3) Sunderland to bounce back from their 5-1 mauling at Newcastle when they return to familiar surroundings to take on poor travellers Stoke.

4) The loan signing of David Healy can help Doncaster Rovers (Evens in the match betting) continue their impressive home form against Millwall (13/5 to win, 23/10 the draw).
5) Leicester have also delved into the loanmarket and the arrivals of Darius Vassell and Curtis Davies can earn the win at Barnsley.

6) In a real relegation battle, the last side Preston want to take on is Bristol City as the Robins have lost only one of the last 25 matches against North End.

7) Cristiano Ronaldo is on fire at the moment, scoring 10 goals in his last four games in the Primera Liga, and the former Manchester United ace can lead Real to glory in the Madrid derby.

8) Bayern Munich have turned a corner since their defeat to league leaders Borussia Dortmund and can continue their unbeaten run, winning four of the last five, against basement outfit Borussia Monchengladbach.

9) Schalke 04 have endured a disappointing start to the campaign but the side that finished second last year can still call on the likes of Raul and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and should justify favouritism against Bundesliga new boys St Pauli.

10) Bristol Rovers have made a solid start to their League One campaign and can be backed at 10/11 to prevent an FA Cup shock at Darlington, who have already lost three at home and lie mid-table in the Conference.

Tevez admits he could quit football

Manchester City striker Carlos Tevez has admitted he is disillusioned with football and could quit the game (City 15/2 to win Premier League).

The Argentine forward has reiterated the comments he made over the summer, when he said he could quit professional football because he struggles to motivate himself.

He admits that he currently feels drained and that the stress of being one of the most high profile players in the Premier League is affecting his body and mind.

Despite this, he has been instrumental in the improvement of City’s form so far this season, which has seen the Eastlands outfit overcome a shaky start to the season to sit in second place in the Premier League.

The striker has also lead by example as City’s captain after being handed the armband by boss Roberto Mancini. However, this has done little to reinvigorate him and he has now told The News of the World that he is thinking of quitting, citing the number of games he has played this season as being contributory to his tiredness.

The 26-year-old said: “I’m an old guy now, and I started to think about some stuff. For example, I am less tolerant as a person today than I was a few years ago.

“Then I think – what happens if I quit football as long as I am okay in my life?

“When I talk about quitting, I mean quitting football, not just the national team. But at the moment I still don’t know if this is going to be in one month, one year, three or five years.

“I have the idea of quitting in my mind. Maybe one of these days, I will just wake up and say no more football.”

As well as professional issues, Tevez has admitted that his workload is affecting his family life. He says that since playing in England he has not shared a single Christmas or New Year with his nearest and dearest and this is contributing to his lack of enjoyment with life as a footballer.

City fans will be hoping that Tevez does not decide to hang up his boots just yet, particularly as he is in such influential form, having scored five League goals this season. They currently sit four points behind League leaders Chelsea but they are the team in form having beaten the Blues 1-0 at Eastlands before backing this up with a 2-1 success against Newcastle.

Roberto Mancini will be hoping that this form continues in City’s next game against Blackpool next Sunday.

Reid retires from international football

steven reidRepublic of Ireland have suffered a blow ahead of their Euro 2012 qualifying campaign with the news midfielder Steven Reid has decided to retire from international football (Republic of Ireland 80/1 to win Euro 2012).

Reid has 22 caps for his country and made his debut in the 2-2 draw with Croatia in 2001 but has decdied to call it a day at international level in order to concentrate on his club form with newly-promoted West Brom  (West Brom 4/5 to be relegated from the Premier League next season).

“It was a tough decision because I’ve had some terrific times with Ireland,” said Reid who has recently signed a new two-year deal with the Baggies.

“But having weighed everything up, I know this is the right decision. The injuries I’ve had over the past couple of years have been well documented and I’ve taken this step to prolong my club career and to spend more time with my family.”

Reid was part of the Ireland squad that reached the knockout stages of the 2002 World Cup and his performances gained him a move to Premiership side Blackburn.

However, his stay at Ewood Park was blighted by injuries and Reid says that retiring from international football was a decision made in conjunction with his new club’s medical staff as he looks to make a fresh start at the Hawthorns.

“It’s a decision I came to after lengthy discussions with the club’s medical staff and my family. I’ve had some unforgettable times with Ireland, the highlight being making two appearances at the World Cup Finals in Japan and South Korea in 2002 and it has always been a huge honour for me to wear the Irish jersey.

“It’s just a shame my injuries cut short the number of caps I possibly could have won over the past few years.”

Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni said he was “sorry” about the news and thanked the midfilder for his contribution to the side in recent years.

“We are sorry to hear about Steven’s decision to retire from international football to concentrate on his club career at West Bromwich Albion.

“His commanding presence for the Republic of Ireland will be missed by his teammates and fans alike. Steven always showed tremendous commitment to the Irish jersey even during difficult times in his career and for that we thank him most warmly.”

He added: “On behalf of the Irish team, we wish Steven well for his future club career and we thank him for his outstanding commitment.”

Robinho ready for ‘world football classic’

Manchester City star RobinhoBrazilian superstar Robinho believes his country’s quarter-final showdown with the Netherlands will be a great spectacle, while his team remain confident of progressing (Holland 16/5, draw 11/5, Brazil 20/21).

Robinho endured a difficult domestic season in England with Manchester City before being loaned out to Santos in his homeland in January but has enjoyed a successful World Cup, with Brazil breezing into the last eight.

Boss Dunga has been criticised in his homeland for the style of play, with a greater emphasis on defence than has perhaps been seen in previous Brazil sides, but Robinho is sure the quarter-final showdown with the Netherlands will be a mouth-watering contest (Brazil 4/9 to qualify, Holland 13/8).

“It’s a world football classic. It’s going to be like a final,” he explained.

It could be argued that neither Brazil nor the Netherlands have produced an exceptional performance as yet in South Africa. The European giants comfortably made it through their group, beating the likes of Denmark, Japan and Cameroon, but did not produce the kind of ‘total football’ for which the nation is so famous for.

The Oranje saw off a spirited Slovakia side in the last 16 but while Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder may have impressed the likes of Robin van Persie and Rafael van der Vaart have arguably failed to deliver at this stage in the competition.

Brazil have surpassed Spain as favourites for the tournament after easing through a group that included North Korea, Portugal and the Ivory Coast and comfortably seeing off Chile 3-0 in the last 16.  However, while Brazilian teams in the past have been characterised by the flair and guile of players such as Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Romario and Pele, amongst numerous others, the current side relies as heavily on other aspects of their game.

The superb goalkeeping ability of Julio Cesar, the experience of defender and captain Lucio and the workmanlike attitude of holding midfielder Gilberto Silva are as crucial to this crop of Brazilian stars as the skills of players such as Robinho and Benfica playmaker Ramires.

Dunga has brushed aside any criticism of his team by Brazil?s press in the past, and like Robinho he expects their quarter-final showdown to be one for the football purists.

He said: “We know the Netherlands are a very difficult team to play against.

“Their football is actually very similar to South American football. They don’t try to stay defending and rely on long balls.

“They have technical quality and we will need to be ready for that. It’s a solid team.”
