Dalglish is handed significant funds over the summer to turn a sixth-placed finish into a more respectable top-four challenge, such was the Scot’s impact back on Merseyside when he returned in the new year.

However, despite high hopes on the Kop that the Reds can challenge right at the top in 2011-12, the best they surely can hope for is to break back into the top four they used to reguarly be in under Rafa Benitez. Without the distraction of the Europa League next season, it does look a realistic aim for Dalglish’s men ahead of what is likely to be a busy summer of comings-and-goings at Anfield.

Chelsea (11/4 to win PL next season) faltered in the final run-in after getting themselves back into contention in March and April but that wasn’t enough to save Carlo Ancelotti his job and he was dumped by owner Roman Abramovic after a trophyless season, despite winning the double just 12 months ago in his first year in charge. It’s fair to say the loaded Russian’s definition of failure does not concur with pretty much the rest of the world.

So that leaves the Blues facing another transitional summer amid reports Guus Hiddink or even Jose Mourinho could return. With that in mind, and the futures of several key first-teamers up in the air, we boldly predict  – at the end of May – the best the Blues can achieve next season is second place again.

Arsenal (7/1), meanwhile, are likely to go one of two ways this summer:

Scenario 1 – The Gunners finally spend big money on a top-class goalkeeper, centre-half and a 25-goals-a-season striker to partner the fully-fit Robin van Persie and they confidently battle Manchester United for the title once again.

Scenario 2 – Arsene Wenger again refuses to spend what is required on the players he so obviously needs, Cesc Fabregas leaves on deadline day for Barcelona for £40million meaning there’s no time to find a replacement so they are left to fight over fourth with Liverpool and Spurs.

And that leaves us with City (3/1) and United (13/8).

Despite not being one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s most eye-catching of teams, the champions have demonstrated this season they have character, squad depth and no little quality to have eventually seen off all the other challengers without too many problems.

Expect just a couple of big-money arrivals as Fergie tweaks his squad slightly over the summer but, largely, the same group of players who have just lifted the title can again emerge as the ones to beat next season.

But, if City get it right in June and July, they might do just that instead.

Roberto Mancini has impressively managed to mould an expensively-assembled squad of players into an FA Cup-winning and top-four side, which is no mean feat considering he has had to deal with some apparently difficult characters – Carlos Tevez and Mario Balotelli to name but two.

If Tevez stays – which is not guaranteed – and also remains fit, he could well lead City on a real title charge next term. There are bound to be a few high-profile arrivals at Eastlands as well and, with the budget they have, more top-quality talent will only add further depth to the world-class pool of talent already in Mancini’s large squad.

So, with that in mind and, yes, it’s very early to say so, but 2011-12 may just be City’s season.

Konchesky aiming to take his chance

Liverpool defender Paul Konchesky has admitted he is determined to take his chance and ‘play at the highest level’ with the Reds and says he cannot wait to turn out for his new club (Liverpool 6/4 – top four finish).

Konchesky followed boss Roy Hodgson from Fulham to Anfield this summer and the 29-year-old is expected to be the first-choice left back for Liverpool for the rest of the season.

The former England international admitted he jumped at the chance to make the switch to Merseyside and, while teaming up again with Hodgson was a factor in his decision to move, the lure of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the country was just too good an opportunity to turn down.

“I’m 29 and this is my last chance to play at the highest level,” Konchesky said. “That is what Liverpool are and I am really looking forward to it. “It (Hodgson) was a big factor but Liverpool being a big club was a massive factor.

“I’m looking forward to getting a new lease of life and playing at a very high standard. I can’t wait to pull on a Liverpool shirt in the Premier League - it is a massive club and it is a big step for me.”

Konchesky got his first taste of playing for Liverpool at Anfield when he turned out in Jamie Carragher’s testimonial on Saturday and he says he is ready to take his chance for his new club.

“I just want to give it my all and go from there,” he added. “I’ve had three or four days’ training and although there have not been a lot of players there it has been a good week and I am hopefully going to enjoy it soon.

“You look at the history they have got behind them – it is unbelievable – and there are some great players here. If we can bring that back to the side this year in something like the Europa League (11/1 to win outright) then this team can go a long way.”

Gerrard: England must take boos

England captain Steven GerrardEngland captain Steven Gerrard has admitted that if he was a fan he would boo the side at Wembley when they face Hungary on Wednesday night (England 2/7, draw 4/1, Hungary 11/1).

Speaking at a press conference ahead of the friendly, the Liverpool skipper believes that there will be a mixed reception for the players.

England drew plenty of criticism after the squad failed to live up to the high expectations placed upon them ahead of the World Cup in South Africa this summer.

The Three Lions drew their opening game with the USA after a Robert Green error gifted the underdogs the equaliser.

England then went on to draw with Algeria in an extremely disappointing performance before they scraped past Slovenia 1-0.

The 1966 World Cup winners were then beaten convincingly by Germany in the knockout stages and since that game, the side has come under heavy criticism.

Gerrard has stated that England will have to accept the boos on Wednesday night after a poor World Cup.

He said: “I’m sure there will be boos at times tomorrow night but we have to deal with that, we have to be men and take it on the chin.

“We deserve it. We let them (the fans) down in the summer. So we have to get on with that and hopefully in time we can show them we are a good team, there is a togetherness there and hopefully we can make them happy in the future,” he added.

England boss Fabio Capello was blamed by the media and the fans for not doing better in South Africa.

The Italian was criticised for not playing players like Gerrard in the positions in which they regularly feature for their clubs.

Capello wanted to continue working with the national side and is now looking to build towards the European Championships in 2012 (England 9/1 to win the 2012 European Championships).

Gerrard has stated that he still believes in the manager despite the poor World Cup tournament.

He said: “I’ve got big faith in this manager as I’ve said all along.

“I think it would be very stupid and naïve not to still have that confidence in him moving forward. He’s a fantastic manager.”

Germany take third place

Germany coach Joachim LowGermany (5/1 to win European Championships 2012) claimed third place at the World Cup after winning an enthralling play-off 3-2 against Uruguay in Port Elizabeth.

Sami Khedira headed home the winning goal to ensure that Europe claims a 1-2-3 at the tournament.

The Germans took the lead in the first half, but Uruguay led 2-1 at one stage after the interval. Thomas Mueller scored his fifth goal of the tournament to edge the Germans ahead, Edison Cavani levelled and then Diego Forlan matched Mueller’s achievement by notching his fifth goal only for Marcell Jansen to make it 2-2.

The Germans had their share of luck, as Forlan hit the bar with a free-kick deep into injury time. And they might have had to play with 10 men for virtually the whole game if the referee had been harsher on Dennis Aogo’s dreadful challenge on Diego Perez.

Germany made most of the early running, forcing Jorge Fucile and Diego Lugano into some desperate clearances. The South American defence was very nearly breached on ten minutes when a deep corner from Mesut Oezil was firmly headed against the bar by Arne Friedrich, with Fernando Muslera beaten. Mueller could not wrestle home the rebound.

But Bastian Schweinsteiger paved the way for Germany’s first goal, his long range shot being spilled by Muslera for Mueller to react quickly and net the rebound.

Forlan had already worried the German rearguard with a blocked back post header from a deflected cross by the time Cavani drew the sides level. Perez superbly picked the pocket of Schweinsteiger in the centre of the park, setting in motion a break that saw the Europeans outnumbered from the outset. Luis Suarez rolled a well-weighted pass to the Palmero striker, who took a touch before stretching to prod the ball by Butt and into the net.

Uruguay might have grabbed the lead four minutes before the break. Forlan’s clever reverse pass released Suarez but the Ajax striker dragged his shot wide from a somewhat awkward angle.

Arevalo Rios found himself uncharacteristically far forward down the right and lobbed a waist-height pass back towards the edge of the box, from where Forlan showed stunning poise to volley home a terrific goal with his right foot.

Germany had posed no serious threat after the interval until they levelled up on 55 minutes. Jerome Boateng’s cross from deep on the right side was badly missed by the out-of-sorts Muslera, allowing Jansen to unconventionally knock the ball into the empty net with his head.

Stefan Kiessling was introduced by Joachim Loew to add some attacking flair at the expense of Cacau. The Bayer Leverkusen man’s clever turn in the box with quarter of an hour brought with it a scoring chance, though his drive was straight at Muslera, who batted the ball uncomfortably clear.

Loew’s side were looking the more likely side to snatch third place, and they did just that with nine minutes remaining. Another deep Oezil corner was allowed to bounce about the six yard box. Khedira ultimately got the decisive touch, sending a clever header looping over Muslera and into the top corner of the net.

Robben ready to take a gamble

Netherlands winger Arjen RobbenArjen Robben is ready to take a gamble by playing against Cameroon on Thursday for the Netherlands (Holland 1/33 to win Group E).

The winger suffered a hamstring injury during the Dutch side’s final warm-up game against Hungary, and had to have five days of treatment.

He said he could play against Cameroon, just 19 days since he suffered the injury.

“Playing against Cameroon is possible,” Robben told reporters. “Risk is a big word as we already have taken a risk by choosing an aggressive treatment, where we could have written off the World Cup and said just go on holiday.”

The Dutch are already through to the last 16, so the pressure is off them to play their first-choice team against the already-eliminated Cameroon side.

The questions about a “missing link” in the Dutch side have made Robben a hot media topic but the nature of the injury has left him on the sidelines.

“You have to be 100 percent to play,” he said. “So far we have been considering the situation day-by-day as it happened only two weeks ago and normally it would take four to six weeks to recover from such an injury,” he added.

“Yesterday I had a tough training session, with some good five-a-side matches, and I came through well. I don’t think there’s a big risk that anything will happen to the hamstring.”

If Robben features at these finals it will be his fourth straight appearance at a major tournament.

“It has been hard so far,” said Robben. “I noticed during the first two matches that it is painful if you can’t play and just have to stay on the sidelines.”

“The recuperation was no fun at all and sometimes I felt like a martyr but I knew why I did it,” he added.

Holland boss Bert van Marwijk will let Robben make his own judgment over his fitness.

The winger has missed Holland’s two Group E victories with a hamstring problem so far as his team-mates breezed into the last 16 by beating Denmark and Japan.

“I am going to leave him to make the decision,” said Van Marwijk.

“He knows his own body best and he will let me know when he is ready.

“It can be in the next game or it can be in the knockout phase. He must take the decision.

“I’d prefer that he is used only when he is fit.”

Totti saves Roma to take Serie A chase down to final game

post thumbnail

Wins for both Roma and Inter Milan on Sunday means the Scudetto will have to be won on the last day of the season.

Inter Milan 4 – Chievo 3

Inter Milan Scudetto Totti saves Roma to take Serie A chase down to final gameThe Serie A leaders conceded a goal after just 12 minutes at home to Chievo when a right wing cross was pushed into his own net by Thiago Motta. Jose Mourinho’s side were behind for no more than a minute when an Eto’o pass into the Chievo box was turned into an own goal by Chievo player Andrea Mantovani.

Just after 30 minutes Inter took the lead, with Esteban Cambiasso scoring. Inter extended their lead in the 39th minute when Diego Milito netted his 21st goal in the league with a chip from 15-yards out. The final result seemed to be a foregone conclusion at the start of the second half after Maicon’s ball over the top was collected by Mario Balotelli who led Inter into a 4-1 lead.

But Chievo managed to put themselves back in the running soon after when Pablo Granoche was able to put one past Julio Cesar. Amazingly Chievo scored again to make the score 4-3 when Zanetti played ball across the backline and Sergio Pellisier nipped in and scored a third for the visitors.

Roma 2 – Cagliari 1

Roma, needed to win to keep alive any chances of claiming the Scudetto, and missed numerous early chances to take the lead against Cagliari, and with under 20 minutes to go the Giallorossi’s were punished when Andrea Lazzari brought home a beauty from a free-kick.

Roma’s woes looked certain after PartyPoker.it ambassador Francesco Totti lifted a chip over the bar from mere yards out, but only minutes later Totti was able to score the leveller and restore hope once again for Raneri’s men. Roma then took the lead to breathe life back into the race for the title, Riise’s cross was cut short by a stray hand and Francesco Totti converted the critical second goal.

This means if Inter Milan win their final game of the season, away to relegated Siena, they will retain the Scudetto – and complete the second part of an historic treble which is looking more and more likely.

Chelsea Take the Premier League Title In Style

FA Cup winners 250x300 Chelsea Take the Premier League Title In Style

Next On The Agenda For Chelsea

A league title can hardly ever have been secured more emphatically than via an eight goal victory as Chelsea swept past Wigan Athletic to end Manchester United’s attempt for a historic four in a row.

United beat Stoke City 4-0 in their last game but once Wigan had a man sent off and Chelsea scored a second from the spot, the final day turned into a romp.

In the process Chelsea’s tally of goals for the Premier League campaign reached an astonishing 103-the highest by a top flight side since way back in the 1960s. As well as the eight in the last game, the Blues hammered seven no less than three times.

The goals tally is significant but the statistic that stood out is that Chelsea won all their matches against the other members of the ‘Big 4. The sevens and eights caught the eye but the victories at Old Trafford, the Emirates Stadium and Anfield were the bedrock of their third title in six seasons.

On the last day, Didier Drogba slotted in a second half hat-trick which edged him past Wayne Rooney to be top scorer for the season. The Ivorian ended with 29 but it was Frank Lampard’s amazing 22 from midfield that really made the difference.

The Double Is A Sure Bet

Chelsea now go on to try and complete the club’s first domestic ‘Double’ against Portsmouth in the FA Cup Final. Their opponents are managed by former boss Avram Grant.  And who would bet against that considering the disparity in talent between the two teams.  Chelsea head into the game at 1.20 to lift the FA Cup, there’s no value to be had in the outright market so a punt on another high scoring game offers better value.  Take over 3.5 goals in the game at 2.40 to maximise your FA Cup betting.

Arsenal disposed of a weakened Fulham side to make sure of third place- perhaps word that the Gunners were winning filtered through to Turf Moor as Spurs allowed Burnley to battle back fro two gaols adrift to end their season on a high.

Tottenham won their big result on Wednesday at Manchester City, so its not surprising they ran out of steam when the chance of pipping Arsenal to third place petered out.

Burnley ended with the mild satisfaction of passing Hull City to finish eighteenth. The Tigers held Liverpool 0-0 which probably says everything about Liverpool’s season.

The Reds did at least finish two points clear of Everton who won their final game against doomed Portsmouth. The Toffees must rue their opening in August when they lost three games out of the first four, plus defeats in both Merseyside derbies.

Can Real Madrid take Barcelona to La Liga wire?

post thumbnail

ChrisLa Liga 300x150 Can Real Madrid take Barcelona to La Liga wire? went some way to repaying the huge transfer fee Real Madrid payed for him in the summer with a dazzling display against a very decent Real Mallorca side.

Ronaldo (2.75 to score first) claimed a hat-trick in a 4-1 win for los Blancos on Wednesday night – which keeps the pressure on Barcelona in the title race.

Both sides will be playing at 8pm on Saturday night with Madrid playing at home against Athletic Blibao – a side they lost to earlier in the season.
Bilbao are chasing a place in next season’s Europa League as they currently sit in 8th place just two points behind Getafe in 6th position. However, they are on a dismal run of form and have not won in nearly a month.

Their away record is pretty poor too with only 4 wins on the road all season – compare that with Real Madrid’s fine home record of 17 wins and just 1 loss, Bilbao haven’t got a chance.

  • Back another Galactico special show and a 3-0 home win at 6.50 with PartyBets.com.

Real Madrid will be hoping Champions League place chasing Sevilla can do them a favour by taking points of Barcelona as we play out the final two games each of the La Liga season.

Both Barcelona and Real Madrid have already exceeded the 90 points mark – an amount which would be enough to win La Liga in previous seasons. Whoever loses out now will be bitterly disappointed to say the least – but it is in Barcelona’s hands.

Sevilla though will not be in a charitable mood, they know defeat to Barcelona opens the door for Mallorca to slip back into the coveted 4th place – and with a 5-1 win away to Santander on Wednesday night showing what Sevilla are capable of, Barcelona might be worried.

The two sides have gone head-to-head four time in the last 12 months with Barca winning 3 and losing 1, there last meeting was a comprehensive 4-0 win for Messi and co at the Nou Camp.

  • Barcelona will have enough in their locker to stay on path to win this season’s La Liga so back a 2-0 in for Guardiola’s men at 6.50 with Partybets.com.
