Graham Hunter exclusive: Barca believe they can beat AC Milan

Champions League: Barcelona v AC Milan

The cynics, perhaps let’s dub them the realists, will argue it’s all case of ‘too little too late’  for FC Barcelona with regard to putting AC Milan out of the Champions League.

For precisely the last two months there has been a drop in the intensity of Barça’s play, not just defensively with only a couple of clean sheets in that time, but the way in which they can put the pedal to the floor and tear even the best teams apart.

Last week, without a match, interim coach Jordi Roura mixed a little bit of time off with a double stint on Wednesday and pretty high-intensity work during the other training sessions.

This is the moment of the season when, since the beginning of the Guardiola era, the Blaugrana’s form begins to peak for the second time. There is a high priority put on having the turbo-chargers available in November and December, then again in March and April.

However this season the dip in late January, and particularly February, has seemed more pronounced and perhaps the surge will come too late for this tie – particularly taking into account the current scoreline.

Yet the players believe.

Around the training ground over the last five or six days there has been no slumped shoulders, plenty of positive words and two meetings when the coach, but particularly the senior players, confronted problems, solutions, tactics and general ideas of how to eliminate Milan.

But can Barça really shift from a low gear to the type of Formula 1 performance which can make Milan “fearful” as their legendary coach Arrigo Sacchi says must be the case if the home side is to have any chance?

At this stage over the last four seasons Barça have beaten Bayer Leverkusen 7-1, Arsenal 3-1, Stuttgart 4-0 and Lyon 5-2. If that level of performance is about to arrive then, added to the fact that they have distinctly the better XI, then the Catalans will progress. Anything less and the weight of history, no side with a two-goal deficit and no away goal has gone through, will bear down on them too heavily.

If Andres Iniesta scores any time in this match, Paddy Power will refund all losing First Goalscorer, Last Goalscorer, Correct Score & Scorecast singles on the match.

Germany believe time has come

The sleepy eyes did not hide the determination behind the stare when Mesut Ozil suggested Euro 2012 would be a failure were Germany to return empty-handed (Germany 13/8 joint favourites – Euro 2012 outright).

Die Mannschaft must first plot a way to beat semi-final opponents Italy for the first time in eight attempts at a major tournament if they are to be crowned European champions for a fourth time (Germany 2/5 – To Qualify).

Key to their chances will be Real Madrid playmaker Ozil, who has rightly been lauded for a number of eye-catching performances and is a generous 9/1 in the First and Last Goalscorer markets.

Victory at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev on Sunday will also be the culmination of a master-plan which was underpinned by the promotion of youth.

Not content with being the only nation with a 100 per cent record left in the tournament, Ozil said Germany would not be satisfied unless they realised their dream.

“We knew before the tournament that we had a strong team,” said the 23-year-old. “We believe in ourselves and the goal is to return to Germany with the title. That’s why we are here and I’m convinced we can do it.”

“No one can stop us now” is the view of newspaper Bild, while Germany captain Philipp Lahm reiterated the side’s mission statement.

He said: “So far we have rewarded ourselves for our hard work in the last few years and weeks. But we have always maintained that we want to play the final on Sunday. We want to win it and want to stay here until the very end.”

Germany no longer enjoy the space they were afforded at the 2010 World Cup, nor are they untouchable (Italy 7/4 – To Qualify).

A 5-3 defeat by Switzerland before the Poland and Ukraine showpiece highlighted flaws in defence, still evident given that Germany have conceded in their three games since keeping a clean sheet against Portugal in their Group B opener.

But with experience comes maturity and this is a Germany side packed with pace and power, complemented by the excellent midfield general Sami Khedira.

The Real Madrid enforcer provides the platform in a tried and trusted 4-2-3-1 formation for the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ozil, et al to unlock a door.

“He has become a real leader; he is very good, very dynamic, very present,” said coach Joachim Loew. “It is good for the others that he’s there.”

Loew, who rested heavyweights Mario Gomez, Lukas Podolski and Thomas Muller against Greece, has said Germany do not intend to sit back against the Azzurri and will look to dictate.

No doubt with Ozil at the forefront.

Dynamo believe in keeper’s Maxim

Teenage goalkeeper Maxim Koval believes Dynamo Kiev (10/3 in Match Betting) can defeat Ajax in tonight’s Champions League play-off because they ‘want it more’.

The Ukrainian champions overcame the twin blow of Denys Garmash’s4/5, Draw 13/5 56th-minute dismissal in the first leg and Ajax () taking the lead in the tie a minute later when Oleh Gusev smashed home a late equaliser to level the scores ahead of tonight’s return leg in Amsterdam.

And Koval, 17, who made an impressive debut in the first leg, believes Martin Jol’s side will hold no fear for Dynamo – or be able to surprise them.

“It’s a pity we conceded an away goal, but we shouldn’t worry too much about that,” he said. “I have no doubt that we can win the return game.

“Our opponents cannot surprise us: they are a team we really can beat. Why? Because, I think we simply want it more.”

Ajax are without injured Kenneth Vermeer, Rasmus Lindgren and Nicolás Lodeiro tonight while Vurnon Anita is suspended.

But they showed signs of getting back to their form of last season by winning 3-0 at home to Roda JC at the weekend.

Jol unveiled his new strike partnership of last season’s 49-goal top scorer Luis Suarez (7/2 First Goalscorer) and new signing Mounir El Hamdaoui (9/2).

The Uruguayan set up two goals for El Hamdaoui, who arrived this summer from AZ Alkmaar, and the Moroccan returned the favour with an assist for Suarez’s goal.

Dynamo were disappointing in a 0-0 draw with Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk at the weekend and coach Valeri Gazzaev admits he has a selection headache tonight with several key players either injured or out of form.

Garmash’s suspension and an injury to Argentinian Facundo Bertoglio has left the visitors short of creativity behind veteran striker Andriy Schevchenko (15/2 First Goalscorer).

“Bertoglio has a muscle problem, [Artem] Milevskiyn (10/1) is out of form, Gilherme (8/1) and Andre (7/1) are not in top condition,” said Gazzaev.

However, fit-again Serbian playmaker Milos Ninkovic; and central defender Yevhen Khacheridi are available to the coach.
