Graham Hunter on how Atletico Madrid are like Chelsea of old, but why Jose Mourinho can take advantage of small margins

Atlético Madrid vs Chelsea, Champions League semi-final (Tuesday, April 22, 19.45)

The neatest way to summarize what Jose Mourinho and Co face in Madrid tonight is that Chelsea are about to endure the most unsettling prospect of facing ‘themselves’.

Atletico are Chelsea of April 2005. Thibaut Courtois is Petr Cech, Diego Costa is Didier Drogba and above all Diego Simeone is Mourinho at his very best.

Little wonder under-pressure Jose wants to repatriate Courtois next season and is well on his way to signing Diego Costa.

Similarities with Chelsea 2005

Back in 2005 the Blues were horribly difficult to defeat and reached this semi-final stage by defeating both Porto and FC Barcelona – just as Atleti have done this season. But the greater similarities are in attitude, system, work ethic, all-for-one-and-one-for-all spirit.

Simeone is a street-tough man who isn’t afraid to admit he relies on his understanding of the Zodiac and horoscopes as part of his man-management techniques

‘Sanitarians need a lot of affection, but if you’re born under Scorpio you respond better to a bit of tough love. My star sign is Taurus – we can be a bit difficult to deal with. We’ll give you our heart and soul but only if you treat us well. If you try to force us to do something against our will, watch out.’

Tease him if you dare

Just like Mourinho used to have the ultimate capacity to achieve, Simeone has brought all his players, reserves too, to the boil at the same time – and kept them simmering all season. It’s one hell of a trick.

Champions League semi finals, Chelsea v Atletico via Graphic News

Simeone’s promise to his president

You could compare him to both Pep Guardiola and Mourinho for his absolute intensity – every minute of every working day. And in his spare time. He’ll often go to the cinema, catch the first 15 minutes but then become utterly overtaken by some new thought on training, or a rival, or the last match and need to walk out so that he can make notes.

Friends and family have tired of asking him whether he enjoyed a television programme, a movie or a concert. Usually he’ll have taken in about five per cent of what they have – because his restless football mind won’t let him alone.

Three trophies ago he took over with Atletico sliding down the table and able to peer over their shoulder at the relegation zone. He told his new president:

‘I’m going to make it unpleasant to play us, teams are going to suffer’.

He did. And they have

To this day his motto is: ‘If your car isn’t quite top notch then you have to find a way to puncture the other guy’s tyres so that you can keep up with him.’

John Terry and Frank Lampard 14/5/2006 00179078

What Terry and Lampard think…

When I spoke to John Terry and Frank Lampard (above in 2006) at Cobham last week and asked them about this tie each man pointed out that the general impression of Chelsea having had an extremely favourable draw in avoiding Real Madrid and Bayern didn’t tally with their views of the Spanish league leaders.

Each of them watches Spanish football and while each is respectful of the team it’s also Diego Simeone’s electric buzz of energy, animation and activity on the touchline which has impressed them.

My words, not theirs, but I think they see a version of Mourinho – just younger and as hungry as the Portuguese was back then.

For those who are trying to size up this match it’s important to point out that often Atletico’s margins are the smallest. Lots of 1-0 and 2-1 wins. An indication of rigour, but also an indication that if Chelsea can ‘do a job’ on them then taking a draw or a one-goal win back to London isn’t utterly impossible.

Diego Costa

  • Betting: Fancy Hunter’s tip of a tight Chelsea result?

More to Atleti than Costa

However, there’s a great deal to say that’s pro-Atletico. In all 23 Liga and Champions League games at the Calderon this season they’ve conceded just 10 times.

Notwithstanding the eye-catching nature of Courtois’ and Costa’s work this is a team – genuinely a terrific blend of youth, experience, pace, positional play, mental toughness. Will to win.

  • For example, although the headline figure is that Costa (above), potentially Spain’s starting World Cup No9, has 35 goals this season it’s important to note than in Atletico’s last 12 games (since their last defeat) there have been nine different scorers – Costa, Villa, Koke, Raúl Garcia, Gabi, Diego, Godín, Arda Turan and Miranda.
  • In those same games there have been nine individual goal-assist producers – Villa, Filipe Luis, Juanfran, Gabi, Raúl Garcia, Diego Arda, Adrian and Miranda.

Try picking a first goalscorer out of that lot. Atletico have Spain’s best set-play record offensively – they practice remorselessly and very often get it right.

That, allied to the fact that Atleti are noticeably good in the air in both attacking and defensive situations would suggest that conceding free kicks in the last third must be ‘verboten’ for Chelsea.

A little note for those who like in-play, should Atleti get a penalty and Costa is on the field he is likely to continue taking them – despite the fact that he’s missed four of eight this season.

Little details like that could well decide the whole tie and progress to Lisbon.

It’s old Chelsea against new Chelsea. May the better Chelsea win.

Jose hints at Herculean task

Jose Mourinho has warned his Real Madrid players they cannot relax when they travel to Estadio Jose Rico Perez on Saturday to take on Hercules (9/1 Herucles, 21/5 draw, 3/10 Real Madrid – 90 minutes).

Spain’s capital club have banged in 16 goals in La Liga either side of the recent international break – going back to the 6-1 drubbing of strugglers Deportivo La Coruna – and head to Alicante determined to stay ahead of the chasing pack at the top of the table (10/11 Real Madrid – La Liga Outright).

However, Mourinho has called for a reality check from Real followers and has warned his players they must not expect a cakewalk against the La Liga newcomers.

He said in his Friday press conference: “We are in good shape. We are playing well and working hard. We are not children. There will be close calls because we cannot always win 6-1.

“We must stay on track and score goals, but this is a difficult championship and every match is different.”

Hercules caused a seismic shock when they beat champions Barcelona 2-0 at the Nou Camp on September 11 and the Portuguese coach know there can be no excuses, adding: “There is a long way to go. We have only played eight games.”

Xabi Alonso, Mesut Ozil, Marcelo and Ricardo Carvalho – who all missed the surprise goalless draw against Real Murcia in the Copa del Rey in midweek – will all return for Saturday’s trip.

Mourinho knows there can be no mistakes against Hercules, who also held Villarreal to a 2-2 draw at home recently, and has demanded his players pick up where they left off in La Liga (5/6 Real Madrid-Real Madrid – Half-time/Full-time).

He added: “I will make some changes against Hercules. It is an important match; even more so than a Champions League game because we cannot lose points. We want to win and remain on top of the table.

“The players I called up are those who are in the best form, and those who start will either be the same or very close to previous line-ups.

“I hope my players help bring home the three points so that we are still first come Sunday.”

Long road ahead, warns Jose

Real Madrid put down a marker in La Liga on Sunday with a 6-1 demolition of Deportivo La Coruna – but the result did nothing to tempt totesport.com into making Spain’s capital club favourites for the title race (Evens Real Madrid – La Liga Primera Outright 2010/2011).

Real finally got the win and performance their supporters had been craving since Jose Mourinho was installed as the new manager in the summer, to serve notice of their Primera Division intentions.

Cristiano Ronaldo, the world’s most expensive footballer, scored twice in a one-sided contest against basement club Depor at a rain-drenched Bernabeu to leave Real in third place behind leaders Valencia and Villarreal (13/8 Valencia – La Liga Primera W/O Barcelona & Real Madrid).

The manner of the win had a whiff of inevitability about it given that Real had found the net just nine times since the start of the season prior to the Depor drubbing.

The Spanish giants had come under fire in the recent home match against Osasuna but the shackles finally came off against Miguel Lotina’s strugglers.

Mourinho refused to get carried away by the goal-fest and insisted his players still had work to do to win their first Spanish crown since 2008.

He said: “We look above and see there are still teams in front of us. We need to continue working.”

The Portuguese coach, who led Internazionale FC to an unprecedented treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League titles last season, said he would thrive on the desire to win over his detractors.

Mourinho endured a stormy relationship with the Italian press during his time in Milan and doubts remain whether his conservative approach will win over seasoned Real fans accustomed to champagne football.

The former Chelsea coach admitted he still had work to do to appease the Bernabeu faithful but shrugged off personal criticism of his brand of football.

He said: “The doubts people have motivate me and make me laugh. I don’t understand why there are doubts about a coach who has won what I’ve won.

“I haven’t won three Champions League and seven championships – I’ve won two Champions Leagues and six championships. Is that sufficient to coach here? If so, I’ll continue working with calmness.”

He added: “I have the confidence of the president and the board. If they let me work here for four years, I promise a great team. We will have games likes this one and like the one against Levante.”

Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw by Mallorca at Camp Nou on Sunday but totesport.com still has the champions as 5/6 favourites to retain their crown.

Jose ready for Real challenge

Jose Mourinho has signed a four-year contract to become the new manager of Real Madrid – and described his challenge of returning the club to the top in Spain and in Europe as “a big one” (check out ante-post football markets on totesport.com).

The 47-year-old was on Monday unveiled as the successor to Manuel Pellegrini and becomes the 11th coach in the past seven years of Spain’s big-spending capital club.

Mourinho terminated his contract with Internazionale last week after two seasons at the club and Real have paid Inter a reported eight million euros (£6.8m) in compensation.

“I like to give myself a challenge and this is a big one,” said Mourinho. “I have a lot of confidence in myself and my ability as a coach.”

Sporting director Jorge Valdano said: “It’s an honour to have one of the most prestigious coaches in the world.”

The Portuguese coach arrives in Madrid off the backing of guiding Inter to a historic treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League titles.

The former Porto and Chelsea boss is charged with the task of arresting a three-year trophyless title run in La Liga.
Real have also failed to make it past the first knockout phase of Europe’s elite club competition in six seasons.

Valdano added: “We are delighted to have him here with us. The best thing for our club right now is to have Mourinho with us.”

Real suffered another season of disappointment on the home front when they lost out to great rivals Barcelona in the race for the Spanish title.

However, Mourinho said he would not be rushing into making changes to personnel until he had time to settle in.
He said: “It’s too early to speak about changes.

“I believe it’s time to analyse the situation, to get to know my club, ask lots of questions and get answers.”

He added: “If we work as a group, it’s not difficult to get results.

“I want this group to have an identity, to win everything.

“The strength of my team is always the team and not the individuals.”

Jose ready to get Real

Club president Florentino Perez is convinced Jose Mourinho is the right man to take Real Madrid back to the summit of Spanish and European football (check out ante-post football betting opportunities on totesport.com).

Spain’s big-spending capital club opened the door to appointing the much-decorated Portuguese coach when they announced they had sacked Manuel Pellegrini on Wednesday.

Now all that remains is for two-time Champions League winner Mourinho to resolve his contract negotiations with Internazionale before he sets about arguably the biggest task of his distinguished managerial career.

The 47-year-old is under contract in Milan until June 2012 but that is unlikely to prevent him from becoming Madrid’s 11th manager in seven years.

“The change of coach is always difficult, but we are convinced that after this first year and this first phase, now is the moment to give a fresh impulse to our project,” said Perez.

“I am absolutely convinced that the incorporation of Mourinho, who is one of the best coaches in the world – if not the best – is an opportunity that, in this Madrid, which fights permanently for excellence, we couldn’t let pass us by.”

Real have again had to play second-fiddle to great rivals and champions Barcelona this season and were knocked out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the sixth season running – despite a 250million-euro spending spree on new players this time last year.

They have now won just two major trophies in the last seven years and not even the likes of marquee signings Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka, Karim Benzema and Xabi Alonso could inspire them to silverware last season

Perez acknowledged Real have lost valuable ground in the race for major honours and hopes Mourinho will restore some order.

He added: “This club demands the maximum and is always in search of excellence.

“We have reflected a lot on this season. It’s not just not winning a title. We consider that we are in a suitable moment to bet on one of the best coaches in the world, and the opportunity to bring him to the club is there.”

On paper, there appears no other candidate with the profile and magnetism of Mourinho to transform Real’s fortunes.

This season he guided Serie A giants to an unprecedented treble of Serie A, Coppa Italia and Champions League titles.

The former Porto and Chelsea boss has made no secret of his desire to take over at the Bernabeu and all the evidence suggests his dream is about to be realised.

He met with Inter’s finance director Rinaldo Ghelfi in Milan earlier on Wednesday and afterwards told reporters: “Now I am on holiday, then I will go and work in Spain.”

Inter’s José Mourinho to Real Madrid

post thumbnail

José Mourinho manager Real MadridAlthough it has not been made official yet, it is no secret that José Mourinho will be managing Real Madrid next season in what can only be bad news for Barcelona as Mourinho has developed a taste for victory over the Catalan side.

‘The Special One’ has already issued a harsh warning to los Galacticos by saying that there are no stars in his team and adding that he envisions a deal to be completed after meeting officials in Madrid.

Mourinho told a Portuguese television station that Jorge Mendes, his agent, has met with Madrid representatives and as a result a deal is almost certain but added that he wants to meet with the representatives from Madrid first so as to get a full understanding of the role.

You can bet on this: Football Today

It is rumoured that Mourinho will join Madrid on a four year deal worth €10 million per season.

“I want to meet people, know exactly what they want from me and the conditions, not the structures, because these I already know, to avoid any doubts when I begin my work. I think all will be consummated.”

“The stars now are Inter, they are the European champions. My message to the players of Real Madrid, if I train them, is that they are not stars, the star is not the coach, the star is the team. If they all accept this like when I was at Porto, Chelsea or Inter, the victories will come.”

Mourinho, who led Inter to glory in the Champions League on Saturday night, said that there are a number of reasons for taking over the role.

“It will be a huge challenge to contest the League against Barcelona. They are a great team and have proved it by almost reaching 100 points. Trying to win the Champions League is an incentive as they have not won it in eight years,” he added.

You can bet on this: Football Today

“It’s an incentive because everyone says it’s a lost cause because my profile doesn’t fit Real Madrid or the club does not have the profile that I think a club must have.”

One thing is for sure though, Madrid will hand Mourinho a massive cheque book and Mourinho will spend it. Expect next season’s La Liga title race to be another fascinating battle between two of Europe’s elite clubs.

Jose Mourinho to Quit? “My only options are Madrid or Inter”

post thumbnail

jose mourinho 210x300 Jose Mourinho to Quit? My only options are Madrid or Inter Jose Mourinho has admitted that the only two options for him this summer are to stay at Inter or make the switch to Real Madrid.

Mourinho has not officially been contacted by Madrid but the Portuguese has fuelled speculation after telling the Italian press, “I want to coach Real 100 per cent. If it is next year or later, I can’t say.

“All I say is that if you are a coach or a great player, to not play in a club like Madrid leaves a hole in your career.”

Mourinho has established himself as one of the world’s most prestigious managers, winning titles in Portugal, England and Italy – so far.

The former Chelsea boss is always looking for a new challenge and that, combined with his fiery relationship with the Italian media, could lead to an exit from the Milan side.

Mourinho has publically commented on the fact that he and his family don’t feel at home in Italy and has blasted the Italian FA for making him what he describes as a hate figure.

A move to the Spanish capital would certainly provide Mourinho with a fresh start and what would surely be his biggest managerial challenge to date.

Current Real coach Manuel Pellegrini and his side amassed 96 points in the league this season and were only beaten to the title by a rampant Barcelona side on the final day.

So, if Mourinho does make the switch, he can expect enormous pressure to win both La Liga and the Champions League in his first season – most Real Madrid managers don’t get two.

Jose coy on Inter future

Jose MourinhoJose Mourinho is remaining tight-lipped over his Inter Milan future after again admitting he wants to return to manage in England at some point (Inter 8/15 to win Champions League).

The former Chelsea coach has a fractious relationship with the Italian media and that has led to plenty of speculation over his future, with suggestions he will quit at the end of the season.

He has always maintained he wants to return to England at some point and has been linked with taking over at Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City in the past, but now the Portuguese admits he could stay on at the San Siro.

“This is a team that in any case, whoever guides it, will do well,” he said.

“Are there any possibilities that I remain? Yes.”

Mourinho, who has guided Inter to the Italian Cup and could yet complete an amazing treble this season with the Champions League and Serie A title (Inter 1/14 to win Serie A) within his grasp, has made no secret of the fact he is keen to return to the Premier League where he enjoyed such success at Chelsea between 2004 and 2007.

He had been tipped to return this summer but he has now hinted that it could be delayed.

“I lived there (in England) three years and I know I will return for sure – when? Nobody knows,” he added.

“Will it be next season? I don’t think so, but for sure I will be back in England.”

Mourinho’s side are on the verge of the Italian title as they lead second-placed Roma by two points with just two games to go, while they take on Bayern Munich in the Champions League final on May 22 and it appears the 47-year-old would prefer domestic glory to more European success.

“With regards to the scudetto, we will do our duty until the end,” he said.

“As I have said many times for us the Champions League should be a dream, not an obsession.”

Jose ready to go the distance

Jose Mourinho will tell his Internazionale players they must be prepared to go until the final whistle when they take on holders Barcelona in a mouth-watering Champions League semi-final second-leg clash at the Nou Camp on Wednesday (4/6 Inter Milan – To Qualify).

The Serie A title-chasers travel to Spain (4/9 Barcelona 11/4 draw 11/2 Inter Milan – match betting) with a 3-1 advantage secured in Milan on Tuesday.

Pedro threatened to make it a comfortable night for the Spanish champions when he gave them the lead on 19 minutes.

But goals from Wesley Sneijder, Maicon and Diego Milito inflicted only a fourth defeat of the season on a side bidding to make Champions League history by retaining the trophy.

Inter are now in the box seat to win a first major European trophy since they completed a double in 1965.

However, Mourinho, who served as an assistant to the late Sir Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal at Barcelona from 1996 to 2000, has warned there is a long way to go.

The Portuguese coach said: “We still have a lot to do, we’re going to play in Barcelona next week don’t forget. Barcelona are the best team in the world when they play at home.”

Victory for the Nerazzurri at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza was Inter’s fifth in succession since the knockout stages and Mourinho is convinced his players have arrived on the big stage.

However, the 47-year-old also stressed they would not be getting ahead of themselves taking into account three-time winners Barca defeated Inter 2-0 in the group stages earlier this season.

Mourinho, winner of Europe’s elite club competition in 2004 with his former club FC Porto, added: “We must fight hard to make this dream come true. We have two choices for the game in Barcelona: get to the final in Madrid or leave Europe with our heads held high. Our chance of going through is 50%, just like before the first leg.”
