Graham Hunter exclusive: Why La Liga is a two-horse race – but there may be a Cup in the new-look Atletico

So the joke goes: an anteater walks into a bar wearing an Atlético Madrid scarf and the barman says to him: Why the long odds?.

You can take 14/1 off Paddy Power for los Rojiblancos to defend their title and while it’s probably common sense to offer them as third favourites against the vastly reinforced Barcelona and Madrid – those odds for a defending champion is an unusual sight.

Particularly after the club splurged it’s greatest ever outlay on a single transfer binge – touching €98m gross once the delayed operation for Ángel Correa (whose heart anomaly needs to be defined and corrected) is completed.

Moreover,  this club, in recent years, must be in the top three of world football for spotting the right players, whether expensive, cheap or free, to be affordable, the right ‘fit’, winners and with a major sell-on value.

They have a fabulous track record over the last four or five years. Fabulous.

Thibaut-Courtois-800

To put flesh on this summer’s bones, manager Diego Simeone has added exciting French winger/second striker Antoine ‘Greased Lightning’ Griezmann, Mario Mandzukic, Correa, Benfica keeper Jan Oblak, Mexican striker Raúl Jimenéz, back-up keeper Miguel Ángel Moya and flying wing-back Guillherme Siqueira.

Of the 14 departures the most significant are Diego Costa, Thibaut Courtois (above), Filipe Luis, Diego Ribas and David Villa.

Putting the squeeze on …

Simeone (below) justifiably enjoys the reputation of a man-manager who is able to squeeze every last drop of attitude and commitment out of his footballers – something which may be handy with Mandzukic.

As such it’s feasible that he can handle the impact of this hemorrhage / transfusion operation of players in and out more quickly and more successfully than most.

The age and quality of their recruits plus the block of important footballers who’ve been retained (Miranda, Godín, Gabi, Koke, Juanfran, Raúl Garcia for example) suggests that there might be a trophy in Atlético.

Also that they should be capable of doing some damage to the ‘big two’ in one-on-one situations. But the title? No.

To me the key is that Atlético won La Liga by a hairsbreadth last season.

Twelve single goal wins (18 across all competitions), clinching the title on the last day at the Camp Nou where just one more goal from Barcelona, in a weak season, would have given them the crown. Hairsbreadth.

Throughout the season they were constantly in debt to Costa for those single-goal victories – winners against Milan, Madrid, Levante and Athletic in Europe, La Liga and the Copa Del Rey are examples. Equally, Courtois saved them over and over and over again.

Up for the Cup …

Good luck to the armada of new strikers and to goalkeeper Oblak.

But it’s just not feasible for them to reproduce what Simeone has lost in a season when there’s been the disruption of 23 moves either in or out. Last summer I tipped Simeone’s lot as likely title winners.

Trust me again when I say nothing better than a cup competition this time around.

Barcelona-800

So, who else outside Los Rojiblancos MIGHT do damage to Madrid and Barça?

Last season was a finger in the eye to the ‘disengage brain and open mouth’ pundits who know nothing about La Liga. ‘Not competitive, two horse blah, blah, yawn, halfwit comment…’ was too often the stereotypical comment.

Beyond Atlético winning the title, Madrid and Barcelona lost points home and away to Levante, Real Sociedad, Granada, Getafe, Elche, Villarreal, Sevilla and Celta Vigo while the clubs who took points off BOTH the big two were Athletic, Osasuna, Valencia and Valladolid.

So 13 clubs were able to trip the big two up. Competitive.

Sadly, I believe, things have changed. Most weeks I’ll go into more depth about the individual clubs who catch the eye in La Liga but suffice to say now: Osasuna and Valladolid have been relegated, Levante, Getafe, Real Sociedad, Athletic, Sevilla, Celta, Atlético have all lost either their best or second best player and/or their manager.

Ronaldo celebrates

Elche and Granada might be around a similar level but won’t be putting their life savings on taking major scalps again while it’s arguable that Villarreal and Valencia might be more competitive this time around.

Madrid and Barcelona will inevitably slip up here and there but I’m convinced that, this season, it actually is a one v one battle to succeed 2014 champions Atlético.

Group C there for the taking

Bet on the Champions LeagueManchester United have had plenty of time to get themselves ready for Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Valencia at Old Trafford and should be fresh following the postponement of the trip to Blackpool last weekend.

However, the clash looks far from straightforward despite the home side being 7/10 favourites in the match betting.

Both sides have already booked their progression to the knockout stages but the Group C winners still need to be decided, with United currently holding a three-point advantage having won 1-0 at the Mestalla.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have had longer to prepare for the clash, with Valencia (21/5 to win, 13/5 the draw in the match betting) losing 2-0 at Real Madrid at the weekend, but as anyone who has seen them play this season will tell you, they have not exactly set the world alight.

They certainly are a side that never knows when it is beaten but the fluency of previous seasons has not been present, while the jewel in Sir Alex Ferguson’s crown, Wayne Rooney, still has to find his best form.

There is also the small matter of a Premier League top-of-the-table clash against Arsenal on Monday which is more likely to be the priority for United, and therefore one or two players may be rested.

This is sure to be a worry for United fans and followers given the nature of the weakened team’s 4-0 hammering at the hands of Premier League basement boys West Ham in the Carling Cup quarter-final last week.

Valencia’s away form in general this season has been inconsistent (winning three, losing three and drawing one in La Liga) and they only managed a 1-1 draw at Ibrox against Rangers, but the players should take confidence from the fact they have won their last two Group C games to confirm qualification, scoring nine goals in the process.

I do not foresee a goal-fest on Tuesday night (4/5 Under 2.5 goals) but with United just needing a point to take the group, they might not be as adventurous as they could be, and a nothing-to-lose Valencia are worth backing at 21/20 in the handicap betting with a goal start.

Elsewhere in the group, there is nothing of note to play for, with whipping boys Bursaspor (5/4 to win in the match betting) attempting to at least finish on a high when they host Rangers (11/5 to win, 9/4 the draw).

However, the Turkish champions have been poor in Europe’s elite competition, losing all five games played so far, conceding 15 goals in the process and scoring just one – which came when they were already 5-0 down in Valencia.

Rangers have hardly been finding the net with regularity, just twice, but did win the reverse fixture 1-0 and boast a stronger defence, conceding only five in their five games (which includes a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford).

The Gers also have had the weekend off due to the adverse weather conditions sweeping Great Britain and I fancy them to edge another tight affair between the two (8/13 Under 2.5 goals).

Tottenham (5/4 favourites in the match betting) have been great value for their supporters on their debut season in the Champions League, scoring 15 goals in their five games so far to book qualification to the knockout stages.

Spurs currently top Group A by virtue of having a better goal difference than reigning champions Inter Milan but have a tougher-looking finale with a trip to FC Twente (2/1 to win, 5/2 the draw).

The Dutch champions are hard to beat in Enschede and have already held Inter to a 2-2 draw. They need just a point to ensure their third-place finish and qualification to the Europa League.

Spurs have been free-scoring in the Champions League, beating Twente 4-1 at home, but they may just have one eye on a massive Premier League clash on Sunday when they take on Chelsea at White Hart Lane.

Harry Redknapp’s men certainly have struggled to defend though and this could be another game that features a few goals (5/6 Over 2.5 goals).

There is more to come from Chile – Gonzalez

Chile international Mark GonzalezFormer Liverpool winger Mark Gonzalez believes there is much more to come from his Chile (7/10 to qualify from Group H) outfit in the World Cup.

The Chileans impressed in their 1-0 win over Honduras as they started their Group H campaign in Nelspruit.

Jean Beausejour’s 34th minute goal was the first time Chile had hit the net in the World Cup finals since 1962, but Gonzalez says the team won’t be celebrating their success too long, with Monday’s clash against Switzerland in Port Elizabeth just around the corner.

The 25-year-old, now at CSKA Moscow, said: “It is always important to win the first three points and after that you can think you have one leg in the second round.

“We just want to celebrate, especially because we have made history – for so many years Chile did not win a game at the World Cup.

“We are very happy about that but looking forward to the second game now.

“We just have to think about Switzerland now. It will be a tough game and we will have to keep up our good work.

“I don’t know much about the Swiss but we know they are a very tough team.

“We will watch videos during the week, so we will know them better.

“We will try to win the next game so we can think about the next round.”

Chile are joint top of the group, along with Switzerland who shocked World Cup favourites Spain 1-0.

“We can’t relax yet,” Gonzalez added. “I think we can do much better.

“We won 1-0 but could have scored more goals. As a team we did things wrong and we will try to fix that up.”

Honduras’ first World Cup in 28 years started with a whimper, even before the game, as key striker David Suazo failed a fitness test on a thigh injury and playmaker Julio Cesar de Leon was ruled out of the tournament on the eve of the match after breaking down in training.

Honduras now have five days to lift themselves before their daunting match-up with Spain at Johannesburg’s Ellis Park.

Veteran captain Amado Guevara said: “Nobody likes to lose, less so in a World Cup, but there are things we can salvage.

“We knew Chile would play to attack but we lacked the patience to control the ball.

“We misplaced too many passes and we need to be more relaxed.”

For De Leon, the result compounded his sadness at being forced home early.

The Torino midfielder suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the week and, after being told to rest for at least a fortnight, gave up his place in the squad.

De Leon said: “I go with the bitterness of not giving the people what they deserve, not showing the world my football.

“There’s something dead inside me, I have no strength to mourn.

“But I must be positive, put on a brave face and smile, because some people are worse off than me.

“For years I struggled to achieve my dream of playing a World Cup, and it has gone – but every player is exposed and unfortunately it befell me.”

Barcelona are nearly there

post thumbnail

La Liga 300x150 Barcelona are nearly thereThe penultimate games of the La Liga season were concluded over the weekend with both Barcelona and Real Madrid recording victories.

Sevilla 2 – Barcelona 3

Lionel Messi came up with the goods again after only five minutes of Barcelona’s difficult looking match at Sevilla, knocking down a Maxwell pass and ending with class. Bojan Krkic then doubled Barca’s lead just before the end of the first 30 minutes. Once Konko had been sent off, Pedro grabbed the third goal for Barcelona with a fantastic effort from the edge of the box. Sevilla however refused to admit defeat and with two goals in two minutes from Fredi Kanoute and Luis Fabiano the home side came back into the match.

Real Madrid 5 – Athletic Bilbao 1

On twenty minutes Christiano Ronaldo gave Real Madrid the lead against Athletic Bilbao from the penalty spot. Athletic Bilbao hit back just before half time, Fran Yeste moved through the home defence and scored a fine goal. In the 72nd minute a free-kick gave Gonzalo Higuain the opportunity to put Real Madrid in front again. Goals then came in quick succession from Sergio Ramos (80) and Karim Benzema (81) to rack up another win for Manuel Pellegrini’s side with Marcelo adding a fifth goal late on.

All this now means that Barcelona only have to win their last match of the season – at home to relegation threatened Real Valladolid – to retain their league champions crown.

Real Madrid will have to hope Valladolid’s desire for La Liga football next season produces a wonder display and denies Guardiola’s men the three points whilst also winning their final game of the season away to Malaga. It is an unlikely event to happen, but it is all Real Madrid have to hope for now as La Liga is firmly in the hands of Messi and co.

Holloway insists there is nothing to fear

Blackpool manager Ian HollowayBlackpool boss Ian Holloway says the Seasiders have nothing to fear when they travel to Nottingham Forest for Tuesday night’s Championship play-off semi final second leg.

Holloway’s men hold a slender 2-1 advantage following Saturday’s first-leg at Bloomfield Road but know they will face a sterner examination when travel to the City Ground.

A draw will be enough to take the Seasiders through to Wembley and punters who fancy them to hold Forest can take a price of 5/2, while the win is 4/1.

Blackpool can take heart from the fact they have already beaten Forest on their home turf this season when a goal from leading scorer Charlie Adam earned them a 1-0 win and Holloway is hoping for much of the same.

“Forest know they are brilliant at home. They just know that. You only have to look at their record this season,” Holloway revealed.

“But we’ve got nothing to fear and we’ve got to go there and try to play. A little fillip for us is that we did manage to go there and win 1-0 earlier in the season. Whether it was luck or not, we did it.

“If we can get lucky in this next one then I’ll take it. But we can’t rely on that.”

Adam is 8/1 to bag the first goal, while punters who are predicting a repeat of events at the City Ground back in September can take a price of 50/1.

Forest are usually outstanding at home and are odds on at 8/11 to pick up the victory. They need to win 2-0 (6/1) to prevent it going to extra-time as away goals do not come into play, so it is sure to be an open game.

The last three fixtures between the two sides have also been high scoring affairs with three or more goals scored and punters can take odds of 11/10 on another goal fest.
