Graham Hunter exclusive: Barca believe they can beat AC Milan

Champions League: Barcelona v AC Milan

The cynics, perhaps let’s dub them the realists, will argue it’s all case of ‘too little too late’  for FC Barcelona with regard to putting AC Milan out of the Champions League.

For precisely the last two months there has been a drop in the intensity of Barça’s play, not just defensively with only a couple of clean sheets in that time, but the way in which they can put the pedal to the floor and tear even the best teams apart.

Last week, without a match, interim coach Jordi Roura mixed a little bit of time off with a double stint on Wednesday and pretty high-intensity work during the other training sessions.

This is the moment of the season when, since the beginning of the Guardiola era, the Blaugrana’s form begins to peak for the second time. There is a high priority put on having the turbo-chargers available in November and December, then again in March and April.

However this season the dip in late January, and particularly February, has seemed more pronounced and perhaps the surge will come too late for this tie – particularly taking into account the current scoreline.

Yet the players believe.

MBSBarcelonavMilan

Around the training ground over the last five or six days there has been no slumped shoulders, plenty of positive words and two meetings when the coach, but particularly the senior players, confronted problems, solutions, tactics and general ideas of how to eliminate Milan.

But can Barça really shift from a low gear to the type of Formula 1 performance which can make Milan “fearful” as their legendary coach Arrigo Sacchi says must be the case if the home side is to have any chance?

At this stage over the last four seasons Barça have beaten Bayer Leverkusen 7-1, Arsenal 3-1, Stuttgart 4-0 and Lyon 5-2. If that level of performance is about to arrive then, added to the fact that they have distinctly the better XI, then the Catalans will progress. Anything less and the weight of history, no side with a two-goal deficit and no away goal has gone through, will bear down on them too heavily.

If Andres Iniesta scores any time in this match, Paddy Power will refund all losing First Goalscorer, Last Goalscorer, Correct Score & Scorecast singles on the match.

Milan to get back on track

After losing their place at the top of the Serie A table following their surprise home defeat to Fiorentina on Saturday, AC Milan (6/5 Serie A outright) have the perfect chance to get back on track when they travel to Verona to face Chievo on Tuesday evening.

The Rossoneri have led the league for most of the season, but injuries and suspensions appear to be taking their toll and Domenico Di Carlo’s men will fancy their chances of causing an upset at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi (Chievo 5/1, draw 13/5, AC Milan 8/13 – 90 minutes).

Chievo have once again upset the odds this year and are currently on a run of four games without defeat. Despite their limited resources, Di Carlo’s men have impressed this term and are still in with an outside chance of qualifying for Europe.

Much of their success is based on a strong work ethic built around the midfield diamond of Luciano, Michael Bradley, Luca Rigoni and Frenchman Cyril Thereau.

However, they do have a few star players and for over a decade, striker Sergio Pellissier has been their talisman. The captain has once again led his charges in superb fashion this season but has only returned a disappointing tally of six goals this season. He has scored in his last two matches though and will be looking to continue his run of form on Tuesday (Chievo 8/1 to win 1-0 – correct score).

Milan look like they’re starting to struggle and they haven’t won in any of their last four games in all competitions. This has seen boss Massimiliano Allegri’s position come under severe scrutiny but his cause has not been helped by injuries and suspensions to a number of key players.

Going into the match, the San Siro side will be without the likes of Mark Van Bommel, Thiago Silva and Alexandre Pato due to injuries while Alberto Aquilani, Daniele Bonera and skipper Massimo Ambrosini are also ruled out through suspension.

However, they can still call on the likes of Robinho and the temperamental Zlatan Ibrahimovic to aid their cause, but it is likely to be one of their more unsung heroes who could make the difference.

Chievo are renowned for their battling performances and Milan will have to match them in this area of the game if they’re to have any chance of winning and in Antonio Nocerino they have possibly the country’s best. The 27-year-old signed from Palermo in the summer and has taken over Gennaro Gattuso’s role in the side as their ball winner. His display could be vital to the outcome of the match.

Both sides will be confident going into the game, however, Milan, despite their injuries and suspensions should just have enough quality to beat the Gialloblu but it will certainly be a tight game (Milan 5/1 to in 1-0 – correct score).

Messi to break Milan hearts

After a stalemate at the San Siro, Barcelona – and their star playmaker, Lionel Messi – will be out book their place in the Champions League semi-finals with a win over AC Milan (Barcelona 2/7, draw 9/2, AC Milan 10/1 – 90 minutes).

The second-leg at the Nou Camp will give the Catalan giants the chance to make up for what was a below-par performance in Italy last month.

Much has been made about the state of the pitch at the San Siro in the first encounter between these two sides, with Barca unhappy with what they believe were tactics to stop them playing their passing game.

On the pristine surface at the Nou Camp, which is akin to greens we will see at Augusta for the Masters this week, Barcelona (6/5 Champions League outright) will have no problems playing their own free-flowing football that will make Milan work hard for a sniff of the ball.

The likes of Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta were kept off the scoresheet during the first leg, as Milan produced a dogged performance to stop the La Liga outfit getting that crucial away goal.

With the fact that goals could count as double for Milan (22/1 Champions League outright) when they make the trip to Spain, will be a worrying factor for Barca mastermind Pep Guardiola.

And there were chances for AC strikers Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Robinho in the first-leg, so the home side will have to be extra vigilant in defence if they don’t want to get stung by their Serie A opposition this week.

The last time Milan played away from home in the Champions League they were played off the park by Arsenal at the Emirates.

In that 3-0 defeat to the Gunners, Milan boss Massimiliano Allegri saw his side go from an accomplished European outfit to a rabble, who allowed Arsenal to dominate proceeding in north London and the Premier League side were unlucky not to go through.

Milan will have learned lessons from that but it?s hard to look past Barcelona reaching the semi-finals, especially on a decent pitch at the Nou Camp.

In Tuesday’s other quarter-final encounter, Bayern Munich have the task of seeing off the job against Marseille at the Allianz Arena (Bayern 2/7, draw 9/2, Milan 10/190 minutes).

The Bundesliga giants made light work of beating  their Ligue 1 opponents in the first leg in the south of France and are deservedly firm favourites to go through to the next round, to most likely face Real Madrid.

With Mario Gomez, Frank Ribery and Arjen Robben, who is coming back into form, Bayern (9/2 Champions League outright) should have no problem in seeing out their 2-0 advantage from the first-leg.

Marseille manager Didier Deschamps would surely be out of a job were it not for his side’s Champions League journey, considering their miserable form in recent weeks.

Bayern supporters should have no fears of not only going through to the final four of the competition on Tuesday but also winning the game on the night in Bavaria.

Barca ready for Milan test

Barcelona as usual are hitting form at the right point of the season but will face a test when they take on unpredictable AC Milan at the San Siro on Wednesday in the Champions League (AC Milan 4/1, draw 11/4, Barcelona 8/11 – Match Prices).

There has not been a more Jeckyll and Hyde pair of performances than the ones witnessed in Milan’s last-16 double-header with Premier League outfit Arsenal in the last round.

The Italians dominated the first leg at the San Siro as they completely out-gunned the Gunners with an accomplished display in front of their fanatical support. However, the Serie A outfit crumbled at the Emirates and were lucky to scrape through to the quarter-finals of the competition.

Manager Massimiliano Allegri will be determined for his side to put on a similar home performance to their demolition of Arsenal when they host the European champions this week.

Zlatan Ibrahimovich (7/1 – First Goalscorer), Robinho and Kevin Prince Boateng were on fire that night and they will certainly be a trio who can cause problems for the sometimes shaky Barca backline.

Likewise Milan have leaked goals at the back this season and with the loss of Thiago Silva to injury, Allegri is going to have to shuffle his pack for Wednesday night.

Barcelona could be smelling blood already and the pace they have throughout their side is going to keep the likes of Alessandro Nesta and Daniele Bonera awake at night.

The Catalan club’s goal-machine Lionel Messi (11/4 – First Goalscorer) is the top scorer in the Champions League this season with seven to his name so far. So do not be surprised if the Argentine magician dances his way through the Milan defence to add to his tally in the competition.

Even when the playmaker does not have the ball he draws the attention of defenders which creates space for those around him, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Pedro set to be a threat at the San Siro.

The game will depend on which Milan turns up on the night; if they can repeat their efforts from their first clash with Arsenal they may well be able to hold the La Liga giants.

However, Barcelona have so many attacking options and keep the ball so well that they should be able to bag a couple of vital away goals and take a lead back to the Nou Camp.

In Wednesday’s other Champions quarter-final Marseille host Bayern Munich in a massive game for the Ligue 1 side (Marseille 7/2, draw 5/2, Bayern Munich 5/6 – Match Betting).

The encounter at the Stade Velodrome will see the return of Bayern star Franck Ribery (7/4 Anytime Goalscorer) to his former club in the first competitive meeting between the two teams.

It looks likely that Marseille won’t be happy to see the return of the French international, as he is part of strong Bayern side who are more than capable of getting a comfortable win in the south of France.

Les Phoceens have lost nine of their last 19 games in this competition at the Stade Velodrome and you should be able to add another defeat to that tally come the final whistle on Wednesday night.

Milan double on the cards

The FA Cup takes centre stage in England this weekend meaning there is no Premier League action, but in La Liga and Serie A there are plenty of intriguing top-flight ties to look forward to.

Serie A

Catania boss Vincenzo Montella has called on his side to become more ruthless in front of goal after their slide down the Serie A table of late.

Parma visit the Sicilian side on Sunday in what could well be a tight contest. Parma started the season strongly, but have slipped down the league themselves after their bright opening to the campaign, but they are still a hard team to beat.

Montella may be eager for his side to get back to winning ways, but a draw could be on the cards in this particular fixture, which can be backed at 11/5.

Inter Milan endured an abysmal start to the campaign but the Nerazzurri are in a rich vein of form and have won their previous seven league games to close the gap on current pacesetters Juventus and AC Milan.

Inter travel to Lecce and can be backed at 8/13 to take all three points, and it is hard to see Lecce getting anything out of this fixture despite the fact they enjoy home advantage.

AC Milan are just a point behind Juventus, who host third placed Udinese this weekend and the San Siro side host Cagliari on Sunday.

The Rossoneri are the heavy 1/3 favourites to take all three points and they should have no problem in seeing off the Cagliari, who sit comfortably in mid-table despite a dip in form in the last few weeks.

An AC Milan-Inter Milan double pays out at just above evens and it is certainly worth considering backing the two Milan sides to secure victories this weekend.

La Liga

Malaga have been on a shocking run of late after a decent start to the season, with three losses and two draws in their last five La Liga fixtures.

Sevilla travel to La Rosaleda on Sunday in what promises to be an interesting affair and Sevilla are 9/4 to secure the win.

Sevilla have also endured a difficult run of form but they have picked up with two draws after three losses on the spin and could well take all three points at Malaga on Sunday.

Valencia lie third in the league but their form of late has been questionable and their midweek Copa del Rey exploits may have taken their toll ahead of the trip to Racing Santander.

Granted, Santander sit just above the relegation places and it will be a huge test for the strugglers but they have impressed in recent matches.

Valencia are the 11/10 favourites, while Racing can be backed at 12/5. The draw, which is priced at 9/4, could well be the best bet in this particular fixture.

Espanyol are a formidable side on home soil and the Barcelona-based club host Real Mallorca on Saturday. Espanyol are unbeaten in five, including a hard fought draw with city rivals Barcelona and look good value at 5/6 to take all three points.

Milan out to secure title

The leagues throughout Europe are reaching their climax and AC Milan have the chance to sew up their first Serie A title since 2004 when they travel to Roma on Saturday night.

The Rossoneri lie eight points clear with just three games to go and it appears to be simply a matter of when and not if the Milan giants secure their 18th league title.

Massimiliano Allegri’s men need just a point to secure the title and should be able to get it at the first opportunity, given their excellent run of form and strong defensive performances of late.

Milan have not triumphed at the Stadio Olimpico since 2005 but at 9/5 in the match betting, an away win cannot be ruled as the 1-0 win over Bologna last weekend was the club’s fifth consecutive win – their best run of form for 18 months.

Allegri is also able to welcome back a clutch of stars for the Rome trip, including Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Mark van Bommel from suspension, Alexandre Pato from a thigh strain and Gennaro Gattuso from a muscle problem.

The champions-elect have also been solid at the back and kept four clean sheets in the last five games, while they have only been beaten twice on the road this term.

Roma have turned the corner with three wins in the last four games to keep alive their hopes of Champions League qualification, and they are the 7/5 favourites in the match betting to make home advantage count.

Francesco Totti is always worth considering in the goalscoring markets and is 11/2 to score First/Last and 13/8 Anytime, and is obviously in fine form having notched nine of his club’s last 12 goals to take his tally for the season to 14.

However, one might argue that there is an over-reliance from the Giallorossi on their talisman and if Milan can shackle the World Cup winner then it becomes difficult to see where Roma will profit.

Vincenzo Montella’s men managed to take the three points in the reverse fixture at the San Siro but the onus is on them to do the attacking this time as a draw for Milan will secure the the title.

Milan’s defence though should be up to the task, given the fact that Roma will also be without Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta so the 9/4 available on the draw seems the sensible option.

Udinese take on Lazio on Sunday in a key game in terms of Champions League qualification and neither side will go in to the fixture in the best of nick.

The Zebrete are in their worse run of form since the start of the season and have slipped to sixth in the table, with their defence leaking 12 goals in the last five games.

By contrast, Lazio have managed to score 10 in the same period but have won only two and lost three of those games.

Both teams have selection problems ahead of the match but at 11/5 in the match betting, it is worth taking the capital outfit to cement their place in the top four.

In-form Milan to earn their Spurs

The Champions League returns this week with two games on Tuesday night and Tottenham face another trip to the San Siro, this time to take on seven-time winners of the competition AC Milan (both 22/1 in the outright betting) in the first leg of their last-16 clash, while Valencia also host Schalke at the Mestalla.

AC Milan v Spurs

These two sides enjoyed contrasting fortunes in the group stages with Spurs defying all the doubters to win Group A which included defending champions Inter, losing just one game and ending the phase as the tournament’s joint-leading scorers with 18.

Milan, though, made it through as a runner-up to Real Madrid with the fewest number of points as a qualifier, just eight, while they were the joint-lowest scorers of those teams that made it after mustering just seven goals.

The Italian powerhouse have struggled against English opposition since last lifting the trophy in 2007, having been beaten at this stage by Arsenal in 2008 and Manchester United by an aggregate 7-2 last year, while they were also held to a draw by Portsmouth in the UEFA Cup group stages in 2008/09.

However, it is hard to see that run continuing this week and Milan look good value at 8/11 in the match betting to at least establish a first-leg lead with a win.

Milan have found their form since the turn of the year and are unbeaten in 2011, preparing for this clash with a 4-0 demolition of Parma at the San Siro last Saturday to maintain a three-point lead at the top of Serie A as the Rossoneri look for their first domestic league title since 2004.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (4/1 to score the first goal) has found a new lease of life at Milan, leading the goal-scoring charts with 18 for the season, and will head a quality attacking triumvirate alongside the Brazilian duo of Alexandre Pato and Robinho.

There are one or two injury worries for coach Massimiliano Allegri as Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini are ruled out, while January arrivals Antonio Cassano, Mark van Bommel and Urby Emanuelson are cup-tied.

However, Spurs have greater problems over selection despite the return of Rafael van der Vaart and will struggle to contain the Rossoneri on Tuesday.

Gareth Bale’s impressive performances against Inter in the group stages catapulted him into the transfer limelight but he has been ruled out of the first leg as he has not recovered from a back problem.

Although the Wales ace scored a hat-trick on Spurs’ last trip to the San Siro, it should be worth noting that the visitors were played off the park in the first half, trailing 4-0 at the break, and ultimately lost the match, albeit 4-3.

Playmaker Luka Modric is also a major doubt following appendicitis, Peter Crouch is struggling with a back injury and Jermaine Jenas is suspended – while Tom Huddlestone, Ledley King and Younes Kabboul are long-term absentees.

Spurs go into the game on the back of a three-match Premier League winning streak but have been eking out results rather than dominating – and look set to struggle against an in-form Milan outfit.

Valencia v Schalke 04

Valencia do not boast a great record against German opposition but are the form side going into this encounter and look worthy 7/10 favourites in the match betting on Tuesday, with Schalke on offer at 18/5 and the draw at 13/5.

Los Che have failed to win any of their last six home games against German sides, drawing five and losing one, with Schalke holding the hosts to a goalless affair in 2007/08 in the Champions League group stages.

However, Unai Emery’s men have gone on a six match-winning streak since a 4-2 reverse against Villarreal in the Copa del Rey and have now climbed to third in the table.

Schalke’s form domestically has been erratic, although they have been creeping up the table after an awful start to the campaign.

Felix Magath’s men were able to put their Bundesliga troubles behind them in the group stages, topping Group B after winning four matches and losing just one.

Valencia’s recent form has been too good to ignore though, and after warming up with a 2-1 at Atletico Madrid, they are expected to edge a low-scoring affair (Under 2.5 goals at 8/13).

Robinho reveals Milan delight

Brazilian playmaker Robinho finally managed to put an end to his spell with Manchester City yesterday by completing a move to Italian giants AC Milan – where he hopes to get his hands on some silverware (AC Milan 2/1 to win the Serie A).

The Rossoneri have been overshadowed in recent years by city rivals Inter Milan, with the Nerazzurri securing the Serie A title for the last five consecutive seasons – although their success in 2006 was due to the Calciopoli Scandal, with Juventus stripped of the title – as well as picking up the Champions League and Coppa Italia titles in the last campaign (Inter 14/1 to retain their Champions League title).

In contrast AC Milan have endured somewhat of a trophy drought by their own standards of late, the San Siro side last won the Champions League in 2007, their last Scudetto triumph came in 2004 and the Coppa Italia has eluded them since 2003.

However, Robinho has promised to help the side get back to winning ways and is confident he can secure some silverware during his stay in Milan.

“I hope with the rest of my team-mates to be able to contribute to hand many titles to this club,” he told the club’s official website.

“Milan has great players and it’s a fantastic side with a very important history.

“Kaka has always spoken to me very well about Milan and now I know that the Brazilian players in the team will give me a great hand in adapting to the team.

“I will work very hard to make the fans very happy. I want to bring so much joy to them.”

AC Milan have already made a fine start to their Serie A campaign and have seen their odds shorten after the opening weekend fixtures in Italy.

Inter Milan remain the 6/5 favourites with Totesport but AC Milan are now priced at 2/1 following their opening day 4-0 mauling of Lecce, with Robinho’s compatriots Alexandre Pato (2) and Thiago Silva netting in the victory (Pato 33/1 to be the top goalscorer in the Champions League).

Reigning champions Inter, now under the guidance of former Liverpool and Valencia boss Rafael Benitez, could only manage a goalless draw at Bologna in their first fixture.

Juventus and Roma are seen as the other contenders who could challenge for the Serie A title this season but neither managed to pick up three points in their respective openers.

Roma also drew a blank as they could only manage to pick up a point in their home tie newly promoted AC Cesena, while Juve suffered a 1-0 defeat away at Bari.

The Milan faithful have every reason to be confident this season.

Jose Mourinho is no longer at the helm of their fierce rivals and Inter were left largely frustrated in the transfer market as Javier Mascherano chose to join Barcelona instead of linking up with former boss Benitez for a second spell.

With the £22million arrival of Robinho they have a benchmark signing of their own to welcome to the San Siro and new boss Massimiliano Allegri, although not particularly well known outside of his homeland, is a respected coach in Italy after his exploits with Cagliari, where he implemented an exciting brand of attacking football despite the financial limitations of the Italian minnows.

Inter Milan Win Champions League

post thumbnail

Bayern Munich vs Inter Milan Champions League final 2010 300x215 Inter Milan Win Champions LeagueInter Milan are the new champions of Europe after they finished victorious against Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. Diego Milito was the hero scoring twice either side of half time.

The Nerazzurri started on offensive, but the danger of FCB was clear when Arjen Robben instigated a counter-attack in the third minute and was swiftly brought down by Walter Samuel.

Bayern looked more comfortable in possession than Inter. Robben continued to pose a threat every time he got the ball but Inter were looking threatening on the counter attack.

With 35 minutes gone, the deadlock was finally broken, Julio Cesar’s long ball was flicked to Sneijder by Milito. Sneijder played it back to the Milito who then raced into the penalty area and held off two players before clipping the ball over Butt into the net to produce a stunning finish.

Bayern continued to search for an equaliser producing some great openings but continually failing to find a way past the excellent Julio Cesar.

Van Buyten could do little in the 70th minute as Inter doubled the lead. Eto’o spotted Milito 30 yards from goal, and the Argentine dashed past the defender before curling his shot past Butt and into the far corner.

As the game entered injury time, Diego Milito was replaced and received a standing ovation from the Inter fans. The match winner expressed his delight after his brace earned his side the biggest trophy in club football.

“It’s a great joy for me. I have never experienced this and I am really happy for Inter,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“The president [Massimo Moratti] deserves this and I am really happy for everyone tonight.

“This is football and I am really happy. I have always fought hard for this and I have always given the maximum.

“We deserve this trophy, the team, the club, the president and everyone. I am very happy. I want to thank Inter, and the president.”?

But, it wasn’t all smiles though as Milito revealed he could be leaving.

“Will I stay? I don’t know. I have important offers,” he concluded.

One person who will now be definitely leaving Inter Milan is boss Jose Mourinho who has concluded that his work at Inter is now done and will become the next manager of Real Madrid.
